Peripheral arterial emboli that result from bacterial endocarditis may be silent or catastrophic. Cardiac surgical intervention may prevent embolism, but the guidelines for timing of intervention are unclear. An accepted approach is to intervene only if two episodes of peripheral embolism occur. Our recent experience suggests a more refined approach is in order. Eight children with active bacterial endocarditis have been treated with embolic complications. One patient with abdominal pain and GI bleeding was treated with heparin for multiple peripheral mesenteric emboli. Four patients had femor

Ascending spread of urethral pathogens may be the mechanisms of infection of the prostate and epididymis. Sexually transmitted organisms cause most epididymitis in young men. Although evidence is mounting to suggest that sexually transmitted organisms may cause prostatitis, data are insufficient at this time to base a therapeutic approach on this concept. The authors present approaches to the management of these two disorders.

BACKGROUND: Lameness in broiler chickens, frequently caused by bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO), poses a major challenge to intensive poultry production due to its adverse impact on animal welfare and farm economics. While Staphylococcus aureus has traditionally been considered the principal staphylococcal pathogen in poultry, coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are increasingly implicated in skeletal infections. This study aimed to characterize the phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance profiles of 93 CoNS isolates representing 12 Staphylococcus species. Isola

Foods can be contaminated by a wide range of microorganisms, originating from multiple sources within domestic kitchens. However, the role of flies and ants as carriers of bacteria in these environments remains poorly understood, and data on the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of insect-associated bacteria remain scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to identify Enterobacterales and Staphylococcus spp. recovered from flies and ants collected in domestic kitchens and to characterize the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of the isolates. Additionally, selected virulence genes were invest

Patients with Sézary syndrome (SS), a leukemic variant of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), are prone to Staphylococcus aureus infections and have a poor prognosis due to treatment resistance. Here, we report that S aureus and staphylococcal enterotoxins (SE) induce drug resistance in malignant T cells against therapeutics commonly used in CTCL. Supernatant from patient-derived, SE-producing S aureus and recombinant SE significantly inhibit cell death induced by histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor romidepsin in primary malignant T cells from patients with SS. Bacterial killing by engineered,

Nasally colonized staphylococci carry antibiotic resistance genes and may lead to serious opportunistic infections. We are investigating nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococci other than S. aureus (SOSA) among young volunteers in Egypt to determine their risk potential. Nasal swabs collected over 1 week in June 2019 from 196 volunteers were cultured for staphylococcus isolation. The participants were interviewed to assess sex, age, general health, hospitalization and personal hygiene habits. Identification was carried out using biochemical tests and VITEK 2 automated system.

As the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus infections is of worldwide concern, phenotype and genotype in prevalent MRSA strains require longitudinal investigation. In this study, the antibiotic resistance, virulence gene acquisition, and molecular type were determined on a large scale of nosocomial S. aureus strains in Southern China during 2009-2015. Bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility to 10 antibiotics were tested by Vitek-2. Virulence genes encoding staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEA, SEB, SEC, SED, and SEE), exfoliative toxins (ETA and ETB), Panton-Valentine leukocidin

Staphylococcus aureus are gram-positive bacteria responsible for a wide array of diseases, ranging from skin and soft tissue infections to more chronic illnesses such as toxic shock syndrome, osteomyelitis, and endocarditis. Vancomycin is currently one of the most effective antibiotics available in treating patients infected with methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), however the emergence of vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA), and more commonly vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA), threaten the future efficacy of vancomycin. Intermediate resistance to vancomycin occurs due to mutation
