Accurate Measurement of Airway Morphology on Chest CT Images.

In recent years, the ability to accurately measuring and analyzing the morphology of small pulmonary structures on chest CT images, such as airways, is becoming of great interest in the scientific community. As an example, in COPD the smaller conducting airways are the primary site of increased resistance in COPD, while small changes in airway segments can identify early stages of bronchiectasis. To date, different methods have been proposed to measure airway wall thickness and airway lumen, but traditional algorithms are often limited due to resolution and artifacts in the CT image. In this w

Cross-frequency power coupling between hierarchically organized face-selective areas.

Neural oscillations are linked to perception and behavior and may reflect mechanisms for long-range communication between brain areas. We developed a causal model of oscillatory dynamics in the face perception network using magnetoencephalographic data from 51 normal volunteers. This model predicted induced responses to faces by estimating oscillatory power coupling between source locations corresponding to bilateral occipital and fusiform face areas (OFA and FFA) and the right superior temporal sulcus (STS). These sources showed increased alpha and theta and decreased beta power as well as se

Dynamic interactions between local surface cues, distal landmarks, and intrinsic circuitry in hippocampal place cells.

A number of computational models of hippocampal place cells incorporate attractor neural network architecture to simulate key findings in the place cell literature, including the properties of pattern completion, firing in the absence of visual input, and nonlinear responses to environmental manipulations. To test for evidence of attractor dynamics, ensembles of place cells were recorded using multiple-tetrode techniques. After many days of experience in an environment with salient local surface cues on a circular track and salient distal landmarks on the wall, the local surface cues were rota

Intelligent computing and sensitivity analysis of unsteady darcy-forchheimer nanofluid flow over an inclined permeable disk subject to thompson-troian slip conditions.

The present study numerically investigates the unsteady three-dimensional electromagnetohydrodynamic (EMHD) flow of a dual-fractional nanofluid (DFNF) comprising cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) and water flowing over an inclined porous rotating disk (PRD) using a combination of numerical simulation and soft computing techniques. Both the velocity slip and the thermal convective boundary conditions are complex non-linear. Time-dependent similarity transformations are applied to the governing partial differential equations to convert them to a system of coupled ordinary differential equations, and then

A nested optimization framework for sound speed imaging and uncertainty estimation in ultrasound computed tomography via Mamba-regularized full waveform inversion.

Full-waveform inversion (FWI) for ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) has recently been investigated extensively for high-resolution sound-speed (SS) imaging. However, the nonconvexity of FWI hampers global convergence, yielding limited robustness and artifacts that constrain clinical applicability. Existing methods often struggle to balance computational efficiency with robustness, or require extensive hyperparameter tuning. Furthermore, uncertainty estimation for SS imaging in USCT has attracted growing interest, but existing methods remain insufficiently analyzed and validated through in

Common and distinct neural substrates of sentence production and comprehension.

Functional neuroimaging and lesion-symptom mapping investigations implicate a left frontal-temporal-parietal network for sentence processing. The majority of studies have focused on sentence comprehension, with fewer in the domain of sentence production, which have not fully elucidated overlapping and/or unique brain structures associated with the two domains, particularly for sentences with noncanonical word order. Using voxel-based lesion symptom mapping (VLSM) we examined the relationship between lesions within the left hemisphere language network and both sentence comprehension and product

Traversing the solution space of neural networks with Hessian Null Space Continuation.

On a single task, deep networks can learn many solutions, depending on their optimizer, training data, architecture, and hyperparameters. Many of these solutions are mode-connected: rather than isolated points in weight space, they are connected by low-loss regions. Yet how their internal computation varies within these regions is unknown. A parallel line of work has identified the degeneracy of neural representations: many networks reach similar training loss with distinct internal structures. However, it is unclear how these solutions are related in weight space. We unify these subfields and

Hierarchical feature binding in a spiking neural network model of the primate ventral visual pathway.

Feature binding - how the brain encodes which features are part of other features to form representations of the coherent objects we perceive - remains an unsolved problem in neuroscience. Despite progress towards a solution, major theories either lack detailed explanations at the neuronal level or rely on biologically unrealistic simplifications, and none adequately account for the representation of hierarchical information, which is crucial to our perception of the world. To address this, a solution termed binding by polychrony has been proposed to explain how hierarchical feature relationsh

Neural oscillation mechanisms of repetitive subconcussive impacts: a network study of microstate-specific cross-frequency coupling.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive subconcussive impacts are linked to headache pathophysiology, yet the role of electroencephalography (EEG) microstates and cross-frequency coupling in repetitive subconcussive (SC) neural alterations remains unclear. This study investigated microstate-specific cross-frequency coupling network (MCFCN) abnormalities in SC-exposed individuals to uncover mechanisms underlying headache vulnerability. METHODS: Resting-state EEG was recorded from 16 experienced male parachuters aged 18-25 years (SC group) and 16 demographically matched healthy male controls of the same age ran

Are All Anxieties Created Equal? Stress-related Networks and Anxiety Phenotypes in Old Age.

OBJECTIVE: The dysregulation of stress-related networks due to chronic symptoms such as severe worry and/or rumination is one of the putative pathways linking anxiety in late-life with cognitive decline and increased cardiovascular burden. Symptoms such as severe worry or rumination respond poorly to standard treatment and drive the morbidity associated with anxiety in older adults. We assessed if any of the neural networks anchored in the stress-related regions of interest (ROIs) are associated with distinct anxiety phenotypes (worry, rumination and global anxiety). METHODS: We recruited old

Artists Can Design Memory, and AI Can Predict It.

Can artists deliberately design artworks to be remembered-or forgotten? Across three experiments, we tested whether visual-memory outcomes can be shaped through artistic design and how they are predicted by artists, laypeople, and artificial intelligence. We launched a nationwide art contest in which artists submitted works intended to be memorable or forgettable. Using recognition tasks with adults based in the United States (119 from Amazon Mechanical Turk, 892 from Prolific, and 62 visitors from a Chicago gallery), we found that artists achieved their intended memory outcomes. However, thei

Ultrasound-assisted enzymatic synthesis of medium- and long-chain triacylglycerols from tricaprylin and algal oil.

Medium and long-chain triacylglycerols (MLCTs) are functional lipids, but their efficient synthesis in various systems remains challenging. An ultrasound-assisted enzymatic interesterification process was developed using tricaprylin and algal oil as substrates. The optimized enzymatic conditions were obtained by artificial neural network modeling. The structure of enzyme and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of enzymatic process were both evaluated. The results showed that the MLCT yield reached 69.16%, with Cy-Cy-DHA as the predominant product (28.99%). Only slight structural changes were ob

Regularised Spectral Estimation for High-Dimensional Point Processes.

Advances in modern technology have enabled the simultaneous recording of neural spiking activity across large numbers of neurons, which statistically can be represented by a multivariate point process. We characterise the second order structure of this process via the spectral density matrix, a frequency domain equivalent of the covariance matrix. In the context of neuronal analysis, statistics based on the spectral density matrix can be used to infer connectivity in the brain network between individual neurons. However, the high-dimensional nature of spike train data mean that it is often dif

All-optical control of nonlinear emission from resonant metasurfaces.

Nonlinear optics underpins a broad range of photonic technologies, from classical and quantum light sources to emerging nonlinear photonic neural networks. Yet, conventional nonlinear-optical devices exhibit static functionality: Their transfer characteristics and emission profiles are dictated by the intrinsic nonlinear process and locked by fabrication, limiting adaptability. Here, we introduce an ultrathin metasurface platform that enables dynamic reconfiguration of nonlinear functionality in a contactless fashion. By leveraging all-optical control of the optical torque exerted on liquid cr

Unconventional Spin Currents in Noncollinear Antiferromagnet Mn3Ge.

Unconventional spin-orbit torque (SOT) has garnered significant attention due to its potential for enabling energy-efficient and deterministic control of magnetization states. Noncollinear antiferromagnets (NCAFs) are considered ideal systems for generating such unconventional SOTs, making them highly promising for the development of next-generation spintronic devices. In this study, we report the generation of spin torques in noncollinear antiferromagnetic Mn3Ge, revealing the presence of unconventional spin polarizations (specifically, x- and z-polarized spin currents) by employing the spin-

Rapid wall shear stress prediction for aortic aneurysms using deep learning: a fast alternative to CFD.

Aortic aneurysms pose a significant risk of rupture. Previous research has shown that areas exposed to low wall shear stress (WSS) are more prone to rupture. Therefore, precise WSS determination on the aneurysm is crucial for rupture risk assessment. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a powerful approach for WSS calculations, but they are computationally intensive, hindering time-sensitive clinical decision-making. In this study, we propose a deep learning (DL) surrogate, MultiViewUNet, to rapidly predict time-averaged WSS (TAWSS) distributions on abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). Our novel

Segger: Fast and accurate cell segmentation of imaging-based spatial transcriptomics data.

The accurate assignment of transcripts to their cells of origin remains the Achilles heel of imaging-based spatial transcriptomics, despite being critical for nearly all downstream analyses. Current cell segmentation methods are prone to over- and under-segmentation, misassign transcripts to cells, require manual intervention, and suffer from low sensitivity and scalability. We introduce segger, a versatile graph neural network based on a heterogeneous graph representation of individual transcripts and cells, that frames cell segmentation as a transcript-to-cell link prediction task and can le
