This research aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pharmaceutical concentrations in surface water. The Warta River (western Poland) was studied at points upstream and downstream of the treated sewage outflow. Ten pharmaceuticals were analyzed in 12 sampling campaigns during the pandemic (February 2020 - April 2021), and 3 during the post-pandemic period (November 2024 - January 2025) to assess their long-term impact. The results revealed a significant increase in pharmaceutical concentrations near the outflow of treated sewage (range 1.53-20.47 µg/L), confirming that it is th

This study examines the impact of easing COVID-19 restrictions on heavy metal concentrations in paddy soil and rice in Mizoram, India (2021-2023). Concentrations of copper, manganese, zinc, iron, nickel, lead, arsenic, and cadmium were measured using ICP-MS. The Bioaccumulation Factor, Pollution Index, and Health Risk Index were calculated, which assessed metal uptake, pollution level, and health hazards, respectively. Post-pandemic, average heavy metal levels in soil increased significantly, likely due to resumed anthropogenic activities. Notably, nickel reached 0.94 mg/kg (N. Vanlaiphai), le

INTRODUCTION: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has caused a global crisis that has impacted not only health care systems, but also economies and societies. The constraints in clinical testing provide challenges in reliably assessing the prevalence of variations, particularly in regions with limited resources, testing, and sequencing capabilities. Sewage-based epidemiology uses SARS-CoV-2 in sewage as an indicator, can monitor and provide early warning of viral transmission in communities, thereby informing response strategies.
METHODS: In this study, sewage samples and clinical patient samples were co

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) significantly impacts children's health, but diagnosing OSA is challenging, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic with limited access to polysomnography (PSG). A recent study used 1-2-min sleep videos to assess OSA, developing the Monash score, which demonstrated 100 % sensitivity and 36 % specificity for moderate to severe OSA diagnosis with a score of 3 or higher.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that home video recordings using mobile technology could help clinicians identify children at risk of moderate to severe OSA.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and intensified structural inequities at the nexus of ageing, migration, and socioeconomic vulnerability. These overlapping disadvantages resulted in uneven health outcomes and highlighted systemic fragilities in health systems; yet, few policy reviews have integrated these demographic dimensions into a single analytical framework.
OBJECTIVES: This review critically examines how ageing, migration, and socioeconomic disparities intersect to shape health equity during and after the pandemic. It identifies structural bottlenecks, adaptive responses, and

This study investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Japanese workers, focusing on the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and different types of work (desk work, in-person work, physical labor, and unemployment), as well as various demographic factors. Using a web-based survey conducted in February 2021, we collected data from 19,941 workers aged 20-65 yr. The Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) was used to measure workers' fear, with analysis focusing on the total score and two subfactors: emotional fear reactions (Factor 1) and symptomatic expressions of fear (Factor 2). OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) presented considerable challenges to health services, particularly for a routine assessment method, the pulmonary function tests (PFTs), which can generate aerosols and require sharing common surfaces. Despite these risks, there is a need to continue testing, especially for vulnerable patient groups.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An online survey was conducted from June 1 to June 26, 2020, to assess pulmonologists’ practices regarding PFTs before and during the pandemic’s first peak in Türkiye (March 11-May 20, 2020). The survey included 30 anonymized qu

Resilience is a crucial ability of an economy to withstand sudden events and uncertain shocks. Using the entropy method, this study measures the economic resilience of 281 Chinese cities (prefecture-level and above) from 2017 to 2022, and empirically examines the impact of COVID-19 on this resilience, as well as its transmission channels. The results show that COVID-19 adversely affected overall urban economic resilience, with contrasting effects across its sub-dimensions: an insignificant negative impact on shock resistance, a significant negative impact on adaptive recovery, and an insignifi

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated widespread mask-wearing as a key preventive measure. While masks played a crucial role in limiting virus transmission, their implications for individuals living with chronic illnesses remain underexplored. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of patients with chronic conditions regarding mask-wearing during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on physical, psychological, and social aspects. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed to explore the lived experiences of individuals with chronic illnesses regarding mask-wearing du

COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has profoundly impacted global health since late 2019. Beyond respiratory complications, the disease involves systemic manifestations driven by immune dysregulation, inflammation, and coagulopathy. Among the many mechanisms implicated in severe disease, a growing body of evidence suggests a central role for the imbalance between proteases and antiproteases. This review examines how dysregulated protease activity contributes to viral entry, cytokine activation, vascular injury, and thrombosis. We focus on the integration of proteolytic systems such as the renin-a

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in single-target antiviral strategies, highlighting the urgent need for multi-mechanism therapeutic approaches against emerging viral threats. Here, we present an integrated computational framework systematically evaluating natural fatty acids as potential dual ACE2 (Angiotension Converting Enzyme 2)-inflammatory modulators; compounds simultaneously disrupting SARS-CoV-2 viral entry through allosteric ACE2 binding while suppressing host inflammatory cascades; through allosteric binding mechanisms rather than conventional competitive inhibi
