Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) enable direct communication between the brain and computers. However, their long-term functionality remains … bricant-infused surface. This dual-functional design enables selective interaction with neurons and astrocytes while preventing nonspecific adhesion. Notably, high-quality single-unit neural signals were stably recorded for more than 12 months after implantation, demonstrating exceptional long-term recording performance. Integrating mechanical compatibility, …

Stroke is a serious disease that can lead to local neurological dysfunction and cause great harm to the patient's health due to blood cerebral circulation disorder. Synaptic pruning is critical for the normal development of the human brain, which makes the synaptic circuit completer and more efficient by removing redundant synapses. The complement system is considered a key player in synaptic loss and cognitive impairment in neurodegenerative disease. After stroke, the complement system is over-activated and complement proteins can be labeled on synapses. Microglia and astrocytes can recognize…

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) eosinophilia is associated with a narrow differential, primarily including parasitic and fungal infections, neoplasm, and chemical meningitis. It has rarely been reported in neuroinflammatory conditions including as a finding of CSF cytology in two autoimmune glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) astrocytopathy cases. Here we describe a case of autoimmune GFAP astrocytopathy with classic clinical and radiographic features as well as presence of eosinophils in the CSF. This case highlights a potential association of eosinophils in the CSF with autoimmune GFAP astrocyt

There are currently no non-invasive imaging methods available for astrogliosis assessment or mapping in the central nervous system despite i … m astrogliosis, and the demonstrated high spatial sensitivity and specificity in detecting reactive astrocytes at the individual level, and if reproduced in vivo, will significantly impact neuroimaging studies of injury, disease, repair and aging, in which astrogliosis has so far been an invisible process radiologically.

The neurovascular unit (NVU) is a highly organized multicellular system localized in the brain, formed by neuronal, glial (astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia) and vascular (endothelial cells and pericytes) cells. The blood-brain barrier, a complex and dynamic endothelial cell barrier in the brain microvasculature that separates the blood from the brain parenchyma, is a component of the NVU. In a variety of neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and stroke, dysfunctions of the NVU occurs. There is, however, a lack of knowledge regarding the NVU funct…

We herein report a 47-year-old man with autoimmune glial fibrillary acidic protein astrocytopathy (GFAP-A) revealed by periventricular radial linear enhancement on repeated brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). He presented with a history of headache and a fever followed by somnolence and worsening of consciousness. On admission (16 days from the onset), although lymphocytic pleocytosis and hypoglycorrhachia in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were noted, initial brain MRI demonstrated non-specific findings. At 30 days from the onset, repeated brain MRI revealed characteristic findings of GFAP-

A 61-year-old man who had suffered two episodes of generalized convulsion in a two-year period was admitted to our hospital because of progressive gait disturbance during the previous five months. Neurological examination revealed cognitive impairment, spasticity of the lower limbs, truncal ataxia, and dysautonomia including orthostatic hypotension, dysuria and hypohydrosis. Brain fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MRI detected high-signal-intensity lesions in the periventricular white matter and centrum semiovale, with punctate gadolinium (Gd) enhancement. Spinal MRI detected swollen

Methamphetamine (MA) is a extremely addictive psychostimulant drug with a significant abuse potential. Long-term MA exposure can induce neurotoxic effects through oxidative stress, mitochondrial functional impairment, endoplasmic reticulum stress, the activation of astrocytes and microglial cells, axonal transport barriers, autophagy, and apoptosis. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying MA-induced neurotoxicity remain unclear. MA abuse increases the chances of developing neurotoxic conditions such as Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurotoxic di…

Formation of a collagenous connective tissue scar after penetrating injuries to the brain or spinal cord has been described and investigated for well over 100 years. However, it was studied almost exclusively in the context of penetrating injuries that resulted in infiltration of meningeal fibroblasts, which raised doubts about translational applicability to most CNS injuries where the meninges remain intact. Recent studies demonstrating the perivascular niche as a source of fibroblasts have debunked the traditional view that a fibrotic scar only forms after penetrating lesions that tear the m

BACKGROUND: Infection with Toxoplasma gondii is thought to damage the brain and be a risk factor for neurological and psychotic disorders. T … with T. gondii were subjected to RNA sequencing. The expression levels of some genes, especially in astrocytes and microglia, were altered by CCR5-deficiency during T. gondii infection, and the gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis revealed an enhanced immune response in the brain cells. The expression levels of genes which were …

In this article, we suggest that the glymphatic system of the brain can play an important role in the pathogenesis of high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE). Water enters the intercellular space of the brain primarily through aquaporin-4 (AQP-4) water channels, the main component of the glymphatic system, whereas acetazolamide, pharmacological agent used in the prevention of HACE, is the blocker of the AQP-4 molecule. In animal experiments, cerebral edema caused by hypobaric hypoxia was associated with an increased expression of AQP-4 by astrocytes. Also, the glymphatic system is primarily active…

Huntington's disease (HD) is a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder caused by expended CAG repeats in the Huntingtin (Htt) gene. The resultant mutant Htt (mHtt) forms aggregates in neurons and causes neuronal dysfunctions. The major characteristic of HD is the selective loss of neurons in the striatum and cortex, which leads to movement disorders, dementia, and eventual death. Expression of mHtt was also found in non-neuronal cells in the brain, suggesting non-cell-autonomous neurotoxicity in HD. As was documented in many different neurodegenerative disorders, elevated inflammatory responses

The levels of autoantibodies (AAB) to nerve growth factor (NGF) and to S-100 protein were examined in blood of both mentally normal girls and girls with Rett's syndrome (RS). The elevated titer of anti-NGF AAB, but not of anti-S-100 AAB was determined in the blood of patients with RS. There was relative individual stability of anti-NGF AAB level which didn't depend on the stage of the disease. At the same time, a reverse correlation was found between the level of these antibodies and severity of the disease: the mild form of the disease (with relative preservation of the speech elements and lo

Specifically, in hum … he effect of LPS-induced Quin production by HIV-infected monocytes was not altered by primary human astrocytes. These data suggest that Quin levels seen in HIV dementia are a reflection of macrophage/ microglial activation seen during advanced clinical disease.
