Radiotherapy is a useful tool in the treatment of head and neck cancer either in an adjuvant or in a palliative setting. The tolerance doses of many tissues are near or even lower than the necessary therapeutic doses. Therefore some side effects of radiotherapy are unavoidable, others can be reduced if special technics are applied. Lymphedema of the head and neck is more often caused by radical surgery than by radiotherapy. The objective in this paper is to describe the severity and outcome of arterial occlusion complicating treatment of women with gynecologic cancer. A series of six patients who underwent amputation were identified. Acute arterial occlusions were seen in three patients. BACKGROUND: More than 83 cases of retinal laser injury were reported in the literature. Most of these cases involved direct exposure of the patient's retina to laser. The authors observed two patients who had laser injury to the retina caused by the reflected beams from a pulsed neodymium: YAG (Nd:YAG) laser.

Nodular goiters are encountered commonly in clinical practice by primary care physicians, endocrinologists, surgeons, and otolaryngologists. Epidemiologic data suggest that in the United States, the incidence of such goiters is approximately 0.1% to 1.5% per year, translating into 250,000 new nodules annually. Multivariate regression analysis proved that radiation of allowable level had no unfavorable influence on morbidity with transitory disablement. Increased from 0.15 to 2.0 microGy/hr dose rate of gamma radiation at the workplaces resulted in slightly lower morbidity. Unfavorable influence on morbidity was caused by physical factors (noise, vibration, microclimate, work hardness), irritating and neurotoxic chemicals in amounts which seldom exceeded the allowable norms, hostile climate and geographic conditions.

To improve efficacy of radiotherapy in head and neck carcinomas, shortening the treatment time by accelerated fractionation is one possible method. However, there is a risk of enhancing side-effects. The somnolence syndrome is a postirradiation syndrome in children. It is to be found after cranial irradiation of chemotherapeutically treated children with ALL (acute lymphocytic leukaemia). Rarely, however, it is a radiation sequela of operated cerebral tumors. We report on such a case of somnolence syndrome, review the literature and discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic problems.
