Prevalence of Possible Depression and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder among Community Dwelling Adult Refugees and Refugee Applicants in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Because there has been a recent increase in refugee applications in Korea, the mental health of these refugees merits greater study. METHODS: We surveyed 129 refugees (including those in process of refugee application) and 121 migrant workers living in urban communities, using: the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for depressive symptoms, the Impact Event Scale-Revised for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and the health questionnaires used in 2016 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The majority of refugee subjects were from sub-Saharan

Advances in drug treatments for children and adolescents with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders.

Autism is a disorder characterised by abnormalities in language and social development, and repetitive behaviours. Antipsychotics, including haloperidol and risperidone, are the most widely studied drugs for reducing symptoms in children and adolescents with autism. When administered at relatively low dosages, antipsychotics have been shown to reduce repetitive behaviours (stereotypies) and social withdrawal, as well as a number of related symptoms, such as hyperactivity, aggression, self-abusive behaviour, temper tantrums, lability of mood and irritability. Adverse effects of antipsychotics i

Splenocyte subsets in normal and protein malnourished mice after long-term exposure to cocaine or morphine.

An experimental model which resembles human drug addiction was developed to study the effect of chronic drug (cocaine or morphine) administration on the immune system. As malnutrition has been associated with drug use, a low protein diet has been evaluated for its contribution to the impairment of the immune system during cocaine/morphine addiction. Female C57BL/6 mice that received a 20% or 4% casein diet were studied. Both drugs were administered intraperitoneally daily for 11 weeks and drugs were administered in increasing daily doses, beginning after 3 weeks of diet consumption. Doses of c

Nutritional dwarfing: a growth abnormality associated with reduced erythrocyte Na+,K(+)-ATPase activity.

To assess whether nonorganic nutritional dwarfing (ND) is accompanied by a biochemical adaptation to reduced nutrient intake, Na+,K(+)-ATPase activity of erythrocytes was examined. The study included 27 children with ND who demonstrated deteriorating linear growth and poor weight gain (caused by self-imposed dietary restrictions), 20 patients who initially exhibited ND growth patterns and subsequently experienced catch-up weight gain and growth after nutritional rehabilitation (NDR), and 32 normally growing children who had familial short stature and/or constitutional growth delay (F/CSS). [Endocrine behavior of battered children in the acute stage of the aggression].

To date the cause of growth retardation of children who have suffered physical abuse and emotional deprivation is unknown. Hypophyseal disturbances in these patients have been proposed of the cause but there are still several concerns on the dynamics of growth hormone secretion in these children. In this study, eleven out of sixteen patients had a low height without important diminution of corporal weight. Growth hormone under basal conditions was found to be elevated in battered children compared with a control group (15.2 +/- 4.7 ng/mL vs 9.6 +/- 1.9 ng/mL, p = 0.025). Two weeks after hospit

Gluten-Free Diet in the Context of Food and Nutrition Security, Food Safety, and Sustainability.

A gluten-free diet (GFD) is the only safe treatment for people with gluten-related disorders (GRDs). However, adherence to a GFD is challenging in different interconnected aspects related to food security, safety, and sustainability. These obstacles are critically contextualized in this review. In general, a GFD may increase the risk of food and nutritional insecurity, especially in populations with lower educational levels and purchasing power. Furthermore, avoiding cross-contact with foods containing gluten is challenging, reducing the options available for consumption and increasing fear an

Blind-Ending Esophageal Fistula Complicating Eosinophilic Esophagitis: Case Report and Up-to-Date Strategy from Diagnosis to Therapy.

Background and Clinical Significance: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory disorder characterized by esophageal dysfunction and dense eosinophilic infiltration. EoE frequently evolves into a fibrostenotic phenotype, in which uncontrolled inflammation drives progressive tissue remodeling. This evolution increases the risk of complex structural complications-most commonly fixed rings and strictures, and, in rare advanced cases, deep mural injury or fistulization-substantially increasing both diagnostic and therapeutic complexity. Case Presentation: This repor

Immunosenescence and immune-organ axis dysfunction: Potential of algal bioactives and nutritional interventions for healthy ageing.

Aging-associated immunosenescence disrupts various immune pathways-signaling, cellular, metabolic, epigenetic, and inflammatory mechanisms-leading to impaired bidirectional interactions between the immune system and organs. This dysfunction exacerbates geriatric conditions, including neurodegenerative disorders, chronic inflammation, and metabolic syndromes. This review introduces the concept of the immune-organ axis, an underexplored framework connecting immune dysregulation to organ-specific dysfunction. Nutritional interventions, including bioactive compounds, essential nutrients, functiona

Synergistic therapy for osteoporosis: a soybean osteogenic peptide-loaded fish gelatin/κ-carrageenan gel for enhanced bone regeneration.

Osteoporosis is a widespread skeletal disorder associated with reduced bone formation and increased fracture risk. Peptide-based therapeutics offer demonstrate anabolic potential for osteoporosis management but are limited by instability and rapid clearance. In this study, a dual-network hydrogel composed of fish gelatin (FG) and κ-carrageenan (κ-CG) was developed as a biocompatible carrier for a soybean-derived osteogenic peptide (SOP). The FG/κ-CG system exhibited provided mechanical integrity, hydration balance, and thermal stability, thereby enabling sustained peptide protection and contro

A Literature Review of the Renal Manifestations in Pediatric Celiac Disease and Its Associated Clinical Implications.

Celiac disease (CeD) is a chronic autoimmune disorder predominantly targeting the small intestine, in which the immune system reacts to gluten. It is increasingly recognized as a systemic condition with potential renal involvement and is observed in children worldwide. There have been reports of renal manifestations in children with CeD across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, including immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy (IgAN), diabetic nephropathy, and urolithiasis. These conditions are frequently associated with immune complex deposition, persistent inflammation, and

Introducing a Smart Toy in Eating Disorder Treatment: A Pilot Study.

Individuals with eating disorders (EDs) often encounter challenges related to body image, emotional, and sensory difficulties during nutritional rehabilitation. To address these challenges, a novel technology-enabled smart toy, Purrble, designed for immediate assistance in emotion regulation, is being explored. A mixed-method approach involving workshops, diaries, and focus groups was employed to examine the feasibility of Purrble as a therapeutic tool and its impact on participants' daily routines, sensory experiences, and emotional states. The study results demonstrate the engagement and acc

Subacute Combined Degeneration of the Spinal Cord Caused by an Impairment in the Functional Vitamin B12 Metabolic Pathway.

Subacute combined degeneration (SCD) of the spinal cord is a neurological disorder marked by degeneration in the dorsal and lateral columns, commonly linked to vitamin B12 deficiency. This report presents a case of SCD caused by a functional vitamin B12 deficiency. Although the patient displayed symptoms such as ataxia, sensory deficits, and motor impairment, initial lab tests showed normal serum vitamin B12 levels, complicating the diagnostic process. A comprehensive assessment identified poor nutrition as the root cause affecting the body's vitamin B12 metabolism. This case highlights the im

Oligomerization of 33-mer Gliadin Peptides: Supramolecular Assemblies in Celiac Disease.

The 33-mer gliadin peptide and its deamidated derivative, known as 33-mer DGP, are proteolytically resistant peptides central to the pathomechanism of celiac disease (CeD), the autoimmune presentation of gluten-related disorders (GRD). Both peptides can form spontaneous oligomers in the nanomolar concentration, leading to the formation of nanostructures. In other protein-related diseases, oligomers and aggregates are central in their pathomechanism; therefore, it was hypothesized that the oligomerization of proteolytical-resistant 33-mer gliadin peptides could be an underrecognized disease tri

[One-stage reconstructive jejunogastroplasty after previous multiple abdominal surgeries for left-sided diaphragm rupture complicated by gastric incarceration and necrosis].

Acute gastric necrosis is a rare event requiring organ resection. Delayed reconstruction is advisable in patients with peritonitis and sepsis. The most common complication of gastrectomy with reconstruction is failure of esophagojejunostomy and duodenal stump. In case of severe esophagojejunostomy failure, appropriate surgical approach and timing of reconstructive stage should be analyzed. We report one-stage reconstructive surgery in a patient with multiple fistulas after previous gastrectomy. Surgery included reconstructive jejunogastroplasty with jejunal graft interposition. The patient und
