A review on strontium ranelate long-term antifracture efficacy in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Osteoporotic fractures are one of the major causes of increased morbidity and mortality in postmenopausal women and the overall aging population. One of the major issues in the management of postmenopausal osteoporosis is to find a safe and effective treatment in the long term (>3 years) to achieve and maintain a reduction in the risk of fracture. Strontium ranelate (PROTELOS(®)) is a relatively novel drug, currently approved in Europe for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Strontium ranelate is the first agent of a new therapeutic class in osteoporosis, capable of both promoting bo

Dynamic and functional gait analysis of severely displaced intra-articular calcaneus fractures treated with a hinged external fixator or internal stabilization.

The purpose of this article was to assess functional gait outcome. Fifty-five patients with severely displaced intra-articular calcaneus fractures and soft tissue damage were evaluated prospectively with computerized dynamic pedography and a clinical scoring scale. The treatment protocol assigned 30 patients to open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and 25 to closed reduction and stabilization with a biomechanically tested hinged external fixator. Gait parameter was evaluated by measuring plantar pressure distribution, length of a double-step, double-step duration, standing duration, effe

Positive medial cortical support versus anatomical reduction for trochanteric hip fractures: Finite element analysis and biomechanical testing.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The anatomical reduction (AR) is usually considered the best option for fractures. Nevertheless, in unstable trochanteric hip fractures (UTHF), previous clinical reports found that the positive medial cortical support (PMCS, an over-reduction technique) attained higher mechanical stability, but this challenging clinical finding still needs experimental validation. METHODS: This study constructed in-silico and biomechanical PMCS and AR models, with the use of the most clinically-representative geometry design of fracture models, the multi-directional design in FE ana

The effect of 8 or 5 years of denosumab treatment in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis: results from the FREEDOM Extension study.

UNLABELLED: The FREEDOM study and its Extension provide long-term information about the effects of denosumab for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Treatment for up to 8 years was associated with persistent reduction of bone turnover, continued increases in bone mineral density, low fracture incidence, and a favorable benefit/risk profile. INTRODUCTION: This study aims to report the results through year 5 of the FREEDOM Extension study, representing up to 8 years of continued denosumab treatment in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. METHODS: Women who completed the 3-year FRE

Factors predicting complication and reoperation rates following surgical fixation of proximal humeral fractures.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to report complication and reoperation rates following non-arthroplasty fixation of shoulder fractures determined on the basis of observational, population-based data from all inpatient admissions in California over an eleven-year period. METHODS: Records from all inpatient hospital discharges and subsequent readmissions related to operative non-arthroplasty treatment of proximal humeral fractures were obtained for patients in California from December 1994 through December 2005. These admissions were evaluated to identify patient and hospital characte

Three-year denosumab treatment in postmenopausal Japanese women and men with osteoporosis: results from a 1-year open-label extension of the Denosumab Fracture Intervention Randomized Placebo Controlled Trial (DIRECT).

SUMMARY: A 12-month extension phase of DIRECT in Japanese subjects with osteoporosis showed that total 3 years of denosumab treatment in Japanese postmenopausal women and men with osteoporosis was associated with low fracture rates, persistent bone turnover marker (BTM) reductions, continuous bone mineral density (BMD) increases, and a favorable overall benefit/risk profile. INTRODUCTION: The DIRECT trial demonstrated that 2 years of treatment with denosumab 60 mg subcutaneously every 6 months significantly reduced the incidence of vertebral fracture compared to placebo in Japanese postmenopa

Endoscopic-assisted percutaneous fixation for displaced anterior inferior iliac spine avulsion fractures: a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS) avulsion fractures commonly occur in adolescent patients during sports activities. To systematically evaluate fracture severity and guide management, an adaptation of the Hetsroni classification system was used to categorize fractures on the basis of their displacement relative to the acetabular rim. Traditional open reduction and internal fixation reported satisfactory consolidation rates but complications such as lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) neuropathies, heterotopic ossifications (HO), and subspine impingement. The objectives of t

Treatment and Return to Sport in Athletes With Scaphoid Fractures: A Narrative Review.

Scaphoid fractures are the most common fracture of the carpal bone and frequently occur in athletic populations due to acute trauma or repetitive wrist loading. Management of these injuries in athletes is challenging because of the need to balance reliable fracture healing with timely return to sport. This narrative review summarizes current literature regarding treatment strategies, healing outcomes, and return-to-sport timelines in athletes with scaphoid fractures. We conducted a literature search using PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL between July 2025 and January 2026. A total of 862 records wer

Isolated Humeral Trochlear Fracture without Associated Elbow Injury: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Isolated fractures of the humeral trochlea are exceedingly rare because of the trochlea's deep intra-articular position and anatomical protection from direct trauma. The articular notch formed by the olecranon and coronoid processes shields the trochlea, which also lacks direct muscular or ligamentous attachments. Such fractures typically occur in conjunction with injuries involving the capitellum or the medial and lateral condyles. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 35-year-old male who sustained an isolated trochlear fracture following a physical assault. Initial anteroposte

Osteosynthesis using a plate lacking the anterior component and canulated cancellous screws to treat an avulsion fracture of the calcaneal tuberosity: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Avulsion fractures of the calcaneal tuberosity with significant displacement can cause soft tissue complications in the heel. However, a treatment strategy for calcaneal tuberosity fractures with poor heel-skin condition is yet to be established. Here, we report a case involving avulsion fracture of the calcaneal tuberosity presenting with superficial skin necrosis that was treated with a plate lacking the anterior component and screws inserted percutaneously. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 74-year-old woman presented with progressive right heel pain following an injury to her heel sus

Radial neck fractures in children secondary to horse-riding accidents: a comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: In the pediatric population, fractures of the radial neck account for approximately 1% of all fractures and can have substantial consequences. Given the growing popularity of horse riding and the high-energy traumas that this can entail, we sought to assess prognosis for radial neck fracture sustained in horse riding. HYPOTHESIS: Radial neck fracture sustained in horse riding is more severe and more frequently associated with other ipsilateral osteoarticular lesions which worsen prognosis. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We performed a multicenter retrospective comparative study in a cont

[Current indications for intramedullary bundle nailing].

Hackethal developed the nailing procedure named after him in 1959. The original method consisted in two steps: a non-sterile step in which mechanical reduction was performed with a traction device and a sterile step, i.e. nailing. The rationale of Hackethal nailing is an elastic jamming, which can only be achieved by obeying four rules: jamming of the nails in the cortical window, jamming then in the waist of the medullary cavity, spreading the bunch of nails in the metaphysis and filling up the conus of the medullary cavity with short nails. Hackethal believed it was possible to achieve an el

Functional Outcome of Distal Radius Fractures Managed by Minimally Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis: A Prospective Study of 20 Patients.

INTRODUCTION: A distal radius fracture is a common injury that affects people of all ages. However, there are various therapy approaches that are controversial. Casting with or without closed reduction has long been considered a feasible option for treating distal radius fractures; alternative options include K-wire fixation and ligamentotax are with external fixation. However, with limited function and impairments, the results are frequently poor. "Several studies have found that distal radius fractures treated with external fixation have good anatomical and functional outcomes, although ther
