Dog-ear collection, Z-plasty, and W-plasty are often performed for excision of dumbbell-shaped keloids; however, these procedures require additional incisions or excision of normal skin. Thus, an S-shaped wound closure technique was performed. The keloid lesions were extralesionally excised above the deep fascia, and the wound edges were shifted in opposite directions along the major axis to form an S-shape. The incision was closed by applying deep fascial sutures, subcutaneous sutures, and superficial sutures. Postoperative external beam radiation therapy was started within 6 hours after surg

BACKGROUND: This literature review is aimed at identifying the different methods for superficial and deep wound closure in total knee arthroplasty and evaluating their outcomes. We evaluated (1) closure time, (2) infection and other complication rates, and (3) local wound-related outcomes.
METHODS: A thorough search of the literature was performed using 3 electronic databases. Inclusion criteria included manuscripts that were written in English and available in full-text format. Reports were stratified into those that describe deep closure (7) and those that describe superficial closure (11).

Strabismus from third nerve palsy (3NP) is difficult to treat. Our goal was to explore factors associated with successful surgical outcomes in 3NP. Institutional records of all adult patients (>18 years) from 1988 to 2012 with 3NP who underwent strabismus surgery or botulinum toxin injections were retrospectively reviewed. Success was defined as absence of diplopia, vertical deviation ≤2 prism dioptres (PD), and horizontal deviation ≤10 PD. Fifty-six patients from four surgeons were included. Thirty (54%) were female; mean age was 48 (range: 20-80). Forty-four (79%) had unilateral 3NP; 9 (16%)

Crouzon syndrome is a debilitating congenital disorder involving abnormal craniofacial skeletal development caused by mutations in fibroblast growth factor receptor-2 (FGFR2). Phenotypic expression in humans exhibits an autosomal dominant pattern that commonly involves premature fusion of the coronal suture (craniosynostosis) and severe midface hypoplasia. To further investigate the biologic mechanisms by which the Crouzon syndrome-associated FGFR2(C342Y) mutation leads to abnormal craniofacial skeletal development, we created congenic BALB/c FGFR2(C342Y/+) mice. Here, we show that BALB/c FGFR

BACKGROUND: Intercostal nerve damage is often suggested to be the cause of pain after thoracotomy.
METHODS: This was a prospective randomized study of 120 patients who had posterolateral thoracotomy. They were equally divided into two groups, the first in which intercostal muscle flap and intracostal sutures were used, and the other group in which the usual pericostal sutures were used. These two groups were compared regarding operative time, rib fracture, postoperative pulmonary functions, time to ambulation, pain score in the first week, doses of analgesics injected in the epidural catheter

BACKGROUND: Skin adhesives provide an alternative to sutures for skin closure. The use of octyl-2-cyanoacrylate in blepharoplasty has been reported by some authors, but difficulties in applying the product and the real benefits of its use are still controversial.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to show a simple technique for closing the upper incision in blepharoplasty with octyl-2-cyanoacrylate instead of sutures and to discuss its benefits.
METHODS: Eight female patients who underwent blepharoplasty had the upper incision closed with octyl-2-cyanoacrylate, for a total of 16 eyelids

BACKGROUND: Ventral and incisional hernias remain a problem for surgeons with reported recurrence rates of 25-50% for open repairs. Laparoscopic approaches offer several theoretical advantages over open repairs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients undergoing a laparoscopic ventral hernia repair from April to December 2000 were prospectively entered in a database. Patients underwent repair with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene dual mesh. Full-thickness abdominal wall nonabsorbable sutures and 5-mm tacks were placed circumferentially.
RESULTS: Of 32 patients, 15 underwent incisional repair, 13

BACKGROUND: Sutureless surgery for strabismus eliminates the risk of perforating the ocular bulb in patients with extremely thin sclerae. Thus far, however, the results obtained with tissue adhesives such as the cyanoacrylates instead of sutures have been less than satisfactory.
METHODS: A new adhesive, octyl 2-cyanoacrylate, was tested in 36 rabbit eyes in which the superior rectus was recessed 5 mm. In 36 other eyes the same operation was performed using 5/0 Vicryl sutures. Animals were killed 1, 3, 5, 15, 30 and 45 days after surgery. One eye from each animal was used for histopathological

BACKGROUND: Extensor tendon injuries are a common condition that hand surgeons must be prepared to treat. The area of extensor tendon injury can traditionally be broken down into 9 zones. Physical examination is the best way to diagnose extensor tendon injury with a loss of active extension in the injured digit. The tenodesis effect may be utilized to aid in diagnosis: wrist flexion should cause passive extension at the metacarpophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal, and distal interphalangeal joints if the extensor tendon is in continuity.
DESCRIPTION: Repair of extensor tendon injuries depen
