The risks of developing leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma from living near industrial facilities were evaluated among men from Iowa and Minnesota in a population-based, case-control study. We found a statistically significant increase in the risk of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (RR = 1.4) and a slight, nonsignificant excess for leukemia (RR = 1.2) among individuals who lived .8-3.2 km (1/2-2 miles) from a factory. Cytogenetic studies on 44 patients with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) were reported. The incidence of leukemia without detectable chromosomal changes was 25%. By use of limiting dilution assay, it is confirmed that most of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia, such as chronic myelogenous leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome, had defect in the stage of pluripotent hemopoietic stem cell. With light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, colonies which originated from leukemic progenitor cells (L-CFU) were ascertained. The incorporated rates of 3H-TdR and 55 + 59Fe showed that proliferative manner of LCFU was apparently different from that of normal adults.

Thirty-four children after multiple relapse or with refractory acute lymphoblastic leukemia were treated with two novel combinations of high-dose cytosine arabinoside, methotrexate, asparaginase, vincristine, and prednisone. The karyotype of 124 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), who were diagnosed on the basis of the FAB classification, were studied according to numerical, structural abnormalities and the presence or absence of translocations. A patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia presented with recurrent episodes of severe neutropenia. This neutropenia was initially responsive to prednisone but eventually became refractory. A spindle-cell thymoma was diagnosed and resected with dramatic improvement in his granulocytopenia. Both autologous and heterologous granulocyte macrophage colony growth were clearly inhibited by the patient's serum. This is the first reported case of severe granulocytopenia associated with a thymoma that seemed to be reversed following thymectomy.

To study the survival and prognostic factor of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia, 78 newly-diagnosed cases between January 1982 and June 1987 in National Taiwan University Hospital were reviewed and analyzed. They were stratified into two groups, i.e. standard-risk (SR) and high-risk (HR), according to their pre-treatment leukocyte count and age. When analyzing the Roentgen documentation of 102 leukaemic children, the prevalence of bone anomalies of the extremities, pelvis and vertebral column was studied. The frequency of the abnormal or unusual findings was compared with that of 660 control subjects. The frequency of osseous anomalies proved to be 2 to 3 times higher in leukaemic children tha in the controls. Considering the number of ossification centers and the presence nutritional canal of vertebrae, in leukaemic children the ossification seemed to be retarded.

A full-term male infant was born with skin findings suggesting a blueberry muffin appearance. Biopsy of a cutaneous nodule was consistent with monoblastic leukemia cutis, and bone marrow examination confirmed the diagnosis of leukemia. The infant has remained well 2 years after spontaneous resolution of the cutaneous eruption. Infiltrative neoplasms should be considered along with congenital infections and hematologic disorders in the differential diagnosis of a newborn with a blueberry muffin appearance.

Out of a series of 36 patients with chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML), five cases are reported with the association of this hemopathy to solid neoplasms. In two patients this last was a cutaneous tumour, while the remainders had, respectively, papilloma of the bladder, carcinoma of the sigma, and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.
