Impact of health education intervention on the knowledge and management practices of tuberculosis among patent medicine vendors in rural local government areas in Enugu, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis remains a serious public health threat to people of all sexes and ages in Nigeria. A World Health Organization (WHO) global tuberculosis report indicated that Enugu reported a slight increase in all cases of tuberculosis, and case reporting and findings remain low. Any intervention that could improve the knowledge of tuberculosis and treatment referral services will improve case reporting/finding and reduce the incidence rate. The study determined the impact or effectiveness of health education interventions on the knowledge and management practices of patent medicine

The Association between the Type of Mental Health Treatment Received, Metropolitan Status and Gender.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the type of mental health care received and metropolitan status. We combined data from the National Survey for Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) to examine mental health treatment. We grouped participants by metropolitan status and receipt of mental health treatment. We conducted a logistic regression using interaction terms to compare the likelihood of receiving inpatient and/or outpatient treatment for mental health, relative to prescription medication alone. There was an association between the type of mental health treatment receiv

A Maternity Waiting Home Is an Alternative Approach for the Accessibility of Pregnant Women in an Obstetrically Underserved Area of Korea.

BACKGROUND: We analyzed whether a maternity waiting home (MWH) for pregnant women in an obstetrically underserved area of Gangwon-do in Korea, which has been in operation since August 2018, has improved the accessibility of a maternity hospital and pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: We compared and analyzed the accessibility of maternity hospitals for 170 pregnant women who applied for the MWH from August 2018 to May 2022. Among the 170 participants, 64 were MWH users and 106 non-users. The effect on pregnancy outcomes between MWH users and non-users was analyzed in the 160 people who achieved a pr

Testing telediagnostic thyroid ultrasound in Peru: a new horizon in expanding access to imaging in rural and underserved areas.

PURPOSE: Thyroid ultrasound is a key tool in the evaluation of the thyroid, but billions of people around the world lack access to ultrasound imaging. In this study, we tested an asynchronous telediagnostic ultrasound system operated by individuals without prior ultrasound training which may be used to effectively evaluate the thyroid and improve access to imaging worldwide. METHODS: The telediagnostic system in this study utilizes volume sweep imaging (VSI), an imaging technique in which the operator scans the target region with simple sweeps of the ultrasound probe based on external body la

Barriers to diabetic foot care in a disadvantaged population: A qualitative assessment.

OBJECTIVE: We explored barriers to proper foot care in this population using a qualitative approach with focus group discussions (FGD). METHODS: Participants were recruited from clinics at a safety-net hospital in Atlanta, Georgia and stratified into two groups: diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) and minor amputation (below ankle). The FGDs addressed patient experience in receiving care with a goal of understanding: foot care knowledge, barriers to care, and preferred educational methods. Surveys were performed to supplement FGDs. RESULTS: Forty participants (90% Black) were enrolled. Dominant themes

Challenges with tracing patients on antiretroviral therapy who are late for clinic appointments in rural South Africa and recommendations for future practice.

Background: It is common practice for HIV programmes to routinely trace patients who are late for a scheduled clinic visit to ensure continued care engagement. In South Africa, patients who are late for a scheduled visit are identified from clinic registers, and called by telephone up to three times by designated clinic staff, with home visits conducted for those who are unreachable by phone. It is important to understand outcomes among late patients in order to have accurate mortality data, identify defaulters to attempt to re-engage them into care, and have accurate estimates of patients sti

"We sold the buffalo to pay for a brain scan" - a qualitative study of rural experiences with private mental healthcare providers in Uttar Pradesh, India.

The majority of persons with mental distress (PWMD) in India do not have access to care, and even those who seek care are pushed to attend private providers, given the weak and largely absent public mental health services framework. The aim of this study was to examine the experiences in help-seeking and with unethical health service provision among persons with mental distress in the Saharanpur and Bijnor districts of Uttar Pradesh. In-depth interviews were conducted with twenty persons with mental distress and their caregivers. Thematic analysis yielded four key findings about help-seeking:

Role of Religious Leaders in Promoting Contraceptive Use in Nigeria: Evidence From the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Despite the many supply- and demand-side interventions aimed at increasing contraceptive uptake, the modern contraceptive prevalence rate in Nigeria has remained very low (9.8%). Religion is an important part of the sociocultural fabric of many communities. As such, religious leaders have the power to inhibit or facilitate effective adoption of contraceptive methods to support family health. We assess the association of exposure to religious leaders' tailored scriptural family planning messages with contraceptive use in Nigeria. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from a

Food Insecurity and Rural Adolescent Personal Health, Home, and Academic Environments.

BACKGROUND: Food-insecure (FIS) adolescents struggle in school and with health and mental health more often than food-secure (FS) adolescents. Rural communities experience important disparities in health, but little is known about rural FIS adolescents. This study aims to describe select characteristics of rural adolescents by food-security status. METHODS: Baseline analysis using data from a randomized trial to increase school breakfast participation (SBP) in rural Minnesota high schools. Students completed a survey regarding food security, characteristics, and home and school environments.

Why increasing availability of ART is not enough: a rapid, community-based study on how HIV-related stigma impacts engagement to care in rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Stigma is a known barrier to HIV testing and care. Because access to antiretroviral therapy reduces overt illness and mortality, some scholars theorized that HIV-related stigma would decrease as treatment availability increased. However, the association between ART accessibility and stigma has not been as straightforward as originally predicted. METHODS: We conducted a "situational analysis"--a rapid, community-based qualitative assessment to inform a combination HIV prevention program in high prevalence communities. In the context of this community-based research, we conducted se

Pulled in or pushed out? Understanding the complexities of motivation for alternative therapies use in Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have investigated the association between cardiac biomarkers and short-term prognosis in the COVID-19 infection. However, the data on the predictive value of cardiac biomarkers to predict long-term prognosis in COVID-19 infection are limited. We aimed at determining the relationship between N-terminal brain-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-TnI) as cardiac biomarkers and in-hospital/long-term outcomes in COVID-19 infection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included a total of 916 patients with confirmed COVID-19 infectio

Japan as the front-runner of super-aged societies: Perspectives from medicine and medical care in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The demographic structure of a country changes dramatically with increasing trends toward general population aging and declining birth rates. In Japan, the percentage of the elderly population (aged ≥65 years) reached 25% in 2013; it is expected to exceed 30% in 2025 and reach 39.9% in 2060. The national total population has been decreasing steadily since its peak reached in 2008, and it is expected to fall to the order of 80 million in 2060. Of the total population, those aged ≥75 years accounted for 12.3% as of 2013, and this is expected to reach 26.9% in 2060. As the demographic

Ancillary benefits of antenatal ultrasound: an association between the introduction of a low-cost ultrasound program and an increase in the numbers of women receiving recommended antenatal treatments.

BACKGROUND: In June of 2010, an antenatal ultrasound program was introduced to perform basic screening examinations at a health care clinic in rural Uganda. The impact of the program on the existing antenatal care infrastructure including the proportion and number of women receiving recommended antenatal care at clinic visits was unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the advent of the ultrasound program and the proportion of women receiving recommended antenatal interventions at their clinic visits. Change in the absolute numbers of antenatal services provi

Effect of travel distance on household demand for typhoid vaccines: implications for planning.

Typhoid fever causes millions of illnesses and hundreds of thousands of deaths yearly. Vaccinations would mitigate this problem, but the users would probably have to pay some or most of the cost. Several willingness-to-pay studies have assessed the effect of price on private demand to provide a basis for financial planning of campaigns, but the effect of travel distance, which is a potentially important determinant of demand, has not been studied. This paper thus has two objectives: (i) conduct a willingness-to-pay survey to assess the effects of distance, price and other variables on the priv

[Vaccination among students in grades 6-10, 2011 - a comparison of German states: need for action for a targeted nationwide immunisation strategy].

OBJECTIVE: In Germany, surveillance of the population's immunisation is only mandatory for school beginners, not for adolescents. Therefore, no current data are available from the public health service related to the immunisation of adolescents. Also lacking are nationwide monitoring data regarding HPV vaccination among girls aged 12-18 years and the meningococcal C vaccination, both recently introduced by the German Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) in 2009 and 2006, respectively. The present research and analysis therefore aims to determine which German states perform a monitoring of
