Higher socio-economic status of parents may increase risk for bipolar disorder in the offspring.

BACKGROUND: There are conflicting data regarding the socio-economic risk factors for bipolar disorders. The aim of the present study was to explore the association between the socio-economic status of an individual or the parent and the risk for bipolar disorder. METHOD: Two Danish registers were merged. From the data source, we extracted those born in 1960 or later, and those with a first-ever admission to, or contact with, Danish psychiatric facilities during 1981-1998 with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Fifty time-matched controls per case were chosen by the incidence-density sampling me

Further psychometric properties of the Tourette's Disorder Scale-Parent Rated version (TODS-PR).

This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Tourette's Disorder Scale-Parent Rated (TODS-PR), a 15-item parent-rated instrument that assesses a range of common symptoms seen in childhood Tourette's Disorder (TD) patients including tics, obsessions, compulsions, inattention, hyperactivity, aggression, and emotional disturbances. Participants were 67 children and adolescents ages 6-17 years who were diagnosed with TD and/or OCD and seen as a part of a larger study. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the original 4-factor structure of the TODS-PR with some slight re-specification

Effect of dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine, and placebo on nocturnal cough and sleep quality for coughing children and their parents.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the commonly used over-the-counter medications dextromethorphan and diphenhydramine are superior to placebo for the treatment of nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty associated with upper respiratory infections and to determine whether parents have improved sleep quality when their children receive the medications when compared with placebo. METHODS: Parents of 100 children with upper respiratory infections were questioned to assess the frequency, severity, and bothersome nature of the nocturnal cough. Their answers were recorded on 2 consecutive days, initial

Parents of children with chronic health problems: programs of nursing research and their relationship to developmental science.

This review identified nurse researchers and research teams that have current programs of research focused on parents and parenting of children with chronic health problems. Researchers were included if they had at least five publications since 1990, with at least three of these articles first-authored. These programs of research were critiqued from a developmental science perspective. Multiple methods were used for the search, including examination of previous review articles, hand search of journals, online computer searches, and review of the curriculum vitae of authors. Seven programs of r

Bulimic family dynamics: role of parents' personality--a controlled study with the Temperament and Character Inventory.

The numbers of studies on the familial environment and personality of bulimic women have increased in recent years and results have revealed interesting features. In this study, we evaluated the temperament and character traits of patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) and their mothers and fathers, and we analyzed the correlation of temperament and character traits among members of these bulimic families. Finally, we tested the ability of the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) to discriminate between normal controls and bulimic subjects, their parents, and their families. Using the TCI, te

Expressed emotion, family environment, and parental bonding in bulimia nervosa: a 6-year investigation.

As part of a prospective, long-term treatment study, 30 in-patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) were divided into groups with high and low expressed emotion (EE) family backgrounds according to the Camberwell Family Interview, and followed for a period of six years. The high EE group initially showed significantly more psychopathology than the low EE group. No group x time interactions were found, but the high EE group showed a worse outcome on the "conflict" and "organisation" subscales of the Family Environment Scale. They also showed significantly more eating disorder pathology according to t

Clinical importance of parent ratings of everyday cognitive abilities in children with learning and attention problems.

This study addressed two issues: first, whether parental reports contribute information over and above a standardized psychometric assessment, and second, whether parental reports of everyday cognitive functioning might be useful in distinguishing between children with reading disabilities (RD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and combined ADHD + RD. Parent-reported information on 159 children with learning or attention problems was obtained using a questionnaire called the Parent Ratings of Everyday Cognitive and Academic Abilities (PRECAA). Psychometric information used for

Parent and child reporting of negative life events: discrepancy and agreement across pediatric samples.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the consistency in child and parent reporting of child's negative life events across child/pediatric samples. METHODS: A total of 613 child-parent dyads provided independent reports of negative life events. The pairs included three groups consisting of children who were healthy (n = 362), diagnosed with cancer (n = 130), and diagnosed with a chronic illness (juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, or cystic fibrosis; n = 121). RESULTS: Children reported significantly more negative life events than their parents reported for them. Additionally, children in the chronical

Relative risk for genetic associations: the case-parent triad as a variant of case-cohort design.

The contribution of this paper is to conceptualize the case-parent triad within an epidemiological framework. We propose that the case-parent triad design is a variant of the case-cohort design. The affected offspring of case-parent triads come from a source cohort of all offspring of parents in a population. We first demonstrate that if the source cohort is restricted to offspring of a certain parental mating type then the relative risk in relation to genetic exposure can be estimated simply from the ratio of the number of exposed to the number of unexposed affected offspring. We then extend

Parental substance use disorder and the risk of adolescent drug abuse: an event history analysis.

A common observation in the research literature is that children of drug-dependent parents are at significantly heightened risk of adolescent drug use, abuse, and dependence. Recent research indicates that several psychological and interpersonal factors may affect the association between parents' psychoactive substance use disorder (PSUD) and drug use risks among adolescents, yet studies have failed to examine explicitly whether these factors moderate the association between PSUD and adolescent substance abuse. This paper explores these potential relationships using longitudinal data from a st

Expectant parents' representations of early attachment relationships: associations with mental health and family history.

The association between adult representations of early attachment relationships and history of individual and family mental health was examined in a sample of 233 expectant mothers and fathers. As predicted, security of attachment was linked to mental health. Parents classified as Preoccupied were more likely than other parents to report suicidal ideation. Whereas parents classified as Unresolved more often reported suicidal ideation, emotional distress, and substance abuse. With respect to family history. Unresolved and Preoccupied attachment classifications were significantly related to chil

Child, parent, and peer predictors of early-onset substance use: a multisite longitudinal study.

The purpose of this study was to identify kindergarten-age predictors of early-onset substance use from demographic, environmental, parenting, child psychological, behavioral, and social functioning domains. Data from a longitudinal study of 295 children were gathered using multiple-assessment methods and multiple informants in kindergarten and 1st grade. Annual assessments at ages 10, 11, and 12 reflected that 21% of children reported having initiated substance use by age 12. Results from longitudinal logistic regression models indicated that risk factors at kindergarten include being male, h

Needs assessment in a spina bifida program: a comparison of the perceptions by adolescents with spina bifida and their parents.

The primary purpose of this study was to describe and compare medical, psychosocial, and economic needs of adolescents and young adults with a neural tube defect and their parents. A secondary aim of the study was to establish the psychometric properties of a previously published needs assessment tool. Forty-nine adolescent and 59 parents receiving services from a comprehensive spina bifida program at a large children's hospital completed a needs assessment survey designed to measure perceived needs for health and social services. The Needs Assessment Questionnaire includes 8 subscales (Access

Type D retrovirus specific sequences in lymphocytes of the children with Burkitt-type lymphoma and their parents.

Type D retroviruses cause immunodeficiency in monkey. Earlier we have revealed genetical and serological markers of type D retroviruses in children with Burkitt-type lymphoma. Using PCR/Southern blotting assay we have found sequences related to MPMV in PBMC's DNA from children with Burkitt-type lymphoma and from their parents. Moreover, the data on sequencing of virus specific sequences from one ill child and from his mother have been presented.

Treating food refusal in a child with Williams syndrome using the parent as therapist in the home setting.

The present authors examined the effectiveness of a behavioural intervention which included escape extinction and differential reinforcement of each bite eaten to treat non-organic food refusal in a child with Williams syndrome. The intervention was implemented by the child's mother in the home during normal meal schedules. The child was not allowed to leave the meal situation for a predetermined time period and was praised by the mother for each bite consumed. The intervention was evaluated using a multiple baseline design across meals (i.e. breakfast and lunch). The results demonstrate an in
