Serum protein electrophoresis was performed in 681 patients (43 men and 638 women) with an initial diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis between April and November 1983. All patients whose thyroid size was estimated to be greater than 50 g underwent biopsy; 1 man was found to have thyroid prelymphoma, and 13 patients (4 men and 9 women) were found to have malignant lymphoma of the thyroid. Monoclonal gammopathy (M-component) was demonstrated in 5 of 667 patients (0.7%) with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (1 man and 4 women), 1 man with thyroid prelymphoma, and 3 of the 13 patients (23.1%) with maligna

Suppressor cell function of peripheral mononuclear cells has been examined in patients with Graves' disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and thyroid cancer, as well as in healthy subjects. Suppressor cell function was assessed through two methods: 1) measurement of enhanced blastogenesis after 24-h preculture and 2) concanavalin A-inducible suppressor activity. The results from the two tests were coincident and indicate that suppressor cell function was significantly decreased in the Graves' disease population but not changed in either the Hashimoto's thyroiditis or the thyroid cancer groups comp

Records of 92 patients operated on for thyroid diseases were reviewed. There were four histologic groups: adenoma-56 (61%), thyrotoxicosis-22 (24%), cancer-10 (11%) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis-4 (4%). Among the cold nodules, 9% were malignant. Routine frozen section examination revealed three cases of cancer and three other cases were missed but were discovered on permanent section examination. The type of operations were lobectomy with or without isthmusectomy, subtotal thyroidectomy and modified radical neck dissection. Postoperative complications included two thyroid crises, two recurrent l

Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is an inflammatory orbital disease associated with autoimmune thyroid disorders. Owing to the ambiguous nature of the pathogenesis, contemporary pharmacological treatment strategies predominantly involve the use of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants. However, the adverse effects associated with these agents in clinical practice necessitate further investigation into the disease's pathogenesis and the identification of novel therapeutic targets and pharmacological interventions. Recent studies suggest that ferroptosis, a novel form of regulated cell d

Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most common endocrine cancer today. The rising incidence of the differentiated papillary type cannot be entirely explained by early and meticulous diagnosis, since a proportion of large tumors has also been reported. In this review, we present the results of numerous investigations focused on possible factors causing increased TC incidence, such as chromosomal and genetic alterations, iodine intake, TSH level, autoimmune thyroid disease, gender, estrogen, obesity, lifestyle changes, and environmental pollutants. Up to now, only childhood exposure to ionizing radiatio

Thyrotoxicosis during pregnancy should be adequately managed and controlled to prevent maternal and fetal complications. The evaluation of thyroid function in pregnant women is challenged by the physiological adaptations associated with pregnancy, and the treatment with antithyroid drugs (ATD) raises concerns for the pregnant woman and the fetus. Thyrotoxicosis in pregnant women is mainly of autoimmune origin, and the measurement of thyroid stimulating hormone-receptor antibodies (TRAb) plays a key role. TRAb helps to distinguish the hyperthyroidism of Graves' disease from gestational hyperthy

Extranodal mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (ENMALT) marginal zone lymphomas may arise at any site of the body. The most frequent localizations other than gastrointestinal and eye are salivary gland, skin, lung and thyroid. These lymphomas usually arise in a setting of inflammation due to a persistent infection or autoimmune diseases such as Sjogren syndrome in salivary MALT lymphomas and Hashimoto's thryroiditis in thyroid lymphomas. They affect middle-aged patients with a female predominance when lymphoma arises in certain locations. Patients often present with localised stage I or II altho

The pathophysiological mechanism underlying Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is still unclear. Thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) are diagnostic hallmarks of HT. These IgG antibodies regulate the balance of immunologic tolerance and autoimmunity via Fcγ receptors (FcγRs). The aim of our study was to investigate the role of FcγRs in the pathogenesis of HT. The percentage of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from HT patients bearing FcγRII was significantly lower than that seen in healthy donors, and the mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) value of FcγRII on

Polyglandular auto-immune syndromes are uncommon constellation of organ specific auto-immune diseases, characterised by the existence of two or more endocrinopathies. Polyglandular autoimmune type II syndrome also known as Schmidt's syndrome is more common, comprising Addison's disease, auto-immune thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes mellitus and/or hypogonadism, pernicious anaemia, coeliac disease, vitiligo, hypophysitis, etc. Here a case of a 56-year-old man is reported with a prior history of hypothyroidism who presented with adrenal crisis. Further laboratory investigations revealed primary a

Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE) is a rare, poorly understood, autoimmune disease characterized by symptoms of acute or subacute encephalopathy associated with increased anti-thyroid antibody levels. Here, we report a case of a 14-year-old girl with HE and briefly review the literature. The patient presented with acute mental changes and seizures, but no evidence of infectious encephalitis. In the acute stage, the seizures did not respond to conventional antiepileptic drugs, including valproic acid, phenytoin, and topiramate. The clinical course was complicated by the development of acute psych

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (also called Wernicke's encephalopathy) is a potentially fatal, neuropsychiatric syndrome caused most frequently by thiamine deficiency. The three classic symptoms found together are confusion, ataxia and eyeball manifestations. Memory disturbances can also be symptoms. Wernicke's encephalopathy mainly results from alcohol abuse, but also from malnutrition, cancer, chronic dialysis, thyrotoxicosis and, in well-founded cases, encephalopathy associated with autoimmune thyroid disease (EAATD). The coexistence of many factors makes a proper diagnosis difficult, delays a

Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention are defined according to the timing of the preventive intervention in the natural history of a disease. Secondary prevention in Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) is challenging in the absence of reliable specific serum markers for subclinical GO that would allow an early diagnosis. Some risk factors for occurrence or progression of GO have been identified. Cigarette smoking, thyroid dysfunction and radioactive iodine (RAI) are known preventable risk factors. The list is probably much longer, and future research should be aimed at identifying more. Smoking c

The management of Graves' disease in a District General Hospital was audited. A local care pathway was designed, which was inclusive of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. This was then compared with consensus guidelines proposed by the Royal College of Physicians. Forty-six patients with Graves' disease attended the endocrine clinic. The diagnosis was based on clinical and biochemical features of autoimmune thyrotoxicosis, a raised thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibody (TRAB) and a diffusely increased uptake in thyroid technetium scan. They were treated for 18 months with antithyroid

Several autoimmune disorders have been associated with the diagnosis of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). We report on a 19-year-old male PSC patient with a history of ulcerative colitis who developed hyperthyroidism consistent with Graves' disease. In contrast to primary biliary cirrhosis, hyperthyroidism appears to be very uncommon in PSC patients. Nevertheless, the rarity of Graves' disease in young males, the presence of a human leucocyte antigen (HLA) phenotype often encountered in both Graves' disease and PSC and the presence of several autoantibodies suggest a common immunogenetic p

The nonviability of fertilized eggs or the death of the embryo is a frequent event (34 to 60%). They are called recurrent or habitual in the case of more than 2 consecutive abortions. Maternal etiologic factors are discussed: Endocrine disorders (sexual hormones, diabetes, thyroid function), uterine congenital anomalies (septale uterus), uterine tumors (fibromyoma) and uterine synechia formation, cervical incompetence, infections (i.e. mycoplasma infections, chlamydia infection, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus) and autoimmune-disease with antinuclear antibodies. BACKGROUND: Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), a known marker of renal function and protein catabolic status, is essential for inflammatory and metabolic dysregulation. There is currently little information available on the connection between BUN and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The purpose of this study was to look into the relationship between HT and BUN in T2DM patients.
METHODS: Two thousand fifty four adult T2DM patients from two hospitals were included in this cross-sectional analysis of data from the National Metabolic Management Center (MMC

Background: For decades, the ketogenic diet has been successfully used for the treatment of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. The mechanisms through which it affects metabolism are not fully understood, but the hormonal changes that occur during ketogenic nutrition are likely to play an important role. Objectives: To investigate the effect of the ketogenic diet on various hormones associated with obesity and the accompanying metabolic disorders in childhood. Methods: One hundred children aged 8-18 years with obesity were enrolled. After baseline anthropometric, biochemical, and

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is the prevailing form of autoimmune thyroiditis and the leading cause of hypothyroidism in iodine-sufficient regions worldwide. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation on HT through a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
METHODS: The databases searched included PubMed, and others. We included RCTs that the treatment group received vitamin D, while the control group received either a placebo or no treatment. The studies measured the baseline and endpoint levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], thyroid-sti

DIAGNOSIS: The diagnosis of Graves' disease is mainly based on ultrasonography and laboratory diagnostics. This includes the determination of the TSH value and the peripheral thyroid hormones. TSH receptor antibody (TRAb) measurement is highly sensitive and specific for the detection of Graves' disease (GD) and helps to distinguish from autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT). However, as recent studies show, some may AIT patients may also reveal TRAb.
THERAPY: Current guidelines recommend primarily the use of thiamazol/carbimazole in GD. Due to the comparatively higher hepatotoxicity, propylthiouracil

Recent evidence links rosacea to systemic disease, but there are not enough methodologic studies addressing this association in Asians. Our aim was to identify rosacea comorbidities in Koreans and establish a reference database. A multi-center, case-control study was performed where a total of 12,936 rosacea patients and 12,936 age- and sex-matched control subjects were identified from 2007 to 2018. Logistic regression was performed to find significant association between rosacea and Sjögren syndrome (odds ratio [OR] 2.05; 95% confidence interval, 1.40-3.00), systemic sclerosis (OR 6.56; 95% C
