The Promise of Intranasal Oxytocin in Treating Borderline Personality Disorder: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex psychiatric condition marked by emotional dysregulation, interpersonal instability, and impulsivity. Despite the advances in psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, many patients show a partial or unstable response. Recent research suggests that oxytocin, a neuropeptide involved in social cognition and emotional regulation, may offer novel therapeutic avenues. METHODS: We systematically synthesize evidence from PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Google Scholar on oxytocin's role in BPD, prioritizing studies on neurobiolog

Trauma, Stress, and Mental Health Outcomes.

Trauma and chronic stress represent critical and growing challenges in mental health across the lifespan, contributing to a wide spectrum of psychiatric conditions. These include post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, substance abuse disorders, and personality disorders. While acute traumatic events trigger immediate psychological responses, long-term exposure to stressors can result in chronic biological and emotional impacts. These stressors interact with various neurobiological systems involving the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cor

Expansive bodies and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease under mass supervision.

Negative health outcomes experienced by individuals and communities impacted by carceral systems have been documented across the social science and public health literature for some time. This research has tended to prioritize the health impact of incarceration, while outcomes associated with the largest system of correctional control, community supervision (e.g. parole and probation), have only recently begun to be examined. These examinations have tended to prioritize structural pathways, deploying a "social determinants of health" framework ubiquitous in public health research and policy ma

Impact of Social Determinants of Health on Primary Adherence of Oral Anticoagulants Among Patients with Newly Diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation.

INTRODUCTION: Oral anticoagulants (OAC) reduce the risk of stroke among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, adherence remains suboptimal. We focused on primary nonadherence to OAC and its associations with patient characteristics-specifically social determinants of health collected in electronic health records (EHR). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used EHR data linked to prescription fill data from a large, integrated Midwestern community healthcare system. Adult patients with an incident AF diagnosis from 2020 to 2021 and a first OAC prescription (index visit) were inc

Quality of life in older immigrant adults on hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: In the United States (U.S.), over 34% of individuals with Chronic kidney disease (CKD) are aged 65 or older. Understanding the quality of life (QoL) in this population is essential. While there has been research on the experiences of U.S.-born older adults on hemodialysis, there is limited data on the experiences of older immigrant adults with CKD. PURPOSE: This study aims to explore the perceived QoL of older immigrant adults living with stage 5 CKD, with a focus on how the disease impacts their cultural beliefs, practices, and overall well-being. METHODS: A qualitative, basic i

The chronic aftermath of recurrent intimate partner violence-related brain injuries: Insights from rat models of traumatic brain injury and non-fatal strangulation.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious global health concern that primarily affects women. Traumatic brain injury (TBI; e.g., concussion) and non-fatal strangulation (NFS) are common forms of IPV-related brain injuries which often occur in combination and are highly repetitive in nature. While our understanding of the consequences of repetitive TBI (rTBI) has improved due to research in sport and military settings, little is known about the repercussions of repetitive NFS (rNFS) or rTBI+rNFS. We recently developed the first rat model of NFS and found that rats exposed to a single TBI + N

Mpox Outbreak: A Call for Urgent Action and Improved Response Strategies.

INTRODUCTION: The resurgence of mpox presents a significant global public health challenge, especially in non-endemic regions. Following its initial global spread in 2022, the current outbreak is driven by a newly emerged Clade I, exhibiting atypical clinical manifestations and altered transmission patterns. These changes, coupled with limited immunity in younger populations due to the absence of smallpox vaccination, underscore the severity. As of June 2024, nearly 100,000 cases have been documented worldwide, with Africa experiencing the majority of new cases, highlighting critical gaps in g

The role of acculturative stress and self-construal in maladaptive eating behaviors among female young adults in diverse college settings.

UNLABELLED: The increasing cultural diversity in the United States means more college students identify with racial and ethnic minority backgrounds and may experience acculturative stress. Emerging research has found an association between acculturative stress and maladaptive eating. However, these studies rarely consider other theoretical factors or confounders, and individual differences. Thus, the unique contribution of acculturative stress and the generalizability of previous findings remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study investigated the role of acculturative stress and s

A comparative analysis of adolescents' emotions and emotion regulation strategies when witnessing different cyberbullying scenarios.

The search for greater popularity and acceptance by peers increases the use of social networks that may cause cyberbullying. The high number of adolescents who observe this phenomenon may help reduce the negative impact on the victims. Emotion regulation is an important predictor of adolescents' psychological adjustment and social competence to adopt a prosocial behavior. Bystanders of these incidents may misinterpret what they see, due to specific cyberbullying characteristics which may influence emotion regulation negatively. Studies about emotions and emotion regulations in bystanders are s

Examining Patient- and Community-Level Factors Associated with Pediatric Mental Healthcare Access Within a Patient Navigation Program.

In 2021, national leaders in the United States declared a "national youth mental health crisis." Still, only 1-in-4 children receive adequate mental healthcare access. Patient Navigator Programs (PNPs) can improve children's referral-to-connection to mental health services. We examined patient- and community-level factors associated with pediatric mental healthcare access. Pediatric Support Services (PSS) is a PNP that triages mental and behavioral health referrals within a large health system in a southeastern state. This study analyzes PSS data from September 2017-March 2023 and Child Opport
