A rapid, selective and sensitive method for the determination of the angiotensin II receptor antagonist, telmisartan, in human plasma has been developed. Telmisartan and the internal standard, diphenhydramine, were extracted from plasma using diethyl ether-dichloromethane (60:40, v/v), and separated on a Zorbax extend C(18) column using methanol-10mM ammonium acetate (85:15, v/v) adjusted to pH 4.5 after mixing with formic acid as mobile phase. A novel method is proposed for the solvent extraction of palladium. A superamolecular compound, hexaacetato calix(6)arene in low concentration in toluene quantitatively extracts microgram concentration of palladium at pH 7.5. It can be stripped from the organic phase with 2 M nitric acid and determined spectrophotometrically as its stannous chloride complex at 635 nm. Thirty-three evaluable patients who had epithelial ovarian cancer that had not responded to treatment were entered into a phase II study of combination epirubicin and mitomycin C. Epirubicin (65 mg/m2) and mitomycin C (4 mg/m2) were administered separately, each as an i.v. bolus every 4 weeks. Ten patients (30%) had a complete or partial responses.
