Development of an Electrochemical Ceramic Membrane Filtration System for Efficient Contaminant Removal from Waters.

Inability to remove low-molecular-weight anthropogenic contaminants is a critical issue in low-pressure membrane filtration processes for water treatment. In this work, a novel electrochemical ceramic membrane filtration (ECMF) system using TiO2@SnO2-Sb anode was developed for removing persistent p-chloroaniline (PCA). Results showed that the ECMF system achieved efficient removal of PCA from contaminated waters. At a charging voltage of 3 V, the PCA removal rate of TiO2@SnO2-Sb ECMF system under flow-through mode was 2.4 times that of flow-by mode. The energy consumption for 50% of PCA remova

Degradation of ciprofloxacin using Fenton's oxidation: Effect of operating parameters, identification of oxidized by-products and toxicity assessment.

Ciprofloxacin (CPX), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, is found in the bulk effluents emerged from pharmaceutical industries. Its presence in the effluent may lead to toxicity to the aquatic life and antimicrobial resistance. Hence, the oxidative degradation of CPX by classical Fenton's process was investigated for the present study. The maximum CPX and total organic carbon (TOC) removal from the synthetic wastewater (initial CPX concentration = 100 mg L-1) were 70% and 55%, respectively, under the best reaction conditions ([H2O2]:[Fe2+] = 10, stoichiometric H2O2 concentration = 14.2 mM and initia

Effectiveness and intermediates of microcystin-LR degradation by UV/H2O2 via 265 nm ultraviolet light-emitting diodes.

Although the degradation of cyanotoxins by 254 nm UV/H2O2 has been well elucidated, the efficiency and mechanism involved are not necessarily true for other UV wavelengths. The degradation of microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a representative cyanotoxin, was explored by UV/H2O2 using 265 nm ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED). The results indicated that 265 nm UV/H2O2 treatment had a high removal efficiency of MC-LR ([MC-LR] = 0.1 μM, apparent rate constants reached 0.2077 min-1, half-time at 3.3 min). The qualitative analyses demonstrated that three novel intermediates, C48H74N10O15 (molecular we

Novel Process of Simultaneous Removal of Nitric Oxide and Sulfur Dioxide Using a Vacuum Ultraviolet (VUV)-Activated O2/H2O/H2O2 System in A Wet VUV-Spraying Reactor.

A novel process for NO and SO2 simultaneous removal using a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV, with 185 nm wavelength)-activated O2/H2O/H2O2 system in a wet VUV-spraying reactor was developed. The influence of different process variables on NO and SO2 removal was evaluated. Active species (O3 and ·OH) and liquid products (SO32-, NO2-, SO42-, and NO3-) were analyzed. The chemistry and routes of NO and SO2 removal were investigated. The oxidation removal system exhibits excellent simultaneous removal capacity for NO and SO2, and a maximum removal of 96.8% for NO and complete SO2 removal were obtained unde

Fast ligand substitution at a chromium(III) hydroperoxo complex.

The hydroperoxo group in (H(2)O)(5)CrOOH(2+) is replaced with selected anions (acetate, nitrate, and sulfate) at rates that are unprecedented for substitution at a pentaaquachromium(III) complex. The chemistry is noteworthy in that it interchanges low-concentration, weak ligands between a Cr(III) coordination sphere and solution in the presence of a large excess of water. We attribute this chemistry and the fast kinetics to the hydroperoxo cis effect. Each of the entering anions follows a different rate law in support of H(+)-assisted dissociation of the hydroperoxo group from a mixed-ligand i

Cobalt-mediated activation of peroxymonosulfate and sulfate radical attack on phenolic compounds. implications of chloride ions.

The sulfate radical pathway of the room-temperature degradation of two phenolic compounds in water is reported in this study. The sulfate radicals were produced by the cobalt-mediated decomposition of peroxymonosulfate (Oxone) in an aqueous homogeneous system. The major intermediates formed from the transformation of 2,4-dichlorophenol were 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzenediol, 1,1,3,3-tetrachloroacetone, pentachloroacetone, and carbon tetrachloride. Those resulting from the transformation of phenol in the presence of chloride ion were 2-chlorophenol, 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-

A critical appraisal of vitiligo etiologic theories. Is melanocyte loss a melanocytorrhagy?

The aim of the present thesis was to investigate the pathophysiology of chronic tension-type headache with special reference to central mechanisms. Increased tenderness to palpation of pericranial myofascial tissues is the most apparent abnormality in patients with tension-type headache. A new piece of equipment, a so-called palpometer, that makes it possible to control the pressure intensity exerted during palpation, was developed. Thereafter, it was demonstrated that the measurement of tenderness could be compared between two observers if the palpation pressure was controlled, and that the T

The reaction of cyanide with peroxidatic forms of cytochrome oxidase.

The interaction of peroxidatic derivatives of cytochrome c oxidase with cyanide has been investigated by optical spectroscopy and the stopped-flow method. Two reactions were found in the conversion of peroxy cytochrome oxidase to its cyanide complex. The first reaction is characterized by the loss of the 607 nm band, an increase in absorbance at 655 nm, and a decrease in absorbance at 432 nm resulting from a blue-shift of the Soret band; this reaction occurred with a bimolecular rate constant of about 90 M-1 s-1. The second reaction is observed as an absorbance increase at 585 and 432 nm; the

Chemical modification of enzymes with activated magnetic modifier.

An activated magnetic modifier, which could render biological materials magnetic property, was synthesized in following two steps: oxidation of ferrous ions (Fe2+) with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of alpha, omega-dicarboxymethylpoly(oxyethylene) (DCPEG) to obtain DCPEG-magnetite (Fe3O4); free carboxyl groups in the DCPEG-magnetite were activated with N-hydroxysuccinimide. By coupling the activated magnetic modifier to amino groups of lipase or L-asparaginase, magnetic enzymes were prepared. They dispersed stably not only in aqueous solution but also in organic solvents with high enzymic

Astragaloside IV and Ferroptosis Modulation in Pathological Cardiac Hypertrophy: Current Evidence, an Integrative Hypothesis, and Future Directions.

Pathological cardiac hypertrophy is initially an adaptive response to sustained mechanical, neurohormonal, or metabolic stress; however, it can progress to fibrosis, contractile dysfunction, arrhythmia, and heart failure. Ferroptosis is a type of regulated cell death caused by iron-dependent phospholipid peroxidation. Evidence consistent with ferroptosis, such as disrupted iron homeostasis, lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired antioxidant defense, has been reported in experimental models of pathological cardiac hypertrophy; however, these findings do not by themselves est

TOPAS-nBio simulation of the impact of ultrahigh dose rate and oxygen concentration on the Fenton reaction using the Fricke solution.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical studies have shown that FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT), delivering radiation in ultrahigh dose rates (UHDR), presents reduced healthy tissue toxicity, while maintaining an iso-effective tumor response compared to conventional radiotherapy (CONV-RT). This combined biological benefit was termed as "FLASH effect." The mechanisms responsible for this effect remain unclear, however, it has been hypothesized that the Fenton reaction which produces • OH can inflict substantial damage to biomolecules and thus might play a role in the "FLASH effect." PURPOSE: We propose to

H₂O₂-induced green synthesis of EGCG-flavonoid carrier-free nanoparticles:The role of hydroxyl group number governing formation and function.

This study developed a green, carrier-free EGCG-flavonoid nanoparticle assembly strategy driven by H₂O₂. This approach overcomes the drawbacks of traditional formaldehyde-induced methods, including solvent toxicity and poor biocompatibility. It further investigated how the number of flavonoid hydroxyl groups regulates the assembly process and properties of EGCG-flavonoid nanoparticles. The formation involves H₂O₂-mediated oxidation of EGCG hydroxyl groups to generate aldehyde and carboxyl groups, which then undergo covalent bonding with the amino group of glycine. Flavonoids are embedded into

Multi-active sites of Co/N-biochar created by ball-milling for peroxymonosulfate-activated degradation of diclofenac.

A cobalt-nitrogen co-doped biochar catalyst (Co/N-BC-300) was synthesized from spent coffee grounds via urea-assisted ball milling and low-temperature pyrolysis for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in diclofenac (DCF) degradation. Ball milling successfully disperses cobalt precursors, increases surface defects, and enhances nitrogen doping. These structural improvements expose active sites, thereby accelerating PMS activation and electron transfer. The optimized catalyst achieves complete DCF removal within 7 min under mild conditions. Construction of an EDTA-assisted biochar-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron catalyst from betel nut shell and blast furnace dust for enhanced H2O2 generation and Fenton-like degradation of 4-fluorophenol.

4-Fluorophenol (4-FP), as a typical fluorinated pharmaceutical intermediate, is difficult to be removed by conventional biological treatments due to its environmental persistence and biological toxicity. In addition, the reprocessing of blast furnace dust (BFD), a by-product of the steel production process, remains an important industrial challenge. To address the challenges of remediation of difficult-to-degrade fluorinated pollutants and resource utilization of industrial wastes, a green catalytic system based on synergistic utilization of industrial wastes and waste biomass was developed in

Exercise and Ferroptosis in Neurodegenerative Diseases: Direct Evidence, Mechanistic Links, and Translational Gaps.

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death characterized by iron dyshomeostasis, glutathione depletion, glutathione peroxidase 4 dysfunction, and excessive lipid peroxidation. Exercise is a safe and accessible non-pharmacological intervention with broad neuroprotective potential, but the evidentiary basis linking exercise specifically to ferroptosis is uneven. Only a limited subset of studies directly combines an exercise intervention with ferroptosis-related outcomes in neurodegenerative models; much of the proposed pathway architecture is inferred from pharmacological, cel

Ferroptosis in Ischemic Stroke: Insights from Natural Product Treatment and Future Directions.

Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent, lipid peroxidation-driven form of regulated cell death, critically contributes to ischemic stroke (IS) pathophysiology through iron overload, glutathione depletion, and dysregulation of the System Xc-/GPX4 axis. This review systematically evaluates natural product-derived interventions targeting ferroptosis for IS management. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect from their inception through May 22, 2026 identified 74 eligible studies. Our synthesis reveals three core mechanistic hubs: (1) restoring iron homeostasis by regulating ferri
