Adaptation of a Protocol to Evaluate Online Recruitment Strategies for Mailing HIV Self-Tests and Pilot an Intervention to Improve Linkage to HIV Prevention and Care Among Transgender Women: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Transgender women are disproportionately affected by HIV in the United States. Evidence shows that HIV self-testing increases awareness of HIV status, preventing transmission. Culturally appropriate strategies are needed to provide HIV self-tests (HIVSTs) to transgender women. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to describe an adaptation for transgender women of a comparative effectiveness trial of an intervention (Know@Home website) on the use of HIVSTs, counseling, and linkage of participants to appropriate services initially designed to reach Black or African American and Hispanic or La

Addressing the Mental and Emotional Health Impacts of COVID-19 on Children and Adolescents: Lessons From HIV/AIDS.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to lasting mental health and psychosocial consequences just as were experienced with the HIV epidemic. A rapid review of published systematic reviews on HIV/AIDS and mental health outcomes and responses among children and adolescents was used to identify lessons for the COVID-19 pandemic response. The review found that HIV/AIDS responses to promote mental health, prevent ill-health and treat mental health conditions included diverse interventions at the structural or national, community, household and individual levels. Some of these responses can be easily replic

Factors associated with HIV testing among pregnant women in Indonesia: basic health research.

HIV testing in pregnant women is an effort in preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV. This study aimed to assess the uptake of HIV testing during pregnancy and its related factors in pregnant women aged 10-54 years in Indonesia. We analyzed the secondary data set from the results of the 2018 Indonesian Basic Health Research survey. Adjust Odds Ratio and 95% interval calculated using logistic regression analysis to identify factors associated with HIV testing during pregnancy. Out of a total of 80,648 participants, only 16.2% took an HIV test or around 83.8% of pregnant women who did no

Causes of functional low vision in a Brazilian rehabilitation service.

There is limited information on functional low vision (FLV) in Latin America, especially in individuals under 50 years of age. In the present study, we retrospectively evaluated the medical records of 1393 consecutive subjects seen at a Brazilian tertiary rehabilitation service, from February 2009 to June 2016. We collected sociodemographic, clinical data, and information on optical aids and spectacle prescription. Subjects were divided into three age groups: 0 to 14 years old (children), 15 to 49 years old (young adults), and 50 years or older (older adults). The main etiologies leading to FL

PURPOSE: There is little long-term, population-based data on uptake of prenatal diagnosis for Huntington disease (HD), a late-onset autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder, and the effect of the availability of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) on families' decisions about conventional prenatal diagnosis is not known. We report trends in prenatal diagnosis and preimplantation diagnosis for HD in the United Kingdom since services commenced. METHODS: Long-term UK-wide prospective case record-based service evaluation in 23 UK Regional Genetic Centres 1988-2015, and four UK PGD center

Cost of abortions in Zambia: A comparison of safe abortion and post abortion care.

Unsafe abortion is a significant but preventable cause of maternal mortality. Although induced abortion has been legal in Zambia since 1972, many women still face logistical, financial, social, and legal obstacles to access safe abortion services, and undergo unsafe abortion instead. This study provides the first estimates of costs of post abortion care (PAC) after an unsafe abortion and the cost of safe abortion in Zambia. In the absence of routinely collected data on abortions, we used multiple data sources: key informant interviews, medical records and hospital logbooks. We estimated the co

Frequent fliers, school phobias, and the sick student: school health personnel's perceptions of students who refuse school.

BACKGROUND: This study explored school personnel's perceptions of school refusal, as it has been described as a "common educational and public health problem" that is less tolerated due to increasing awareness of the potential socioeconomic consequences of this phenomenon. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with school personnel at the middle school (N = 42), high school (N = 40), and district levels (N = 10). The findings focus on emergent themes from interviews with school health personnel (N = 12), particularly those themes related to their perceptions of and role in working with

Management of cardiopulmonary bypass in patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes in surgery for active infective endocarditis.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the USA and in all other countries which have studied its incidence. It is the second leading cause of death of children in the USA. To decrease the incidence of child abuse and improve the welfare of children there must be international efforts to recognize, and report child abuse and to decrease those risk factors, which place children in jeopardy. In the USA, reports of child maltreatment have decreased each year since 1994 after nearly two decades of increase. The increase was associated with the passage of laws that ma

Lessons learned from implementation of a demonstration program to reduce the burden of anemia and hookworm in women in Yen Bai Province, Viet Nam.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency, anemia and hookworm disease are important public health problems for women of reproductive age living in developing countries and affect the health of newborns and infants. Iron supplementation and deworming treatment are effective in addressing these problems in both pregnant and non-pregnant women. Daily iron supplementation and deworming after the first trimester is recommended for pregnant women although these programs usually do not operate efficiently or effectively. Weekly iron-folic acid supplementation and regular deworming for non-pregnant women may be a

3Es-Based Program to Enhance Safety Behaviors Among Fermented Fish Producers in Northeast Thailand: Implications for Liver Fluke and Cholangiocarcinoma Prevention.

OBJECTIVE: Consumption of fermented freshwater fish is common in Northeast Thailand but increases the risk of Opisthorchis viverrini (OV) infection, nitrosamine exposure, and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). This study evaluated a 3Es-based safety program designed to enhance knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and to reduce ergonomic risks among informal fish processors. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 100 participants from two fishing communities in Ubon Ratchathani Province. Integration of harm reduction principles and practices within specialty substance use treatment programs in New Jersey: A qualitative study of program leadership.

INTRODUCTION: Harm reduction is a philosophical approach to improve the health of people who use drugs (PWUD) that integrates risk reduction, evidence-based treatment, and person-centered care. Specialty substance use treatment programs have historically been siloed from, and often misaligned with, harm reduction principles, but this trend has begun to shift in recent years. This study explored the ways in which some specialty treatment settings are adopting harm reduction principles and practices. METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with leaders of 14 New Jersey specialty treatment

Patient perceptions of barriers to attending annual diabetes review and foot assessment in general practice: a qualitative study.

Introduction Regular diabetic foot checks, at least annually, are important for early identification of risk factors and prevention of ulceration and amputation. To ensure this, most general practices in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) offer free annual diabetes reviews (ADRs) which include a comprehensive foot evaluation. However, attendance rates at these ADRs are low. Aim To explore patients' perspectives on the barriers to attending ADRs and foot checks. Methods Semi-structured interviews with people with type 2 diabetes who were overdue their ADR (n  = 13; 7 women, 6 Māori) from two urban pract
