During the seven years from January 1989 to December 1995, we investigated 2,269 Chinese infants and young children for metabolic disorders in Hong Kong. These young patients, all aged under 4 years and originated from southern China, were ill with no apparent cause and had clinical manifestations suggestive of inherited metabolic diseases. Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) arising in the foot are rare in children. From 1975 to 1994, 18 children (median age, 13.5 years) were treated at St Jude Children's Research Hospital for STS of the foot. Five children had rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), with alveolar histology in four cases. All of these patients presented with metastatic disease, which proved fatal within 9 to 24 months despite combined modality treatment with chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Thirteen patients had nonrhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcoma (NRSTS). The most common histological variant was synovial sarcoma (7 patients).

A more precise determination of the date of primary rubella infection in pregnancy is obtained by application of the urea denaturation method. Two denaturation buffers containing 6 and 8 M urea were compared for the detection of rubella IgG avidity by enzyme immunoassay. YAG-Nd impulse-periodic laser scalpel in elimination of major duodenal papilla stenosis was tested experimentally. The direct damaging influence of the laser was tested in acute experiments and the optimal power of irradiation (5 W) was chosen. The processes of regeneration of the wound inflicted by laser irradiation were tested in chronic experiments. It is shown, that regeneration was accompanied with minimal leucocyte infiltration and complete healing of the wound is achieved in 28 days.

The employees with hypertension at the annual periodic health examination (HE) for employees in Japan usually receive a re-examination of blood pressure (BP) on another day and are often found to be normotensive. In this study, we analyzed data from the HE at the workplace to determine whether or not such employees should receive medical care. Two groups of subjects were selected. One group (group 1) was composed of 50 subjects with normotension at the HE (controls). Another group (group 2) was composed of 33 subjects with hypertension at the annual HE but with normotension in re-examinations.
