Measurements of neck count-rates for personnel who regularly iodinated proteins with 125I showed that, generally, count rates were higher after iodination than before. The major pathway for the intake of 125I during iodination was through skin that was exposed to the free-iodine atmosphere of the fume hood. Neck count-rates were measured in 34 other subjects who were working with 125I. The rates for 25 of them were significantly greater than for a control group of 36 subjects. Faecal excretion of labelled bile salts after intravenous injection of carboxyl 14C-cholic acid was normal or low in eleven patients with untreated coeliac disease without diarrhoea. Five other coeliac patients with evident diarrhoea had increased excretion of labelled bile salts, suggesting that bile salt malabsorption may contribute to diarrhoea in coeliac disease.

(131)Iodine ((131)I) labelled antibody directed against human chorionic gonadatrophin (hCG) was given on 21 occasions to 18 patients with hCG-producing neoplasms. Tumours were localized by external scintigraphy in 13 of 21 investigations. Positive results were obtained reliably when serum hCG exceeded 500 miu/ml and in some cases sensitivity was comparable to that of computerized tomography. A positive result probably implies viability in the tumour and this was of practical value in discriminating between necrotic deposits and living tumour before surgery.

To determine the effect of antibiotic-induced nephrotoxicity on the renal accumulation of gallium, groups of ten Sprague-Dawley rats were given intraperitoneal injections of gentamycin, amphotericin, or neomycin for a period of 16--21 days. In all cases, mild to moderate nephrotoxicity was documented by one or more of the following parameters: serum creatinine, renal weight, urine volume (renal concentrating ability), light microscopy, and electron microscopy. The gamma-radiation-induced free radicals in single crystals of glutaric acid and glutaric-2,2,4,4-d4 acid were studied in the temperature range 77-300 K by e.s.r. techniques. In infants and children, anomalous origin of the left coronary artery (ALCA) from the pulmonary artery may be difficult to distinguish from congestive cardiomyopathy (CCM) of other causes. We performed thallium-201 myocardial perfusion imaging in seven children with ALCA and in nine with CCM to study the usefulness of this technique in distinguishing between these lesions. A visual index of thyroid uptake (VITU) is introduced as a qualitative measure of thyroid trapping. This index is determined from the 20-minute 99mTc-pertechnetate scan by visually comparing the relative tracer uptake between the thyroid and salivary glands. Three categories are defined: low, normal and elevated. The VITU correctly identified the functional status of the thyroid in 94% of 123 patients studied and agreed with the 24-hour radioiodine uptake (RAIU) in 89%. The results of a combined study of 25 patients with idiopathic hydronephrosis are presented. Diuresis renography was performed pre-operatively and surgically removed specimens of the renal pelvis and ureter were examined by light and electron microscopy. There was good correlation between the results of these 2 methods of assessment which have defined 2 broad categories of patients with renal pelvic dilatation. These findings are discussed with particular reference to the clinical value of diuresis renography.

Seven patients with Cushing's syndrome secondary to adrenocortical tumors were studied using 131I-19-iodocholesterol. The diagnosis of all cases were verified histologically. The treatment of benign forms of thyroid disease is reviewed. Endemic goiter is a public health problem preventable by the addition of iodine to the food or water supply. Endemic and familial goiters are treated with replacement doses of I-thyroxine, as are sporadic colloid goiters and goiters resulting from chronic thyroiditis. Effective control of a recurrent malignant pleural effusion can greatly improve the quality of life of the cancer patient. At least a dozen different techniques have been advocated for controlling this common complication of malignant disease. The absorption of oral 14C-glyceryl tripalmitate was tested in 77 subjects by hourly interval sampling of breath 14CO2 for up to 6 h. A highly significant correlation was obtained between maximum breath 14CO2 activity and faecal fat excretion. The test was very effective in differentiating between patients with and without steatorrhoea.
