Interventions for treating oral mucositis for patients with cancer receiving treatment.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of cancer is increasingly effective but associated with short and long-term side effects. Oral side effects, including oral mucositis (ulceration), remain a major source of illness despite the use of a variety of agents to treat them. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of interventions for treating oral mucositis or its associated pain in patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. SEARCH STRATEGY: Computerised searches of Cochrane Oral Health Group Specialised Register, CCTR, MEDLINE and EMBASE were undertaken. Reference lists from relevant ar

Therapeutic ultrasound for postpartum perineal pain and dyspareunia.

BACKGROUND: Proponents of therapeutic ultrasound suggest it can decrease pain by resolution of inflammation processes and reducing the pressure on pain sensitive structures by haematoma and oedema. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to assess the effects of therapeutic ultrasound for treating acute perineal pain, persistent perineal pain and/or dyspareunia, following childbirth. SEARCH STRATEGY: The Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group trials register, Embase, Cinahl (to May 1996), Physiotherapy Index (1985 to May 1996) and World Congress of Physical Therapy 1994 Conference Proc

[Patellofemoral pain].

A variable combination of patellar lateral subluxation, patellofemoral dysplasia, patella alta and secondary chondromalacia is the major cause of patellofemoral pain. Specific pathology such as medial plica syndrome or patellar tendinitis are less frequent, but their treatment is easier. A strict radiological protocol most often demonstrates the abnormalities. A CT-scan combined with an arthrogram is another imaging option. The goal of conservative treatment is to bring pain relief. The surgical correction of patellar maltracking can be proposed if conservative treatment fails, but has a high

Patellofemoral pain and the infrapatellar brace. A military view.

Thirty-seven cases of patellofemoral pain in young, active military recruits were studied. All patients were provided with an infrapatellar brace as a method of treatment. Nine patients (24%) demonstrated some improvement in symptoms at 1 week following application. Eight patients (22%) with maximum relief at 1 week were also shown to be symptom free at 1 year. Twelve patients (32%) with poor results were arthroscoped; eleven of these (92%) were found to have chondromalacia of the patella. Our success rate for subjective symptoms, after using the infrapatellar brace in this study, does not com

Metatarsalgia: a clinical review of diagnosis and management.

Metatarsalgia is the symptom of pain in the region of the metatarsophalangeal articulations. In a careful analysis of 98 patients who presented with complaints of forefoot pain, 23 distinct diagnoses were made as to the etiology of their pain. These diagnoses were grouped under primary metatarsalgia, secondary metatarsalgia, and pain under the forefoot. Specialized tests, such as stance phase cholesterol-crystal force plate analysis and intraarticular or digital nerve block, are helpful in determining the diagnosis and the likelihood of effective treatment.

A quarter-century of pain science in Türkiye: Thematic, institutional, and gender trends in AĞRI (2000-2025).

BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate thematic, institutional, and gender-related changes of AĞRI, the official journal of the Turkish Society of Algology. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We processed all open-access manuscripts published from January 2000 through December 2025 using a custom Python pipeline for metadata, affiliations, and rule-based topic clustering. Gender was inferred from a Turkish name-gender dictionary with manual adjudication. We measured female workforce participation, female corresponding authorship rate, and the Glass Ceiling Gap (GCG; workforce mean minus corresponding-aut

Additional Effects of Manual Therapy to Exercise on Pain and Function in Individuals With Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to analyse the additional effects of manual therapy (MT) to exercise (EX) compared to EX alone on pain, function, and PPT in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS: Six databases (MEDLINE, PEDro, EMBASE, CENTRAL, CINAHL, and Web of Science) were searched from inception up to May 2026. Two independent reviewers selected randomized clinical trials. Standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated by random-effects for meta-analyses. The review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024525169), and the certainty

Precision Meets Pain Relief: Image-guided Nerve Blocks in Interventional Radiology.

Nerve blocks are a valuable opioid-sparing analgesic technique that play a critical role in multimodal pain management. As interventional radiology continues to expand its scope, proficiency in nerve block techniques has become increasingly relevant. Unlike general anesthesia, nerve blocks provide targeted pain relief, facilitating procedural success while minimizing systemic opioid use and associated complications as well as decreasing health care costs. The authors provide an in-depth discussion of nerve block mechanisms, indications, procedural techniques, imaging guidance, and safety consi…

[Research progress on mechanisms of acupuncture regulating limbic system to improve pain-related emotion].

Chronic pain is often accompanied by negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, and aversion, with structural and functional abnormalities in the limbic system serving as the key pathological basis for this comorbidity. Acupuncture can improve pain-related emotions by modulating multilevel neural centers within the limbic system. At the cortical level, acupuncture can restore the regulatory mechanism of the cortex over pain-related emotions by modulating the neural plasticity of the anterior cingulate cortex, medial cingulate cortex, prefrontal cortex, and insular cortex; at the subcortica

Erector Spinae Plane Block as an Analgesic Strategy for Hepatopancreaticobiliary Pain: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) pain is a common cause of emergency department (ED) and intensive care unit (ICU) presentation and is frequently managed with opioid analgesics. In the setting of the ongoing opioid crisis, effective non-opioid analgesic strategies are urgently needed. The erector spinae plane block (ESPB) has emerged as a promising regional anesthesia technique. OBJECTIVES: To systematically review and synthesize existing evidence on the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of ESPB for HPB-related pain in acute care settings. METHODS: A systematic review was cond

[Adjunctive agents for nerve blocks/local injections in the treatment of zoster-associated pain: A systematic review based on levels of evidence].

OBJECTIVES: Zoster-associated pain (ZAP) is an acute and chronic neuropathic pain condition caused by reactivation of varicella-zoster virus in sensory ganglia, which can severely impair patients' quality of life. Nerve block is one of the most commonly used interventional techniques in clinical practice and is often combined with various adjunctive agents to enhance therapeutic efficacy. However, these agents differ in mechanisms of action and levels of evidence, and due to differences in the pathological mechanisms at different stages of ZAP, there is currently a lack of systematic evaluatio

Global Consensus-Based Essential and Expanded Packages for Palliative Care and Pain Relief for Adults and Children: A Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: In 2018, the Lancet Commission on Global Access to Palliative Care and Pain Relief introduced the concept of serious health-related suffering (SHS) to quantify the need for palliative care and proposed an essential package of palliative care and pain relief (PCPR) to address it. However, this package did not account for complex and specialized needs, and its global implementation has been limited. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a multistage, modified Delphi study to update and expand the initial Essential Package for children and adults METHODS: Two international panels -adult and pedia

Therapeutic role of Differential Target Multiplexed (DTM) spinal cord stimulation in painful diabetic neuropathy. Case report.

Diabetic peripheral polyneuropathy (DPN) is the most common cause for diabetic foot complications, including diabetic ulcers, Charcot arthropathy, and lower limb amputations. Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) is a safe and effective treatment used for pain reduction in neuropathic/nociceptive pain conditions; the most common stimulation modalities used for the management of painful diabetic neuropathy were conventional paresthesia-based and high-frequency SCS, which stimulate the A beta fibers in the dorsal column of the spinal cord. Differential Target Multiplexed (DTM) SCS is a novel paresthesia
