Magnetic Targeting Nanocarriers Combined with Focusing Ultrasound for Enhanced Intracerebral Hemorrhage Therapy.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality around the world, and surgery is still the most direct and effective way to remove ICH. However, the potential risks brought by surgery, such as normal brain tissue damage, post-operative infection, and difficulty in removing deep hematoma, are still the main problems in the surgical treatment of ICH. Activation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) is reported to show a good therapeutic effect in hematoma clearance. Herein, a magnetic targeting nanocarrier loaded with a PPARγ agonis

Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging as an Adjunct to the Evaluation of Cardiovascular Involvement in Diabetes Mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a new epidemic which has presented an immense increase in recent decades, due to the rapid increase in obesity. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) significantly reduces life expectancy and is the main cause of death in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Strict glycemic control is a well-established method to combat microvascular CVD of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM); its role against CVD of the T2DM risk has not been well documented. Therefore, the most efficient prevention is multifactorial risk factor reduction. Recently, the European Society of Cardiology published its 20

Feasibility of in vivo magnetic resonance elastography of mesenteric adipose tissue in Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Although there is growing evidence that functional involvement and structural changes of mesenteric adipose tissue (MAT) influence the course of Crohn's disease (CD), its viscoelastic properties remain elusive. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the viscoelastic properties of MAT in CD using magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), providing reference values for CD diagnosis. METHODS: In this prospective proof-of-concept study, 31 subjects (CD: n=11; healthy controls: n=20) were consecutively enrolled in a specialized care center for inflammatory bowel diseases (tertiary/quaternary

Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography using T2 preparation pulse: quantitative and qualitative analyses.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) may exhibit ghosting and blurring artifacts due to irregular breathing cycles, which can be overcome by shortening the shot duration. T2 preparation pulse enables heavy T2 contrast even with a shorter TE by use of the shortened shot duration; therefore, a technique using T2 preparation pulse combined with 3D turbo spin-echo MRCP (TPT-MRCP) was constructed. PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical usefulness of TPT-MRCP in both navigation and breath-hold sequences compared to the conventional method. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We obtained nav

Cardiac disease in Cushing's syndrome. Emphasis on the role of cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Cushing's Syndrome (CS) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In endogenous CS, cardiovascular mortality remains increased for up to 15 years post remission of hypercortisolism. Similarly, patients with exogenous CS have 4-fold increased incidence of cardiovascular events, regardless of pre-existing cardiovascular disease (CVD). OBJECTIVE: To present the pathophysiology, prognosis, clinical and imaging phenotype of cardiac disease in CS. METHODS: A Pubmed search for cardiac disease in CS over the last 20 years was conducted using combinations of rel

High-Resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Endovascular Treatment of Vertebrobasilar Junction Stenosis.

INTRODUCTION: Vertebrobasilar junction (VBJ) stenosis is a challenge in endovascular treatment due to structural variants and complexities. The role of high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HRMRI) in endovascular treatment for patients with severe VBJ stenosis is uncertain. CASE REPORT: Four patients with symptomatic VBJ stenosis underwent HRMRI of the vessel wall before endovascular treatment. In 3 patients, the VBJ could not be visualized on luminal imaging. One of them had a hypoplastic artery and 2 of them had severe stenotic arteries on HRMRI. HRMRI showed an artery with a negative

Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance for the Evaluation of Arrhythmogenic Substrates in Patients with Systemic Autoimmunity: An Update.

Patients with systemic autoimmunity due to autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs) or sarcoidosis frequently present with systemic manifestations including cardiac involvement. Cardiac rhythm disturbances and specifically ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) may affect the prognosis of these patients. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is a non-invasive imaging modality that can provide valuable diagnostic and prognostic information in patients with ARDs or systemic autoimmunity in general. In this narrative review, we briefly present the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms contributing

Supporting claustrophobic patients during magnetic resonance imaging examination- the radiographer perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Some patients cannot complete their magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations because of claustrophobia. Evidence showed that supportive instruction is an effective intervention used to assist claustrophobic patients in MRI. However, the effectiveness of this intervention depends on the experience and education level of the MRI radiographer. This study aimed to understand the views of MRI radiographers on supporting claustrophobic patients and develop a guide to improve the effectiveness of the intervention. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive approach utilising focus group d

Unresolved Issues Associated with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Treatment of Chronic Tinnitus.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been investigated as a potential treatment for chronic tinnitus for 20 years. Numerous studies have reported that repetitive TMS (rTMS) has demonstrated efficacy for reducing the severity of tinnitus and its associated co-conditions such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia. However, some researchers have reported that active rTMS is no more effective than sham (placebo) rTMS as a tinnitus treatment method. There are numerous unresolved issues in this field that need to be addressed before rTMS can become a viable treatment for tinnitus. These issues

Facile and selective separation of anthraquinones by alizarin-modified iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles.

Anthraquinones are widely distributed in higher plants and possess broad biological activities. The conventional separation procedures for isolating anthraquinones from the plant crude extracts require multiple extraction, concentration, and column chromatography steps. In this study, we synthesized three alizarin (AZ)-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@AZ, Fe3O4@SiO2-AZ, and Fe3O4@SiO2-PEI-AZ) by thermal solubilization method. Fe3O4@SiO2-PEI-AZ showed strong magnetic responsiveness, high methanol/water dispersion, good recyclability, and high loading capacity for anthraquinones. To evaluate

Site-Specific Modification of Single Domain Antibodies by Enzyme-Immobilized Magnetic Beads.

Nanobodies as imaging agents and drug conjugates have shown great potential for cancer diagnostics and therapeutics. However, site-specific modification of a nanobody with microbial transglutaminase (mTGase) encounters problems in protein separation and purification. Here, we describe a facile yet reliable strategy of immobilizing mTGase onto magnetic beads for site-specific nanobody modification. The mTGase immobilized on magnetic beads (MB-mTGase) exhibits catalytic activity nearly equivalent to that of the free mTGase, with good reusability and universality. Magnetic separation simplifies t
