PURPOSE: Orbital decompression is an established surgical treatment option for a range of orbital conditions. Traditionally, Ear, Nose and Throat surgeons have adopted the endoscopic route while ophthalmologists operate via an external approach. The authors report the outcomes of endonasal decompression performed by oculoplastic surgeons experienced in endonasal techniques.
METHODS: This was a retrospective case series of patients who underwent endoscopic orbital decompression for proptosis secondary to thyroid eye disease across 2 hospital sites between January 2011 and July 2018. Inclusion

A 58-year-old man presented with a 9-month history of a chronically draining surgical wound and low-grade periorbital inflammation following a right lateral orbitotomy. Imaging of the right orbit revealed a peculiar lesion in the right lateral orbit that was hypointense on both T1- and T2-weighted MRI with peripheral enhancement. Exploratory orbitotomy and biopsy established the diagnosis of a chronic foreign body inflammatory reaction to bone wax; symptoms resolved following evacuation of the retained foreign material.A 58-year-old man developed a chronic, symptomatic, inflammatory reaction t

OBJECTIVES: To present the clinical course and management of pediatric orbital complications (OC) secondary to acute rhinosinusitis (ARS), focusing on subperiosteal orbital abscess (SPOA) in toddlers (<2 years). A secondary aim was to identify and evaluate unique variables in toddlers which distinguish them from the older age group.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of all children with OC secondary to ARS admitted to a secondary medical center between 2005 and 2014 was conducted. Variables analyzed included age, gender, symptoms duration, previous antibiotic therapy, highest recorded tem

PURPOSE: To describe the rare entity of concurrent herpetic acute retinal necrosis (ARN) and orbital inflammation.
OBSERVATIONS: Two cases of ARN with simultaneous orbital inflammation are described. A 40-year old male presented with a painful left eye and hand motion visual acuity (VA). Both panuveitis and orbital inflammation with involvement of the sclera and optic nerve were observed. He was initially treated with oral steroid therapy, after which the orbital inflammation improved but the panuveitis remained. A diagnostic anterior chamber paracentesis was positive for HSV-2 by PCR. He was

Normal variations in the paranasal sinus region are well documented in literature. We present five cases of a little known normal variant, which can have serious implications for the patient as well as the operating surgeon. An ectopic infra orbital nerve canal coursing through the maxillary sinus has rarely been described in imaging literature. This may sometimes be mistaken for a simple septum in the maxillary sinus and may cause serious complications during Functional Endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) surgeries. We describe the imaging findings and present a brief review of the previous publi

Orbital metastases are known to arise from primary breast carcinoma followed by prostate, malignant melanoma, and lung carcinoma. We report a case of orbital metastasis as the initial presentation of an occult primary gall bladder carcinoma. The FDG PET/CT helped in localizing the occult distant primary site, which previously escaped detection, and also enabled the evaluation of orbital metastasis.

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: Orofacial pain has multifactorial causes and is often a diagnostic challenge. Misdiagnosis can result in morbidity or mortality due to misdirected and inappropriate treatment. A delay of necessary treatment, in cases of ominous illnesses, may result in its perpetuation or progression. The authors present a case report that illustrates these possibilities.
CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report describes a 36-year-old woman with the chief symptom of painless, limited mandibular movement. She also reported restricted movement of the left eye. She was previously diagnosed an

This study aims to identify risk factors associated with complications in retinoblastoma patients following primary and secondary enucleations with porous implant placement. A retrospective case-control study was performed between 2010 and 2015. Data pertaining to subjects' demographics, medical history, clinical, and pathological findings, implant characteristics and complications were collected. The analysis included 103 eyes of 101 patients age 27.8 ± 21.9 months undergoing enucleation for retinoblastoma. Postoperatively, 19/103 (18%) eyes developed exposure, extrusion, or hematoma requirin

BACKGROUND: Orbital compartment syndrome (OCS) is a rare but devastating complication following pterional craniotomy. Although the causes of OCS are unclear, external compression of the orbit by a myocutaneous flap is commonly mentioned as a major factor. We evaluated the ocular influence of external compression using an extraocular pressure monitor.
METHODS: We measured extraocular pressure in 86 patients who underwent surgery for cerebral aneurysm via a pterional approach. Clinical information and radiologic parameters, including the area of the medial rectus muscle (MRM) and the craniotomy

INTRODUCTION: Complication of an odontogenic infection to an orbital abscess is not a common presentation. The progression from a simple toothache to a condition that may lead to loss of vision is sudden and severe.
CASE REPORT: We report a rare case in which a patient developed facial cellulitis that progressed to orbital abscess after unsterile dental manipulation by a medical fraudster ("quack"). The patient was initiated on high-grade antibiotics, which resolved the facial cellulitis. However, the patient developed orbital abscess with restricted mobility of the right eye in the lateral g

UNLABELLED: Orbital apex syndrome (OAS) is an uncommon disorder characterized by visual loss, ophthalmoplegia, ptosis and hypoaesthesia of the forehead[1]. OAS may result from a variety of inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic and vascular conditions that cause damage to the superior orbital fissure (with resultant oculomotor (III), trochlear (IV), abducens (VI) and ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve (V1) palsies) and to the optic canal leading to optic nerve (II) dysfunction. This case report describes the clinical development of OAS in a patient with bacterial sphenoid sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Giant cell tumor of bone originating from the connective tissue within the bone marrow is benign but locally aggressive lesion. In all, 90% of the cases involve the epiphysis of long bones and less than 2% involve the skull. Giant cell tumors of the skull occur most frequently in the sphenoid and temporal bones, and very rarely in the ethmoid, frontal, parietal, and occipital bones. We would like to share a case of giant cell tumor of bone arising from the left orbital roof with involving ethmoid sinus, which was diagnosed to be a meningioma before surgery.

A 51-year-old female underwent four upper zygomatic dental implants (ZI) and one upper and four lower conventional implants. Immediately postoperatively, the patient had pain and diplopia upon manual elevation of the edematous eyelid. Panoramic x-ray showed a malpositioned right upper ZI, requiring removal of the right upper ZI the following day. The patient had delayed referral to ophthalmology one month later for persistent diplopia. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a right inferolateral fracture with fibrosis surrounding the inferior oblique muscle. Clini

The use of three-dimensional (3D) printing has been growing significantly in medicine for the past 10 years, especially in maxillofacial surgery. A lot a different softwares and printers are available on the market, and it can be difficult to choose which one fits best one's needs. In the authors' institution, the authors regularly print orbits to prepare the reconstruction. The authors then compared the 3D printing of an orbital fracture between a professional and nonprofessional software and between a bottom of the range and a more elaborated printer. The results show that there is a wide va

Surgical rehabilitation of orbital dystopia can be challenging. The authors demonstrate the effective use of spectacle lenses to visually correct misalignments of the globe and the orbit. Presented is a retrospective review of 4 patients undergoing aesthetic rehabilitation through use of spectacle lenses and in a number patients a cosmetic shell. Two patients with neurofibromatosis presented with inferior dystopia of the globe and orbit. A base-down prismatic lens applied to the spectacles in conjunction with a prosthetic shell successfully visually corrected the facial asymmetry and improved p

Bony malformations of the orbit and alterations to the soft tissue in Apert syndrome contribute to ophthalmic dysfunction. Recognised structural malformation of the sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses, together with corresponding deformities in the anterior and middle cranial base, are characteristic. Our aim was to explore the underlying structural components of disfigurement and the consequent development of the orbit in patients with Apert syndrome over time by studying 18 preoperative computed tomographic (CT) scans of affected patients and 36 scans from controls. Cephalometric measurements relat

Craniosynostosis is a premature pathologic fusion of one or more cranial vault sutures leading to abnormally-shaped skull. It can occur in isolated event (non-syndromic), or it can occur in conjunction with other anomalies in welldefined patterns (syndromic). The diagnosis rests on clinical examination and confirmation is generally on the computed tomography scan. The need for surgery is both for cosmetic and functional reasons. Here we describe a case of nonsyndromic craniosynostosis that was treated with frontal orbital advancement (FOA). The potential benefits of FOA need to be carefully we
