What types of tobacco control public service advertisements work for Chinese adolescents? A mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent tobacco use has become a serious global public health problem, and effective tobacco control public service advertisements (PSAs) are crucial for reducing adolescent smoking rates. The study aims to employ a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative surveys and qualitative focus groups to evaluate the effectiveness of different types of tobacco control PSAs among Chinese adolescents, identify effective advertising characteristics and content elements, and provide empirical evidence for optimizing youth tobacco control communication strategies. METHODS: A total of

Politics in policy: An experimental examination of public views regarding sentence reductions via second chance mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE: This research examined how the cost of incarceration to the state and type of offense affect public support for different levels of sentence reductions (10%, 25%, 50%) via policies called "second chance" mechanisms that reduce incarcerated populations as well as whether political ideology or affiliation predicts such support. HYPOTHESES: (a) Across different levels of sentence reductions, participants were expected to show significantly decreased support for the use of second chance mechanisms for violent compared with nonviolent crimes (b) but also to show significantly increased

Public Health Insurance Coverage for Immigrants during Pregnancy, Childhood, and Adulthood: A Discussion of Relevant Policies and Evidence.

CONTEXT: Despite major expansions in public health insurance under Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program over the last 60 years, many immigrants remain ineligible for coverage. METHODS: The authors discuss the existing federal and state policies that extend public health eligibility to low-income pregnant immigrants, children, and nonelderly adults. They also conduct a literature review and summarize quasi-experimental evidence examining the impact of public health insurance eligibility expansions on insurance coverage, health care use, and health outcomes among immigrants. Shaping the future of inflammatory bowel disease: a global research agenda for better management and public health response.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a growing global health challenge affecting more than 7 million people worldwide. With increasing prevalence across all age groups, including children and adolescents, IBD places substantial strain on health-care systems and society, resulting in high direct medical costs, lost productivity and reduced quality of life. Despite therapeutic advances, suboptimal disease control and delays in timely diagnosis and adequate treatment persist. Regional disparities in health-care access contribute to these challenges, especially in low-income countries. Addressing t

Urbanization and Health Inequity in Sub-Saharan Africa: Examining Public Health and Environmental Crises in Douala, Cameroon.

Africa's rapid urbanization often exceeds the capacity of governments to provide essential services and infrastructure, exacerbating structural inequalities and exposing vulnerable populations to serious health risks. This paper examines the case of Douala, Cameroon, to demonstrate that health inequities in African cities are not simply the result of urban growth but are shaped by spatial inequities, historical legacies, and systemic exclusion. Disadvantaged neighborhoods are particularly impacted, becoming epicenters of health crises. Using a mixed-methods approach combining spatial analysis,

Impact of compulsory military service on public health: significant benefits for obese and unfit young adult men.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and poor physical fitness are essential concerns for public health and disease prevention. Alarmingly, the prevalence of both risk factors is increasing in younger populations. We investigated what is the impact of compulsory military service on waist circumference and cardiorespiratory fitness in large sample of Finnish young men. METHODS: Our study was based on a database from the Finnish Defence Forces, which includes information on 249,279 healthy male conscripts (age 19.1 ± 0.4 years.). We measured the waist circumference, and cardiorespiratory fitness (12-min running

Can public education campaigns equitably counter the use of substandard and falsified medical products in African countries?

Substandard and falsified (SF) medical products are a serious health and economic concern that disproportionately impact low- and middle-income countries and marginalized groups. Public education campaigns are demand-side interventions that may reduce the risk of SF exposure, but the effectiveness of such campaigns, and their likelihood of benefitting everybody, is unclear. Nationwide pilot risk communication campaigns, involving multiple media, were deployed in Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Uganda in 2020-21. Focus group discussions (n = 73 with n = 611 total participants) and key informa

Healthy life style practice and its associated factors among public servants in Fiche town, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential to lowering the global burden of non-communicable diseases. Living a healthy lifestyle reduces the likelihood of developing a severe illness or passing away too soon. Public officials frequently lead unhealthy lifestyles because they are time-pressed and face many challenges that could negatively impact their health. However, there is limited evidence on the level of healthy lifestyle practice and factors associated with unhealthy lifestyle practice among public servants. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess healthy lifestyle practice

Neoliberal Governance and Agribusiness Influence: Public Health Policymaking and the Risk to Meatpacking Workers During COVID-19.

In this article, we examine how neoliberal governance, corporate influence and public health policy intersected during the COVID-19 pandemic in one meatpacking town we call Cattleford. We focus on two research questions: (1) In what ways did the political power of agribusiness shape local-level public health policymaking around meatpacking during COVID-19? and (2) how did neoliberalised governance mechanisms influence public health policies during the COVID-19 pandemic? Utilising 39 in-depth interviews, we found that Cattleford's public health approach was heavily influenced by pro-business, l

We analyzed a nationally representative sample of local public health professionals (LPHPs) from varying jurisdiction sizes across the United States who responded to the 2024 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS). Our goal was to explore experiences of burnout; perceived belonging within an agency; self-rated mental and emotional well-being; and intentions to leave an organization. Results showed that burnout was negatively associated with and perceived belonging within an agency was positively associated with ratings of mental and emotional health. Each of these 3 varia

Can public-domain datasets be leveraged to identify factors associated with the occurrence of African swine fever in europe?

BACKGROUND: African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious and deadly viral disease affecting domestic pigs and wild boars. This study uses public domain datasets to identify the association between (a)biotic variables and occurrences of ASF in domestic pigs and wild boars in Europe. The public domain databases WOAH-WAHIS and EMPRES-i were used to obtain data about ASF cases in domestic pigs and wild boars from 2018 to 2023. Several (a)biotic variables were considered as potential drivers for ASF: precipitation, temperature, human-animal interface density, and type of land cover. A Shiny app

Reported lack of social support among mothers of preterm infants in a public follow-up service in Brazil.

A quantitative, cross-sectional analysis was conducted with 42 mothers of preterm-born infants from a follow-up service at a large public hospital in Brazil. Data were collected using the Social Support Satisfaction Scale (SSSS) and a socioeconomic questionnaire. Statistical analyses revealed less reported social support from family and friends among single women with less education and less income. These findings highlight th

[O negative blood for everyone? No, transfusion and obstetrical management of a pregnant woman with an anti-public H1I1 antibody].

A woman pregnant with her first child, blood group B+, showed pan-agglutination on antibody identification panels during her pregnancy follow-up. The absence of agglutination between the patient's plasma and a panel of B-phenotype red blood cells led to the conclusion of the presence of an anti-H1I1. This antibody is not thought to be responsible for fetal anemia or neonatal hemolytic disease, thus follow-up of fetal anemia is not necessary. However, in the event of transfusion, prior compatibility with blood of the same ABO group is necessary. In emergencies, group O depot blood should not be
