Role of proteins in phytoremediation and mycoremediation for heavy metal removal: a focus on protein-based remediation.

Heavy metal contamination is a global issue caused by persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulative elements such as cadmium, lead, arsenic, chromium, and mercury. Unlike organic pollutants, these metals resist biodegradation and accumulate in soils, water, and living organisms, creating severe ecological and health risks. Conventional remediation techniques are expensive, energy-intensive, and produce secondary waste, driving the need for sustainable alternatives. Bioremediation, particularly phytoremediation and mycoremediation, has emerged as an eco-friendly and cost-effective strategy. Recent stu

Packing Order Control in Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks by Tuning Ligand Oxidation State.

Conductive metal-organic frameworks (c-MOFs), composed of metal nodes and redox-active ligands, have attracted growing interest due to the coexistence of porosity and charge transport. Notably, their electrical performance is closely related to the packing and ligand oxidation state within the framework, which has rarely been explored. Typical divalent metal nodes favor saturated intralayer square-planar coordination to ligands in a single oxidation state, thereby predetermining the framework topology. Here, we report a packing and topology control strategy, achieved by tuning the ligand oxida

Risk Assessment of Toxic Heavy Metal Exposure in Selected Seafood Species from Thailand.

This study evaluates the risk of toxic heavy metal exposure in 20 commonly consumed seafood species from Thailand, focusing on arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb). Seafood is nutritionally valuable but may accumulate harmful metals due to environmental contamination from industrial, agricultural, and medical sources. Samples were collected from markets in Chonburi, prepared through boiling, frying, and grilling, and analyzed using ICP-MS/MS. Most toxic metal levels were within Thai regulatory limits; however, Wedge shell and Musk crab showed arsenic concentrations exceeding

Biomineralization-mimicking cooperative assembly for tailoring anisotropic hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks.

Anisotropic hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with asymmetric morphologies hold great promise for improving the utilization efficiency of the MOF matrix, thereby expanding their applicability. However, imparting MOFs with precisely controlled porous architectures and morphologies remains challenging. Here, an ingenious soft/hard matter phase transition co-mediated assembly strategy is developed to mimic the biomineralization process for synthesizing anisotropic UiO-66-NH2 mesoporous nanobowls (UiO-66-NH2 mesoNBs). This process relies on in situ generated amorphous lamellar

Fluorescence-Based Soil Survival Analysis of the Xenobiotic- and Metal-Detoxifying Streptomyces sp. MC1.

Streptomyces sp. MC1, a bacterium isolated from an environment contaminated with organic and inorganic pollutants, can reduce chromium and degrade lindane, making it a promising candidate for bioremediation. However, a major challenge in bioremediation trials is monitoring bacteria survival in soil. To assess the survival of Streptomyces sp. MC1 during bioremediation, we introduced fluorescence tagging and a selectable marker into this strain by intergeneric conjugation from Escherichia coli. Conjugation assays were performed using two E. coli strains (ET12567/pUZ8002 or S17-1) and Streptomyce

Senescence-Primed Ferroptosis Enabled by a Metal-Organic Framework Nanoplatform for Enhanced Cancer Therapy.

Inhibition of cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) offers a promising approach for selective cancer therapy by arresting aberrant cell proliferation and inducing tumor cell senescence. However, the limited efficacy and acquired resistance resulting from primarily cytostatic rather than cytotoxic effects have hindered broader clinical applications. To overcome these limitations, we propose a senescence-primed ferroptosis strategy using a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nanoplatform (ZPG) that codelivers CDK4/6 inhibitor (palbociclib) and ferroptosis inducer (gallium ions, Ga3+) to enhance antitu

Biologically safe restoration of heavy metal-contaminated soils through plant-microbe synergy.

Abandoned mines have created extensive idle areas contaminated with heavy metals (HMs). Conventional remediation methods are often costly, environmentally disruptive, and pose risks to human health. As a sustainable alternative, a biological approach utilizing metal-tolerant plant growth-promoting bacteria (mPGPBs) was employed to remediate HM-contaminated soils and assess their biological safety. Five mPGPB strains-Pseudarthrobacter sp., Pseudomonas sp., and Agrobacterium sp.-were isolated from contaminated mine soils and screened for metal tolerance and plant growth-promoting capabilities. Synergistic enhancement of ferroptosis via a multi-functional metal-coordinated nanoplatform for cancer therapy.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)is a highly heterogeneous and treatment-resistant malignancy, where conventional treatments are largely hindered by tumor microenvironment (TME) barriers. Ferroptosis, a non-apoptotic form of regulated cell death driven by Fenton reaction-mediated hydroxyl radical (•OH) generation and lipid peroxidation, has emerged as a promising strategy to overcome tumor resistance. However, ferroptosis efficiency in HCC is severely restricted by insufficient hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), elevated glutathione (GSH), and temperature-dependent reaction kinetics. To address these limit

A Metal-Peptide Framework as a Nanozyme for the Attenuation of Amyloid‑β Aggregation and Reactive Oxygen Species.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disease characterized by abnormal performance in memory, cognition, and language, and it imposes a heavy economic burden worldwide. Amyloidosis and oxidative stress are highly associated with AD progression, yet limited clinical drugs are available at present. Nanozymes exhibit diverse enzyme-mimetic activities and have attracted widespread attention as a promising alternative candidate for scavenging reactive oxygen species to maintain the oxidation-antioxidation balance in cells. Neurotoxic amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregation is also a cri

The serum trace metal signature distinguishes patients with psychiatric disorders from healthy controls.

Mental health disorders (MHD) are conditions marked by disturbances in thinking, mood, or behavior that can cause significant distress or impair daily functioning. Diagnosis remains challenging, particularly in precision medicine, due to the scarcity of reliable biomarkers as objective diagnostic tools and external validators. This study investigates essential trace metals, cofactors in vital enzymes, as potential biomarkers for MHD. A total of 168 patients with mood spectrum disorders (MSD), schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), and personality disorders (PD) and 61 healthy controls (HC) we

Acquired Brown Syndrome as a Postoperative Complication of Orbital Wall Fracture Repair with Metallic Mesh.

Background: Surgical repair of orbital fractures comes with risks. One rare risk is interference with the actions of the superior oblique tendon-muscle complex causing an acquired Brown syndrome. We present the case of a 45-year-old man who developed acquired Brown syndrome after undergoing repair of a large orbital floor and medial orbital wall fracture using a titanium mesh implant. A case report was prepared to discuss a rare surgical risk with open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of an orbital wall fracture. Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed. Results: Post-operative op

Use of hydrophilic pharmaceutical excipients to modulate release of metal ions from silicone elastomers.

Silicone elastomers based on polydimethylsiloxane are biocompatible and non-biodegradable thermosetting polymers used in various drug delivery applications, including subdermal implants, vaginal rings, and intrauterine devices. Without exception, all marketed silicone elastomer drug delivery products provide sustained or controlled release of highly hydrophobic small drug molecules, since drug solubility in the silicone matrix is a prerequisite for molecular diffusion and release. We are interested in developing multipurpose silicone elastomer vaginal rings for local administration of metal io

Smart Hydrogel Doped by Metal-Organic Frameworks for Renewable Self-Pumping Enzymatic Reactors.

The construction of high-performance immobilized enzymes is vastly desired for green biotransformation. Although hydrogels offer significant potential for facilitating biomedical applications of enzymes due to their flexibility, macroscopic processability, and extracellular matrix-like properties. However, maintaining enzymatic activity and recyclability within bulk hydrogels remains a formidable challenge due to restricted passive mass transfer and enzyme leakage. Herein, inspired by the heart's blood-pumping mechanism, a smart metal-organic framework (MOFs)-doped hydrogel is developed for en

Chemical Activation of a Single Melamine Molecule via Isomerization Followed by Metalation with a Copper Atom.

Scanning probe methods have very successfully been used for inducing on-surface reactions and imaging with high resolution the reaction partners at the single-molecule level. However, the entire sequence of chemically activating an educt, identifying its reactive site, running a chemical reaction, and quantifying the involved forces and energies has been missing to date. Here, the organic molecule melamine adsorbed on Cu(100) serves as a single-molecule model system for activation via tautomerization and subsequent metalation with a single Cu atom.
