The aim of this paper was to investigate the clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of synovial chondromatosis (SC) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Fourteen patients with SC of the TMJ were included in the study. Clinical and MRI features were analysed and divided into three types based on MRI classification: type I with loose bodies, type II with homogeneous masses, and type III with a mixture of loose bodies and homogeneous masses. All SCs occurred in the superior compartment of the TMJ. There were two patients (14%) categorised as type I, five (36%) as type II and seve

Here, we report a case of synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) with numerous loose bodies. A 56-year-old woman was examined in the oral surgery department for trismus and pain in the left TMJ when opening the mouth. Imaging indicated TMJ synovial chondromatosis, and the patient was referred to our department for further examination. Her facial features were symmetrical, and no occlusal abnormalities were found. The maximum mouth opening was 30 mm, and movement of the left mandibular condyle was restricted and accompanied by pain and joint sounds. Panoramic radiography s

A previously healthy 26-year-old female presented with one month of worsening low back pain radiating to the right lower extremity. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) without contrast of the lumbar spine demonstrated enhancement of the right sacroiliac joint. Sacroiliac joint aspiration followed by culture and microbiology revealed Streptomyces griseus as the cause of infectious sacroiliitis. Streptomyces griseus is a part of the normal human flora that produces a plethora of secondary metabolites applied in various medications such as streptomycin. This represents the first described case of in

Joint hypermobility syndrome refers to increased joint flexibility beyond the normal range of motion. This syndrome has a benign form known as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type 3. This is a disorder in which hypermobility is accompanied by clinical manifestations in the absence of any systemic disease. A clinical finding associated with this condition is postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. The following is a rare case of joint hypermobility syndrome and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. The relevance of this case report lies in the impact that this disease had on the patient's qualit

OBJECTIVE: First carpometacarpal (CMC1) joint osteoarthritis (OA) is typically understood as part of the disease entity of hand OA. However, CMC1 joint OA often occurs in isolation or is a primary source of symptoms. The aim of the current study was to explore the experiences of New Zealanders with CMC1 joint OA to better understand the unique impact of this condition, ascertain outcomes of importance, and identify treatment targets.
METHODS: In this pragmatic qualitative study, patients who either reported a history suggestive of CMC1 joint OA or had been diagnosed by a physician were recrui

Scrub typhus is a common Rickettsial infection which is endemic in tropical regions. It is characterised by fever, eschar, thrombocytopenia, lymphadenopathy and organomegaly. Scrub typhus has significant morbidity and mortality owing to its multisystemic involvement. Non-inflammatory polyarthritis of small joints is an uncommon presentation in paediatric scrub typhus. We discuss a five-year-old boy who presented with fever, small joint polyarthritis, hepatosplenomegaly and pathognomonic eschar with positive scrub IgM ELISA. Arthritis resolved completely with doxycycline therapy without any def…

BACKGROUND Bacteroides fragilis (B. fragilis) is an uncommon cause of native joint septic arthritis (NJSA). It is an anaerobic gram-negative rod that is normally found in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary system, and skin, and thus is rarely isolated from the musculoskeletal system. Risk factors for B. fragilis NJSA include inflammatory arthritis, malignancy, sickle cell disease, and ischemic heart disease. CASE REPORT We discuss a case of a 65-year-old man with coronary artery disease, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and gout, who presented with 5 days of right kne

Bone degradation of the condylar surface is seen in temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA); however, the initial changes occur in the subchondral bone. This cross-sectional study was performed to evaluate 23 subchondral bone imaging biomarkers for TMJ OA. The sample consisted of high-resolution cone beam computed tomography scans of 84 subjects, divided into two groups: TMJ OA (45 patients with TMJ OA) and control (39 asymptomatic subjects). Six regions of each mandibular condyle scan were extracted for computation of five bone morphometric and 18 grey-level texture-based variables. T

Over time, different techniques have been described to obtain broad access to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), in order to allow good visibility, minimizing post-operative complications at the same time. Most of these techniques have been very useful to perform joint replacement using custom made prostheses, varying in its extension, aesthetics and functional results. The aim of this study was to present the authors' experience using the Blair approach modified by Fernández in 2015, to replace failed TMJ prostheses, when distortion of the surgical reference points has occurred.
