A large outbreak of acute gastroenteritis occurred over a 5-week period aboard an aircraft carrier. The estimated cumulative attack rate was 13% among the 4,500-man crew. Eight percent of the crew sought medical attention, nearly all of whom missed 1 day or more of work. The ultrastructural features of histiocytes in the bone marrow (BM) were studied in a febrile, splenomegalic and pancytopenic Sudanese patient who was diagnosed by one of us as visceral leishmaniasis (VL) associated with low level of parasitaemia and mimicking malignant histiocytosis (MH). The cerebral arteries in seven cases of Moyamoya disease, demonstrated by angiography were observed by light, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. In two cases, the lumen of the terminal portion of the internal carotid artery was completely occluded by proliferated connective tissue. The characteristic pathologic change was extensive destruction of the smooth muscle cells and the elastica interna. Degeneration and necrosis of smooth muscle cells were obvious in the media. Many condensed organelles and other elements of cellular destruction were dispersed throughout the interstitium.

Scanning and transmission electron microscopy are used to reveal the internal anatomy and ultrastructure of the cardia which is the source of the triple layered peritrophic membrane in the blowfly Lucilia cuprina. Within the cardia, rings of secretory cells (formation zones) and non-secretory tissue (valvula cardiaca) interlock to secrete and mould the layers of membrane. Formation zone cells have abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi and secretory vesicles. A portion of midgut just posterior to the formation zone is covered by close-packed microvilli connected by septate-like junctions.

Tyzzer's disease has been detected in nine unrelated, commercial rabbitries. During the acute stage of the disease, recently weaned rabbits showed profuse watery diarrhoea. Mortality was between 14.2 and 41.2% during the first three weeks of the outbreaks.
