Pulmonary immune cells and inflammatory cytokine dysregulation are associated with mortality of IL-1R1 -/-mice infected with influenza virus (H1N1).

Respirovirus infection can cause viral pneumonia and acute lung injury (ALI). The interleukin-1 (IL-1) family consists of proinflammatory cytokines that play essential roles in regulating immune and inflammatory responses in vivo. IL-1 signaling is associated with protection against respiratory influenza virus infection by mediation of the pulmonary anti-viral immune response and inflammation. We analyzed the infiltration lung immune leukocytes and cytokines that contribute to inflammatory lung pathology and mortality of fatal H1N1 virus-infected IL-1 receptor 1 (IL-1R1) deficient mice. White matter abnormalities are associated with overall cognitive status in blast-related mTBI.

Blast-related mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a common injury of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Research has suggested that blast-related mTBI is associated with chronic white matter abnormalities, which in turn are associated with impairment in neurocognitive function. However, findings are inconsistent as to which domains of cognition are affected by TBI-related white matter disruption. Recent evidence that white matter abnormalities associated with blast-related mTBI are spatially variable raises the possibility that the associated cognitive impairment is also heterogeneous. Thus, the

Anxiety among adults with a history of childhood adversity: Psychological resilience moderates the indirect effect of emotion dysregulation.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been widely identified as risk factors for increased symptoms of anxiety across the lifespan. Little is known, however, about the processes by which ACEs set the stage for increased symptoms of anxiety in adulthood. The current study evaluated whether emotion dysregulation and psychological resilience influence the association between ACEs and symptoms of anxiety. METHODS: A sample of adult primary care patients (N=4006) completed self-report measures related to ACEs, symptoms of anxiety, emotion dysregulation, and psychological resilience

Reduced fractional anisotropy in patients with major depressive disorder and associations with vascular stiffness.

Previous studies revealed several alterations of the cerebral white matter in patients with major depressive disorder. However, it is unknown if these alterations are associated with vascular changes in the brain and other body parts. We compared diffusion tensor imaging derived fractional anisotropy in a well characterized sample of middle-aged patients with major depressive disorder (n = 290) and never-depressed controls (n = 346) by the method of tract-based spatial statistics. Subsequently, the potential role of pulse wave velocity as a mediator of depression- and age-related changes in ex

Pathways from parental educational attainment to adolescent blood pressure.

OBJECTIVES: Lower parental education is associated with higher adolescent blood pressure (BP). We examined the contribution of modifiable risk factors from infancy to adolescence that could potentially explain the link between parental education and SBP and DBP in the offspring. METHODS: In a prospective Chinese birth cohort, 'Children of 1997' of 5604 adolescents (68% follow-up), we analyzed the relation between parental educational attainment and sex-specific, age-specific and height-specific BP z-scores at ∼13 years. Using mediation analysis, we examined the contribution of household incom

Direct and indirect influences of childhood abuse on depression symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: It is known that the onset, progression, and prognosis of major depressive disorder are affected by interactions between a number of factors. This study investigated how childhood abuse, personality, and stress of life events were associated with symptoms of depression in depressed people. METHODS: Patients with major depressive disorder (N = 113, 58 women and 55 men) completed the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Neuroticism Extroversion Openness Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), the Child Abuse and Trauma Scale (CATS), and the Life Experiences Survey (LES), which are se

The lateral prefrontal cortex mediates the hyperalgesic effects of negative cognitions in chronic pain patients.

UNLABELLED: Although high levels of negative affect and cognitions have been associated with greater pain sensitivity in chronic pain conditions, the neural mechanisms mediating the hyperalgesic effect of psychological factors in patients with pain disorders are largely unknown. In this cross-sectional study, we hypothesized that 1) catastrophizing modulates brain responses to pain anticipation and 2) anticipatory brain activity mediates the hyperalgesic effect of different levels of catastrophizing in fibromyalgia (FM) patients. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we scanned the brai

Posttraumatic stress, heart rate variability, and the mediating role of behavioral health risks.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been linked to reduced heart rate variability (HRV), which is in turn a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and death. Although hyperarousal and anxiety are thought to underlie this association, behavioral health risks, including smoking, alcohol dependence, obesity, and sleep disturbance, represent potential mechanisms linking PTSD and HRV. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, short-term laboratory-based and 24-hour ambulatory measures of HRV were collected from 227 young adults (18-39 years), 107 of whom were diagnosed as having PTSD. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) reduces anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation in veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety, depression, and pain are major problems among veterans, despite the availability of standard medical options within the Veterans Health Administration. Complementary and alternative approaches for these symptoms have been shown to be appealing to veterans. One such complementary and alternative approach is mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), a brief course that teaches mindfulness meditation with demonstrated benefits for mood disorders and pain. METHODS: We prospectively collected data on MBSR's effectiveness among 79 veterans at an urban Veterans Health Adminis

Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Later-Life Sarcopenia Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Mediating and Moderating Roles of Depressive Symptoms and Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with sarcopenia, but underlying pathways remain unclear. This study aimed to examine whether depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment mediate or moderate the associations of threat-related and deprivation-related ACEs with sarcopenia. METHODS: Three waves (2011-2015) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (n = 5003, aged ≥ 60 years) were used. Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards regression tested associations of ACE dimensions, depressive symptoms, and cognitive impairment with sarcopenia. Four-way

Oral microbiota mediates the association of healthy dietary patterns with lower risk of advanced cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Existing evidence links diet and the oral microbiota to individual cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic conditions, but these relationships have not been extended to the progressive stages of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome. We therefore investigated the associations among dietary patterns, the oral microbiome, and CKM stages. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 2051 representative US adults. Oral microbiota was characterized via 16S rRNA gene sequencing of oral rinse samples. Dietary patterns were assessed using multiple dietary indexes derived from 24-h

The impact of ADHD symptoms on insomnia severity in adolescents: the mediating role of emotion dysregulation, self-compassion, and experiential avoidance.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with ADHD often experience insomnia, yet the mechanisms underlying this relationship, particularly among Middle Eastern populations, are underexplored. Grounded in the cognitive-emotional framework of insomnia, the present study examined the mediating roles of self-compassion, emotion dysregulation, and experiential avoidance in the association between ADHD symptoms and insomnia severity among Iranian adolescents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 354 adolescents (47.5% female; M = 16.47 years, SD = 1.31) drawn from secondary schools in Tehran via multi-stage
