Childhood Traumatic Experiences and ICD-11 Model of Personality Disorders: a Study Among Croatian Psychiatric Patients.

Childhood traumatic experiences have been implicated in the development of personality disorders (PDs), but research within the recent ICD-11 PD framework is still lacking. We aimed to explore the effects of various types of early trauma on the ICD-11 PD severity and maladaptive personality domains. In this cross-sectional study, 398 adult psychiatric patients (57% females; 32% PD) filled out the following self-report instruments: the ICD-11 Personality Disorder Severity Scale, the Personality Assessment Questionnaire for ICD-11, and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form. PD patients…

Relationships among highly sensitive personality (HSP), neuroticism, mental health, neurodevelopmental traits, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).

AIM: Awareness of mental health is important to reduce stigma and discrimination and increase access to care. From the viewpoint of mental health conditions, this study examined the relationships among highly sensitive personality (HSP) traits and neuroticism in the general population. METHODS: After obtaining informed consents, an anonymous web-based survey for adult participants with equal data collection across genders and age groups (20s, 30s, and 40s) was conducted using self-report questionnaires about HSP, neuroticism, mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, autism spec…

Analysis of brain volumetry and functional connectivity during resting state in patients with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) involves affective instability, impaired emotion regulation, and self-injurious behavior, often linked to childhood adversity. Although prefrontal and insular abnormalities have been reported, the relationship between structural and functional changes in BPD is not well characterized. METHODS: We combined voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging in female patients with BPD (VBM n = 48; rs-fMRI n = 41) and female healthy controls (VBM n = 54; rs-fMRI n = 51). Regions with gray matter differences in t…

Examining the association between the dark triad personality traits and cardiovascular reactivity to acute psychological stress.

The current study aimed to examine the influence of Dark Triad traits on psychological and cardiovascular reactivity to acute psychological stress. Participants (N = 139, 52.5% women) completed a repeated measures cardiovascular reactivity protocol consisting of a resting baseline phase and a psychological stressor phase comprised of a mental arithmetic task with social evaluation. Self-reported stress and anxiety expectations were assessed prior to the stressor, while subjective stress and anxiety experiences were assessed following the task. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pre

Exploring Reasoning Biases Associated With Psychosis in Borderline Personality Disorder Using Self-Report and Objective Measures.

Jumping to Conclusions (JTC) and Bias Against Disconfirmatory Evidence (BADE) are interrelated cognitive biases implicated in psychosis. Individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) may experience psychotic symptoms, raising the question of whether they also exhibit these biases. However, research investigating the presence of these biases in individuals with BPD remains limited. Existing studies are marked by significant methodological shortcomings, including overreliance on self-report measures and the lack of clinical comparison groups. The present study examined JTC and…

Prediction of remission of major depressive disorder from the alternative DSM-5 model of personality disorders.

BACKGROUND: The Alternative DSM-5 Model of Personality Disorder (AMPD) is useful in defining and measuring personality pathology comorbid with depression, including impaired personality functioning and maladaptive traits. The present study tested AMPD dimensions' prospective prediction of remission of major depressive disorder (MDD), and dysphoria and low well-being (anhedonia) symptom levels. METHOD: Adults with MDD (N = 179; including mental-health outpatients and non-patients at risk for personality pathology) completed self-report measures of personality functioning (self and interpersona…

Roles Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Early Maladaptive Schemas In Antisocial Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is characterized by a pattern of negligence towards social norms, illicit and aggressive conduct, and lack of remorse. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and subsequent development of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) play a significant role in psychopathology vulnerability, including personality disorders. However, the evidence on the link between cognitive and environmental vulnerability in ASPD specifically is still limited. The aim of the present review is to analyze and discuss the available literature exploring the role of specific ACEs a…

[Borderline personality disorder features and quality of life in young people: the role of social support].

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults with borderline personality disorder (BPD) features, often experience reduced quality of life. Whereas for many young people, friendships are usually supportive, friendships in young people with BPD features can be intense and challenging. Little is known about how support from a best friend might moderate the association between BPD features and quality of life, specifically during a developmental phase when forming friendships is an important developmental task. AIM: To examine the association between BPD features and quality of life in young people …

Supplementary Motor Area Meningioma and Postoperative Hemorrhage Presenting With Acquired Narcissistic Personality Traits: A Case Report.

Meningiomas involving the supplementary motor area (SMA) are known to cause motor deficits, but acquired narcissistic personality changes following such lesions rarely described. We report a rare case of a 63-year-old woman who developed acquired narcissistic personality traits following the resection of a right frontal parasagittal meningioma involving the SMA, complicated by postoperative hemorrhage. Although previously cooperative, she manifested transient grandiosity, entitlement, and lack of empathy, temporarily meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 criteria. Her…

Characterizing brain structural and functional abnormalities in borderline personality disorder by seed-based d mapping approach.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental disorder characterized by extreme instability in mood, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavioral patterns. Its core symptoms include intense mood swings, strained interpersonal relationships, disturbed self-identity, impulsive behaviors, and cognitive and perceptual abnormalities. The etiology of BPD is complex, involving genetic, neurobiological, and psychosocial factors. Among neurobiological factors, neuroimaging studies have consistently reported inconsistent findings regarding amygdala volume in BPD patients-some MRI studies …

The Role of Social Adversity in the Association Between Autistic Traits and Borderline Personality Disorder Symptoms.

Autism and personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder (BPD), demonstrate high levels of co-occurrence. Autistic individuals are more likely to experience social adversity and exhibit heightened reactivity to stressors, while social adversity is a well-established precursor to BPD. The current study investigated the role of social adversity in the association between autistic traits and BPD symptoms, and the moderating role of autistic traits in the association between social adversity and BPD symptoms. Data of 7403 individuals from the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Sur…

Relationship Between Personality Style and Diagnostic Characteristics With Therapeutic Process Variables of Adults With Eating Disorders.

The prevalence and severity of eating disorders (EDs) have been increasing globally, and better understanding the role of different personality styles that occur in adults with EDs may optimize diagnosis and treatment. This study therefore aimed to investigate the relationship between personality styles, diagnostic characteristics, therapeutic techniques and therapeutic alliance in the treatment of adults with EDs. It is the first known study to directly explore personality styles and therapeutic alliance specifically with an ED sample. Data was collected via an online survey from 126 licenced…

ADCY2 promoter hypomethylation in adolescents with borderline personality disorder: An RRBS study with targeted BSP replication.

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and interpersonal instability. Although genetic and environmental contributions to BPD have been investigated, epigenetic correlates in adolescents remain poorly understood. The cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling pathway is implicated in stress responsivity and emotion regulation, but its epigenetic variation in adolescent BPD remains understudied. METHODS: DNA methylation profiling was performed using Reduced Representation Bisulfite Sequencing (RRBS) in buccal epithelial …

Disruption of Epistemic Trust in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Possible Adaptation to Avoid Making Costly Mistakes.

This paper applies error management theory (EMT) (Haselton and Buss 2000) to explore how disruptions in epistemic trust-trust in communicated information-can be understood as adaptive responses to early adversity in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). I propose that epistemic mistrust (EM) and epistemic credulity (EC), characterized by inappropriate trust patterns, arise from the differential costs of trusting unreliable versus mistrusting reliable information. Although these biases may seem maladaptive, they function as evolutionary survival mechanisms in response to harsh…

Social cognition impairment associated to a borderline personality disorder subtype linked to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Social cognition (SC) impairment in patients with BPD could be increased by comorbidity with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Comorbidity in neurodevelopmental disorders and its influence on SC impairments could result in greater severity, worse response to treatment and worse evolution of the disorder. The aim of this work is to study SC deficits, through Theory of Mind (ToM) errors associated with BPD linked to ADHD. METHODS: 87 BPD patients with and without ADHD associated were assessed with the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC). Statistical
