Air pollution and long COVID: association with pulmonary function and radiological abnormalities 3-15 months post-COVID.

While studies have examined associations between air pollution and subjective long COVID outcomes such as fatigue and symptoms, no studies have focused on objective lung health measures. This study aimed to assess the impact of air pollution, examined through different exposure methods (exposures assigned via geospatial model, versus residential and personal measurements) on pulmonary function and radiological abnormalities in long COVID patients. We recruited 95 patients who attended a hospital outpatient clinic 3-6 months post-infection, during which pulmonary function was assessed via spiro

Differentiating the in vitro toxicity of solid-surface composite dust: A comparison of material components and abrasive particles.

BACKGROUND: Workers fabricating solid-surface composite (SSC) materials like Corian® are exposed to airborne particulate matter (PM) containing aluminum trihydrate (ATH) and potentially abrasive particles from sanding tools, leading to concerns about respiratory health effects like pulmonary fibrosis. However, the relative toxicological contributions of the SSC material versus the sandpaper abrasives remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the in vitro cellular responses induced by respirable dust generated from sanding SSC with different commercial sandpapers (aluminum oxide […

Exploring the impact of ambient air PM2.5 on multiple sclerosis: an experimental dive into neuroinflammation.

There is mounting evidence about the connection between particulate matter (PM) and neuroinflammation. This study aimed to evaluate the toxicological effects of PM2.5 associated with inflammatory factors in a mouse's multiple sclerosis (MS) model. Thirty C57BL/6 male mice were categorized into five groups: a group of healthy mice, a control cuprizone-induced MS group, and three MS-induced groups, intranasally exposed to three concentrations of ambient air PM2.5 (5, 10, and 20 mg/mL) from Tehran in a phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution. All mice were investigated by motor function, molecul…

Early life air pollution exposures and thyroid function in children: A prospective cohort study.

Studies on early life ambient air pollution exposures and childhood thyroid function are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between early life fine particulate matter (≤2.5 μm; PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposures and thyroid function in children. We measured the levels of thyrotropin, triiodothyronine, and free thyroxine in children (n = 684) residing in a rural Korean area at age 2, 4, 6, or 8 years from 2012 to 2020 in the Environment and Development of Children cohort. The relationship between residential average exposure levels of PM2.5 and NO2 during pregnancy …

The associations between exposure to ambient air pollution and coagulation markers and the potential effects of DNA methylation.

Previous studies have illustrated the pivotal role of coagulation biomarkers in the link between air pollution and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, inconsistencies remain in the conclusions, with limited studies conducted in rural areas of China. We conducted a panel study in rural areas of Henan Province, China. Considering the potential effect modifications of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risks, 104 participants were enrolled, comprising two matched groups: 52 with high ASCVD risks and 52 with low ASCVD risks. DNA methylation at CpG sites and coagulation indices were

PM2.5 exposure promotes the progression of acute kidney injury by activating NLRP3-mediated macrophage inflammatory response.

AIM: We reveal the mechanism of action whereby ambient PM2.5 promotes kidney injury. METHODS: Using C57BL/6 mice, the effects of PM2.5 exposure on the acute kidney injury (AKI) were investigated, including renal function changes, expression of inflammatory cytokines, histopathological changes, as well as activation of nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain, leucine-rich repeat and pyrin domain-containing 3(NLRP3). The effects of PM2.5 on renal injury after NLRP3 inhibition were explored using NLRP3 inhibitor (MCC950) and NLRP3 knockout mice. The effects of PM2.5 on the inflammatory respons

Life-course exposure to air pollution and biological ageing in the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution is associated with a range of diseases. Biomarkers derived from DNA methylation (DNAm) offer potential mechanistic insights into human health differences, connecting disease pathogenesis and biological ageing. However, little is known about sensitive periods during the life course where air pollution might have a stronger impact on DNAm, or whether effects accumulate over time. We examined associations between air pollution exposure across the life course and DNAm-based markers of biological ageing. METHODS: Data were derived from the Scotland-based Lothi
