Hong Kong's unique medical heritage stems from its development as a city with a predominantly Chinese population and a long history of exposure to the influence of Western cultural and scientific ideas and practices. This heritage is preserved and displayed in the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, where exhibits of both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western medicine, particularly those aspects with special relevance to Hong Kong, are featured. This paper also describes the significance of the plague outbreak of 1894 in shaping Hong Kong's medical history, and in bringing about the exist

The global strategy for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) is based on annual mass drug administration (MDA) to interrupt transmission. Noncompliance with MDA represents a serious programmatic obstacle for the LF program because systematically noncompliant individuals may serve as a reservoir for the parasite and permit recrudescence of infection. Using a survey questionnaire concerning practices, beliefs, and attitudes towards MDA, we assessed differences between noncompliant individuals and compliant individuals in Leogane, Haiti (n = 367) after four years of treatment. A logistic

Alpha-thalassaemia mutations are common. In Southeast Asia, they cause Hb H disease and Hb Barts hydrops fetalis. Fetuses with the devastating Hb Barts hydrops fetalis due to the complete lack of alpha-globin gene die in utero or shortly after birth, often during the second or third trimesters. Recent findings on patients with Hb H disease who have only one active alpha-globin gene suggest that it is not necessarily a benign disorder as previously thought. The disease burden of these syndromes and their public health importance have been largely neglected. We review the population carrier freq

Schistosomiasis is a major public health problem in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and South America. The main control strategy is to treat infected people with anthelmintic drugs, principally the safe and relatively cheap drug praziquantel. Several treatment re-infection studies in humans have shown that praziquantel can have long-term effects beyond a transient reduction of infection intensity. These long-term effects include the altering of schistosome-specific immune responses in humans, which is associated with resistance to re-infection. Differences have been observed in treatment-induced

The attempts by experts from the of the Rockefeller Foundation (RF) to eliminate yellow fever in Brazil were hampered by the pathology's low visibility. Most cases of yellow fever were atypical and easily confused with other fevers. In the 1920s, the RF experts who tried to assess the presence of yellow fever relied mainly on clinical observations. In the 1930s, however, they devised indirect methods of visualizing the presence of the disease agent. Visceroctomy revealed the presence of acute cases of the disease. Mouse protection tests revealed past contacts with the agent. Taken together, th

BACKGROUND: New York State Public Health Law Section 2805-z (NYSPHL§2805-z) mandates that hospitals implement certain protocols for the identification of domestic violence (DV) to strengthen support for DV survivors. However, there are challenges within our current health care delivery settings that raise critical questions about the effectiveness and adaptability of mandated policies for DV screening. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly accelerated the adoption of telehealth services, leading to the widespread use of combined telehealth and in-person clinical care. This shift has brought chal

Zika virus disease is caused by infection with a flavivirus with broad geographic distribution and is most frequently transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. The disease was first identified in the World Health Organization's Region of the Americas in 2015 and was followed by a surge in reported cases of congenital microcephaly in Brazil; Zika virus disease rapidly spread to the rest of the region and the Caribbean (1), including Haiti. Infection with the virus is associated with adverse fetal outcomes (1) and rare neurologic complications in adults. The magnitude of public health iss

BACKGROUND: Sleep quality is a critical component of health and recovery, yet it remains a significant challenge during hospitalization. Poor sleep among inpatients is common and worsens throughout hospital stays, adversely affecting health outcomes and patient wellbeing. Despite its importance, sleep often receives limited attention within hospital policies and nursing practices.
AIM: To evaluate the impact of hospitalization and night-time nursing interventions on the sleep quality of noncritical patients in Spanish public hospitals.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Public health agencies in U.S. states, territories, and freely associated states investigate and voluntarily report waterborne disease outbreaks to CDC through the National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS). This report summarizes NORS drinking water outbreak epidemiologic, laboratory, and environmental data, including data for both public and private drinking water systems. The report presents outbreak-contributing factors (i.e., practices and factors that lead to outbreaks) and, for the first time, categorizes outbreaks as biofilm pathogen or enteric illness associated.

This paper presents practical methodologies for determining effective reproduction numbers, R(t), providing valuable insights for researchers and public health officials. It proposes multiple simplified approaches for estimating R(t) of infectious diseases and compares their effectiveness. These approaches include methods based on exponential, fixed (delta), normal, and gamma distributions for the generation time. The exponential and fixed generation time methods offer convenience as they rely solely on the mean generation time and the number of new infections. However, they are sensitive to t

BACKGROUND: Gambling disorder (GD) is a pressing public health concern with significant societal costs. The recently developed nudge theory, which is rooted in behavioral economics, aims to influence the decision-making behaviors of individuals by implementing changes in the environment.
AIM: This scoping review aims to synthesize the literature on nudge theory as it relates to gambling.
METHODS: This scoping review accords with the Arksey and O'Malley framework, as refined by Levac et al. It includes only articles from peer-reviewed journals that focus, as main themes, on both nudge theory

The soaring rise of electronic and electrical waste (E-waste) leads to significant challenges to the South Asian region, urging for incorporating comprehensive assessment and management strategies. The research dives into the intricacies of E-waste and examines how regulatory barriers, public ignorance, and the limited lifespan of electronic devices all contribute to the significant production of E-waste. This study emphasizes the vital need for ongoing and appropriate management practices by bringing attention to the short lifespan of electronic devices and the resulting generation of E-waste

Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, and its incidence is highest in middle-aged and older patients. Adding to the diagnostic complexity, up to 50% of patients aged > 65 years present atypically, with subacute oligo- or polyarticular flares. Comorbidity and polypharmacy, common in older populations, affect real-world treatment decisions in gout management, and no specific guidelines are available to address these issues in these at-risk groups. Despite the growing public health burden posed by gout, suboptimal management has led to increased morbidity and substantial healthc

Emerging foodborne pathogens present a threat to public health. It is now recognized that several foodborne pathogens originate from wildlife as demonstrated by recent global disease outbreaks. Zoonotic spillover events are closely related to the ubiquity of parasitic, bacterial, and viral pathogens present within human and animal populations and their surrounding environment. Foodborne diseases have economic and international trade impacts, incentivizing effective wildlife disease management. In North America, there are no food safety standards for handling and consumption of free-ranging gam

This demonstration project explored the feasibility of utilizing data from pediatric primary care providers to evaluate the long-term outcomes of children with disorders identified by newborn screening (NBS). Compliance with national guidelines for care and the morbidity for this population was also examined. Primary care practices were recruited and patients with sickle cell disease or who were deaf/hard of hearing were given the opportunity to enroll in the study. Data were collected on the quality of the medical home with practice data compared to family responses. Clinical outcomes for eac

Inadequate antidote stocking is a global problem in hospitals. Insufficient supplies and delays in the administration of antidotes could lead to death and additional potentially negative clinical consequences. Our objective was to determine the availability of antidotes in hospitals listed on the Saudi Ministry of Health website in the Riyadh Province and to evaluate the leading poison in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study was conducted using questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed to pharmacist directors and emergency room-treating physicians in 17 public hospitals throughout t
