The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical and electromyographical characteristics of the initial picture, and the subsequent course of the radiation-induced brachial plexopathy. The AA. studied 13 females affected by infiltrating carcinoma of the breast, who underwent a radical mastectomy with removal of the axillary cavity, followed by radiotherapy (total dose was 50 Gy per cycle). From November 1977 through April 1982, a total of 91 patients with early glottic cancer (T1N0M0) were treated with the open field technique of 4 MV X-ray using parallel opposed fields in bandage. Radiation dose administered was 60 Gy in 30 fractions over 6-week periods. Actuarial 5-year disease-free survival rate was 88.7%. Significant prognostic factors of local control were tumor length, tumor width, tumor type, tumor response at 40 Gy and 60 Gy. Ultimate local control rate by salvage surgery was 97% and voice preservation rate was 91%.

A protocol for calculating radiation absorbed dose to pheochromocytoma tumors during treatment with 131I-labeled metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) is described. The small intestinal motor effects of fractionated doses of ionizing radiation were studied in 6 conscious dogs. Eight strain-gauge transducers were implanted on the small intestine and a single gauge on the ascending colon, of each dog. This is an analysis of 54 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the pyriform sinus treated with radical irradiation at the University of Florida between October 1964 and March 1984. There is a 2-year minimum follow-up on all patients and 85% have at least 5 years of follow-up. Emergency department personnel experience potential occupational hazards from exposure to ionizing radiation (x-rays). To assess this risk, ionizing radiation exposure was analyzed during a nine-year period for 128 ED personnel. The group consisted of 21 physicians, 92 nurses, and 15 ancillary personnel. Exposure was measured for both penetrating and nonpenetrating radiation using standard film dosimeter badges. In connection with clinical 131I-MIBG studies of patients with suspected pheochromocytoma and adrenomedullary hyperplasia quantitative biokinetic data have been collected in order to improve the present estimations of absorbed dose to various organs and tissues. Two cases of dermatitis solaris in newborns after phototherapy with a halide burner gave reason to measure the UV-B radiation emitted by the instrument used. Values between 0.8 microW/cm2 and 1.8 microW/cm2 were found. In small areas under the lamp housing the intensities of the UV-B radiation reached up to 10 microW/cm2. These high intensities are caused by the design of the lamp housing. Especially in connection with aluminium foil used to increase the efficacy of the therapy skin leasons as described may be produced.

The survival, pattern of failure and complications in 47 patients with Stage III and IV cancers of the glottis, supraglottis and hypopharynx treated with surgery and postoperative radiotherapy using a new treatment technique referred to as "mini-mantle" were analyzed. Over 5 years, CT of the thorax was performed on 53 patients with Hodgkin disease and mediastinal lymphadenopathy prior to the institution of therapeutic irradiation. Information obtained from CT prompted major alterations in the plan of therapy in 11 of 53 (21%) of the patients. These included changes of treatment portal size, the addition of localized boost therapy, and a revision of diagnosis.

A retrospective 10-year review of thyroid function in 144 patients treated for cancer of the head and neck by radiation therapy, surgery, and combined surgery and radiation therapy was done. In five patients, hypothyroidism had been found in the posttreatment period. Human keratinocytes in culture were prelabeled with [3H]arachidonic acid (AA) and then exposed to ultraviolet B radiation.
