Quality of life in patients with non-metastatic differentiated thyroid cancer under thyroxine supplementation therapy.

GOALS: When thyroid and other cancers are "cured" it is often assumed that the patients are able to resume their normal lives. This was a cross-sectional study to evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and to identify rehabilitation needs of patients with non-metastatic thyroid cancer under thyroxine supplementation therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Included in the study were 150 consecutive patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (age 52 +/- 14 years, range 25-83 years; male/female 39/111). All patients had a history of total thyroidectomy followed by radioiodine ablation, were fre

Quality of life, psychosocial well-being, and sexual satisfaction in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder characterized by chronic anovulation and hyperandrogenism. PCOS is one of the leading causes of infertility and manifests with hirsutism, acne, and obesity. To investigate its impact on health-related quality of life and sexuality, 50 women with PCOS and 50 controls were evaluated with standardized questionnaires (36-item short-form health survey, symptom checklist revised, and life satisfaction questionnaire). The impact of hirsutism, obesity, and infertility was assessed using five-point rating scales, and sexual satisfaction wa

[Creating a specific diagnostic and quality-of-life questionnaire for patients with ocular surface disease].

INTRODUCTION: Ocular surface diseases (OSD) affect about 15% of the population over 65 years of age. Nevertheless, OSD knowledge in the scientific community remains poor, and the healthcare system does not adequately recognize this disorder. However, many patients with OSD suffering from chronic pain experience substantial alteration in their quality of life (QoL). PURPOSE: Our work aimed at developing a patient self-evaluation questionnaire specific to OSD. This questionnaire could thus become a useful diagnostic tool that ophthalmologists could employ in daily practice in order to better un

Quality of life 2-10 years after combined treatment for advanced oral and oropharyngeal cancer.

This study reports the findings of an evaluation of Quality of Life (QOL) in long-term survivors of advanced oral and oropharyngeal cancer treated with preoperative chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery (combined treatment=multimodal therapy). All patients had T2-T4 tumours and all received locoregional radical resection and simultaneous microvascular reconstruction. From 1990 to 1998, 181 patients have been treated at the University Hospital of Cranio-Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery in Vienna. 100 (55%) of these patients were alive and free of disease in 2000. Sixty-seven of them completed the

Quality of life after antireflux surgery compared with nonoperative management for severe gastroesophageal reflux disease.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease significantly affects a patient's quality of life (QOL). Laparoscopic fundoplication offers an alternative to medical therapy, but few studies have compared outcomes. Our objective was to examine QOL scores in gastroesophageal reflux disease patients treated medically and surgically. STUDY DESIGN: We undertook a retrospective analysis of patients undergoing surgical or medical treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease over a 1-year period (August 1997 to August 1998). Followup QOL was measured using the Short-Form 36, and heartburn severity was

Virtual reality: using the virtual world to improve quality of life in the real world.

Mental health professionals are increasingly integrating advances in technology to improve the health of those in their care (American Psychological Association, 2000). The authors describe the immersive properties of virtual reality and its importance for clinical purposes and then review the literature describing current clinical applications of virtual reality (VR) and research documenting its efficacy. Virtual reality has been used in the treatment of specific phobias, posttraumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, and pain management.

Right hepatic lobe donation for living donor liver transplantation: impact on donor quality of life.

Adult right hepatic lobe living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has rapidly gained widespread acceptance as an effective procedure for selected patients with end-stage liver disease. However, there are currently no published data on the effect of this procedure on the quality of life of donors. We report the results of a survey of our living liver transplant donors to determine the effect of right hepatic lobe donation on quality of life. We have performed 30 LDLTs since 1997; 24 of these have a follow-up of 4 months or longer. In August 2000, these patients were sent a questionnaire (inclu

Quality of Life Trajectories After Partial Laryngectomy Versus Total Laryngectomy Stratified by Voice Rehabilitation Success.

BACKGROUND: Although partial laryngectomy (PL) is often preferred for functional preservation, long-term quality-of-life (QoL) outcomes after total laryngectomy (TL) may vary according to voice rehabilitation success. We compared five-year longitudinal QoL trajectories among PL, TL with successful voice rehabilitation (TL-S), and TL with failed rehabilitation (TL-F). METHODS: Ninety-two patients were categorized into PL (n = 52), TL-S (n = 21), and TL-F (n = 19). QoL was assessed from baseline to 5 years postoperatively using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Qual

Between hope and hardship: Lived experiences and quality of life among cancer patients in Kashmir.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer is a leading cause of mortality worldwide and imposes significant psychosocial burdens. Beyond physical illness, patients experience psychological distress, anxiety, depression, and social isolation, particularly during active treatment. In Kashmir, cultural factors such as stigma, religious values, and gender norms strongly influence illness perception and coping; however, qualitative studies exploring lived experiences during treatment remain limited. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences, quality of life, and coping mechanisms of cancer patients in Kashmir duri

Perfectionism, self-compassion, intuitive eating and health-related quality of life in kidney transplant recipients.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects ~850 million people globally, imposing significant health burdens. This study was the first to examine how perfectionism, via self-compassion, stress and coping, predicts health outcomes such as health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and intuitive eating for kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Structural equation modelling was used to examine these relationships in KTRs (n = 354, x̄ age = 53.10 years, SD = 12.46 years, 74.6% female) and a non-CKD comparison group (n = 400, x̄ age = 39.39 years, SD = 12.91 years, 84.3% female). Results showed that 'maladapt
