We treated tongue ulcers in a twenty-two-month-old male child with Gaucher disease and several neuronopathic symptoms, including frequent convulsions. Because the patient was always thrusting his tongue and biting with his upper and lower primary incisors during the myoclonus and convulsions, traumatic decubital ulcers on the dorsum and ventral surface of the tongue were formed. Ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint leads in children to serious disorders such as loss of dentition, growth retardation of the lower jaw, facial asymmetry etc. During the period from 1993 till 1997 we treated 12 children incl. eight who had unilateral and four bilateral ankylosis. METHODS: The silicone intraocular lens was implanted secondarily in 25 aphakic eyes with intact posterior capsule and zonules or capsule rupture at central zone through a 3.5 mm sutureless scleral tunnel incision.

Of 241 cases operated with pars-plana vitrectomy and silicone oil filling for complicated retinal detachment we performed retinotomies for drainage of subretinal fluid or removal of subretinal strands in 48 cases (20%) and retinectomies for relief of traction in 80 cases (33%). A technique is described to allow electron microscopic investigation of a specific feature of a section on a glass slide. A section on a glass slide (previously treated with a silicone release agent) is processed as required for light microscopy. The section is then impregnated with Araldite and cured with an epoxy resin block on top of it. The section and block are removed from the slide and viewed with a light microscope.
