Analysing the development of road safety using demographic data.

The purpose of this paper is to show that time series analyses of road safety and risk can be improved by using demographic data. We demonstrate that the distance travelled by drivers or riders of a certain age reflects the fluctuations over the years of the number of people of that age within the population. We further demonstrate that the change over time of per capita distance travelled, i.e. distance travelled per person, is often less subject to stochastic fluctuations, and therefore more smooth than the total distance travelled for drivers of that age. This smoothness is used to obtain f

Dispersion of red sunflower seed weevil damage in commercial sunflower fields.

The red sunflower seed weevil (RSSW), Smicronyx fulvus LeConte, is a key pest of cultivated sunflower in the Northern Great Plains. Larval feeding on the achenes can cause a significant reduction in final oil yield and test weight. A previous study has shown that RSSW feeding damage significantly decreases with increasing distance from the field edge; however, that study was conducted in situations where RSSW population densities were relatively low. Recently RSSW populations have been 10 to 200 times the threshold (4 to 12 RSSW head-1) in South Dakota. Thus, mature sunflower heads were taken

Factors beyond anthropogenic climate change affecting airborne pollen levels in urban areas.

Climate change is increasing airborne pollen concentrations, exposing populations to unprecedented allergenic levels and intensifying respiratory diseases. However, these changes are not exclusively climate-driven, particularly in urban environments where the structure, distribution, abundance and management of the vegetation is conditioned by human activity. This study provides an analysis of the temporal trends of airborne pollen levels from anthropically managed tree species in centres of high population density such as the metropolitan area of the Madrid Region (central Spain), one of the

Segregate, Test, Observe and Persevere (STOP): strengthening ex situ breeding programs for biodiversity in zoos amid highly pathogenic avian influenza threats - a case approach.

Zoos with avian populations are vulnerable to incursions of the high pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV) H5Nx due to the free-range husbandry, bird population density and shared open water areas between zoo birds and wild waterfowl. An outbreak of HPAIV H5N1, clade 2.3.4.4b, genotype EA AB, at the Zoological Garden Karlsruhe, Germany, in 2022, was managed applying legal restriction measures but exceptionally exempting culling orders for RT-qPCR-positive but clinically healthy birds. A critical factor in the zoo's response was the implementation of a segregation concept approved in adva

Breakdown of classical paradigms in lipid membranes. Part II: The permeability paradox.

Water soluble non electrolytes alter the density and the compressibility of the lipid membrane according to its ability to permeate. Glucose, a non-permeant, accumulates at the interphase binding to the PO2- groups promoting water extrusion and decreasing the specific volume and the compressibility without altering the vesicle size. Permeant as glycerol produces a lower change in agreement with its partial permeation. This behavior suggests a reduction in interfacial free volume and a restriction of area fluctuations while the membrane remains in the liquid-crystalline phase correlated with th

Principles of resident tissue macrophages revealed by the eye.

Macrophages are no longer viewed as transient immune passersby but as integral tissue components that regulate physiological homeostasis. Many resident macrophage populations are seeded prenatally and maintained locally, whereas others are progressively replaced by monocytes, yet the rules governing this divergence remain unclear. The eye provides a natural experiment because anatomically distinct compartments harbor macrophages that perform essential functions but differ sharply in persistence under shared systemic conditions. We synthesize evidence that ocular macrophages regulate matrix hom

Factors affecting in vitro oocyte maturation in Southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum).

BACKGROUND: Population numbers of free-roaming rhinoceros are dwindling while natural breeding in captive populations is challenged by sub-optimal fertility. When natural breeding programmes fail and population numbers continue to decline, the use of assisted reproduction technologies (ART) as a conservation tool to save wildlife species from extinction is imperative. Assisted breeding programmes in rhinoceros are challenging and attempts to develop species-specific ART beyond artificial insemination have been limited. This study evaluates various ex- and in-situ factors that could potentially

Children as controls in research; The voice of the volunteer.

BACKGROUND: Modern paediatric healthcare is increasingly dependent on diagnostic methods such as imaging and blood samples. These methods require knowledge of physiology and anatomy to separate signs of early disease development from physiological variants. To acquire this knowledge, researchers depend on studies on children from the general populations, but little is known about how children and their guardians experience participation in studies. This study aims to map the experiences of children participating in research. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From a cohort of children and guardians from

Data on four species of Longidorus Micoletzky, 1922 (Nematoda: Longidoridae) from southern and southeastern Iran, including description of a new species.

Four species of the genus Longidorus were recovered from southern (Bushehr province) and southeastern (Southern Khorasan province) Iran. The first species, L. paratabrizicus n. sp. represents a new member to the genus and is characterised by 4.8-5.6 mm long females with anteriorly flattened lip region separated from the rest of the body by depression, amphidial fovea pocket-shaped without lobes, tail conical, dorsally convex, ventrally almost straight with bluntly rounded tip and males in population. By having similar lip region and tail shape, the new species most closely resembles five speci

Proposing new lipoprotein (a) cut off value for Kazakhstan: pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: There is no consensus on the optimal concentration of lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) for the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) and aortic valve stenosis. In various clinical guidelines and agreed documents, the threshold level of Lp (a) is 30 mg/dl or 50 mg/dl. We estimated the cut-off value of Lp (a) associated with the risk of developing various localizations of atherosclerosis for the Central Asia, including Kazakhstani population. METHODS: This study was conducted at National Research Cardiac Surgery Center, Kazakhstan. 487 patients were included, of which 61.3

The association between appendicular skeletal muscle index and bone mineral density in children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease: A cross-sectional study.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD), a pervasive public health concern, can lead to complications like sarcopenia and reduced bone mineral density (BMD). However, it is still unclear exactly how muscle mass correlates with BMD in youngsters and adolescents with CKD. We aimed to investigate the association between appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) and BMD among children and adolescents with CKD. In our research, we utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 2011 and 2014 to investigate the association of ASMI with BMD among this populatio

Phenotypic Variations of Aedes aegypti Populations and Egg Abundance According to Environmental Parameters in Two Dengue-Endemic Ecoregions in Paraguay.

Dengue in Paraguay is an endemic disease of public health importance. Several studies suggest that an increased density of Aedes aegypti and the presence of dengue cases may be associated with climatic conditions. This study aimed to establish the phenotypic variations of Ae. aegypti from four cities (Asunción, Itauguá, Minga Guazú, and Ciudad del Este) and the potential association of environmental variables with the number of eggs in capture sites. Eleven morphometric phenotypic characters were evaluated, and environmental data were obtained from Earth Engine and local meteorological station

The effects of geographical distributions of buildings and roads on the spatiotemporal spread of canine rabies: An individual-based modeling study.

Rabies is a fatal disease that has been a serious health concern, especially in developing countries. Although rabies is preventable by vaccination, the spread still occurs sporadically in many countries, including Thailand. Geographical structures, habitats, and behaviors of host populations are essential factors that may result in an enormous impact on the mechanism of propagation and persistence of the disease. To investigate the role of geographical structures on the transmission dynamics of canine rabies, we developed a stochastic individual-based model that integrates the exact configura

Pharmacogenomics of statins: lipid response and other outcomes in Brazilian cohorts.

Statins are inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase, a key enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis, that are highly effective in reducing plasma low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and decreasing the risk of cardiovascular events. In recent years, a multitude of variants in genes involved in pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) have been suggested to influence the cholesterol-lowering response. However, the vast majority of studies have analyzed the pharmacogenetic associations in populations in Europe and the USA, whereas data in other populations, including Brazil,

Recurrent small bowel obstruction caused by Burkitt lymphoma in an elderly man: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Acute small bowel obstruction is a common surgical emergency usually caused by abdominal adhesions, followed by intraluminal tumors from metastatic disease. Although lymphomas have been known to cause bowel obstruction, Burkitt lymphoma is seldom reported to induce an obstruction in the adult population. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old Hispanic man with a history of abdominal interventions presented to our hospital with abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed a partial small bowel obstruction attributed to local inflammation or adhesions. Medical management with bowel rest a

Fractional-dose yellow fever vaccination: how much more can we do with less?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Climate change, deforestation, urbanization, and increased population mobility have made the risk of large outbreaks of yellow fever more likely than ever. Yellow fever vaccine production barely meets demands. In this review, we address the causes of the recent yellow fever outbreaks, why fractional dose yellow fever vaccination works, the role of virus neutralizing antibodies in the protection against yellow fever, and the need for revaccination. RECENT FINDINGS: Human activities have profoundly changed the epidemiology of yellow fever. The excess of infectious viral parti

Lack of ethnic differences in the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of evolocumab between Caucasian and Asian populations.

AIMS: To evaluate the potential ethnic differences in the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of evolocumab in Caucasian and Asian populations using population PK/PD modelling analysis. METHODS: Data from different ethnic groups in 5 Phase I clinical trials, including two American studies, one Japanese study and two Chinese studies, were chosen for model building and evaluation. A target-mediated drug disposition model together with an indirect response model best captured evolocumab binding and the removal of unbound proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) as well a

Lipid Management in Chronic Kidney Disease: Systematic Review of PCSK9 Targeting.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and CKD is considered a coronary artery disease risk equivalent. So far, statins have been the mainstay of primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in the general population. However, their benefit on outcomes is limited and controversial in CKD patients and new therapeutic approaches to reduce cardiovascular risk are needed. Monoclonal antibodies targeting proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and lipoprotein(a) in h

Implementation research: towards universal health coverage with more doctors in Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the implementation of a programme to provide primary care physicians for remote and deprived populations in Brazil. METHODS: The Mais Médicos (More Doctors) programme was launched in July 2013 with public calls to recruit physicians for priority areas. Other strategies were to increase primary care infrastructure investments and to provide more places at medical schools. We conducted a quasi-experimental, before-and-after evaluation of the implementation of the programme in 1708 municipalities with populations living in extreme poverty and in remote border areas. We com

Arterial stiffness is not associated with bone parameters in an elderly hyperhomocysteinemic population.

Several studies have observed positive associations between bone disease and cardiovascular disease. A potential common pathway is hyperhomocysteinemia; however, to date, there is a lack of data regarding hyperhomocysteinemic populations. Therefore, we examined both cross-sectionally and longitudinally, whether there is an association between bone parameters and arterial stiffness in a hyperhomocysteinemic population, and investigated the potential common role of homocysteine (hcy) level on these associations. Cross-sectional and longitudinal data of the B-PROOF study were used (n = 519). At b
