Immunotactoid Glomerulopathy in a Patient With HIV and Anti-hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Positivity: A Unique Clinical Entity.

Immunotactoid glomerulopathy (ITG) is a rare glomerular disease characterized by organized immunoglobulin deposits forming microtubular structures on electron microscopy. While ITG has been individually associated with HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections, there are few case reports with concurrent HIV infection and anti-HCV antibody positivity. We report a 57-year-old Hispanic female with HIV infection since 2007 and positive anti-HCV antibodies who presented with nephrotic-range proteinuria (urine protein-to-creatinine ratio: 7,834 mg/gm), hematuria, and hypertension. Renal biopsy reve

Geographic diversity of human liver cancers mirrors global social inequalities.

Liver cancers show high interindividual and intratumor heterogeneity. Among them, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCCs) represents approximately 90% of liver cancers, followed by intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA; ~10 to 15%), childhood hepatoblastoma, angiosarcoma and hemangioendothelioma (< 1%). More than 80% of HCCs arise in a backdrop of chronic inflammatory liver diseases of diverse etiologies. These underlying liver diseases are major determinants of geographic diversity of HCCs. Across the world, substantial differences in the prevalence of chronic viral hepatitides, alcohol misuse, Metab

Telemental Healthcare and HIV Care: A National Study of US Veterans with HIV during COVID-19.

People with HIV often experience mental health disorders that can hinder engagement in HIV care. Mental health symptoms can be exacerbated during disruptive events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Telemental healthcare (i.e., synchronous audio/visual mental health treatment) expanded rapidly within the Veterans Health Administration in response to pandemic-related barriers and may play a role in facilitating HIV care engagement. This study examined whether receipt of telemental healthcare was associated with engagement in HIV care among Veterans with HIV (VWH) before and during the first two yea

Development of an enteric pathogen multiplex immunoassay to measure antibody responses in blood and saliva for integrated serology applications.

BACKGROUND: Enteric infections are a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, with the highest burden of disease in young children in low- and middle-income countries. Comprehensive profiling of enteric infections, which requires intensive sampling and molecular and culture-based detection methods, may miss recent and historical infections. High-throughput antibody-based testing of blood or non-invasive specimens like saliva can fill this gap, especially in vulnerable populations. METHODS: We developed a bead-based multiplex immunoassay (MIA) that includes enteric pathogen targets fro

Cholera in Nigeria: A review of outbreaks, trends, contributing factors, and public health responses.

Cholera remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, with recurrent outbreaks exacerbated by inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure, as well as conflict and displacement. This review examines cholera outbreaks in Nigeria from 2010 to 2024, analyzing epidemiological trends, contributing factors, and public health responses. Seasonal peaks during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding have consistently facilitated Vibrio cholerae transmission, with Northern regions disproportionately affected due to poor infrastructure and ongoing conflicts. Displacement int

Disentangling the Complex Relationships Between Autoimmune Diseases and Cancer Through Polygenic Risk Scores: Evidence from a Large Prospective Study.

Although prior studies have reported a link between autoimmunity and carcinogenesis, the roles of genetic factors and potential mediators involved in this process remain elusive. We constructed disease-specific and combined polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for 6 common autoimmune diseases (AIDs) (systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis [UC], and type 1 diabetes mellitus [T1D]) in the UK Biobank cohort. Compared to those without AID, AID patients at baseline had increased risks of overall cancer, hematological, digestive, and

Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression for Social Epidemiologic Research.

BACKGROUND: Little attention has been devoted to framing multiple continuous social variables as a "mixture" for social epidemiologic analysis. We propose using the Bayesian kernel machine regression analytic framework that yields univariate, bivariate, and overall exposure mixture effects. METHODS: Using data from the 2023 Survey of Racism and Public Health, we conducted a Bayesian kernel machine regression analysis to study several individual, social, and structural factors as an exposure mixture and their relationships with psychological distress among individuals with at least one police

Cold-related Mortality in US State and Private Prisons: A Case-Crossover Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cold temperatures are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular and respiratory disease mortality. Due to limited temperature regulation in prisons, incarcerated populations may be particularly vulnerable to cold-related mortality. METHODS: We analyzed mortality data in US prisons from 2001 to 2019. Using a case-crossover approach, we estimated the association of a 10 °F decrease in cold temperature and extreme cold (days below the 10th percentile) with the risk of total mortality and deaths from heart disease, respiratory disease, and suicide. We assessed effect modificat

A Systematic Review of the Existing Evidence on Early Year Interventions for Trauma and Violence Prevention.

Exposure to violence in early childhood is considered a public health issue and is a significant predictor of becoming a victim or perpetrator of violence later in life. There has been a significant increase in violence intervention and prevention programs that are available for children and young people; however, there are few evidence-based interventions for younger children. This review systematically explores the existing impact evidence for available intervention and prevention programs targeted at young children (ages 3-8) across the United States and United Kingdom. It also explores the
