Advances in the clinical translation of nanotechnology.

The use of novel materials in the nano-scale size range for applications in devices, drugs and diagnostic agents comes with a number of new opportunities, and also serious challenges to human applications. The larger size of particulate-based agents, as compared to traditional drugs, allows for the significant advantages of multivalency and multi-functionality. However, the human use of nanomaterials requires a thorough understanding of the biocompatibility of the synthetic molecules and their complex pharmacology. Possible toxicities created by the unusual properties of the nanoparticles are

Functionalized Silica-Coated Metallic Replicas of Intracellular Protein Assemblies.

To replicate hierarchical biological architectures, biotemplating leverages diverse biological structures as templates for inorganic materials. Among the various inorganic materials explored in biotemplating, silica is an attractive material because of its stability and biocompatibility. However, existing biotemplating methods are largely nonselective, yielding silica replicas of bulk biological specimens. Here, we report an approach for selective materialization of targeted protein-associated architectures from cells and tissue slices, enabling recovery of the resulting silicified structures

Electrospun Core-Shell Bioadhesive Nanofiber Sheets Enable Durable Pulmonary Air Leak Sealing Under Wet and Dynamic Conditions.

Pulmonary air leak is the most common complication following lung surgery. Most materials used for pulmonary fistula closure rely on fibrin network-mediated adhesion. However, on the moist and dynamically deforming lung surface, these materials often fail to provide sufficient adhesion, and postoperative air leaks remain a major clinical concern. Since these materials are biologically derived, concerns regarding biosafety risks and high production costs persist. To address these limitations, this study develops a novel closure material that integrates biocompatibility, pressure resistance, tis

Recent advances in ROS-modulating materials for sepsis treatment.

Sepsis is a life-threatening systemic inflammatory response syndrome caused by uncontrolled immune reactions to infection. During its onset, immune cells produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) as critical signaling mediators to activate immune responses and coordinate antimicrobial defense. Moderate ROS level is essential for immune activation, whereas its excessive accumulation disrupts redox homeostasis, induces oxidative injury, and accelerates multi-organ failure. Advances in material science and nanotechnology have enabled the development of ROS-modulating materials that regulate oxidative

Retrospective Study of Maxillary Sinus Augmentation Using Demineralized Tooth Block Bone for Dental Implant.

(1) Background: When placing implants in the maxillary posterior region with insufficient alveolar bone, a maxillary sinus elevation is necessary. Autogenous bone, though biologically ideal, poses risks and discomfort due to donor site harvesting. Block-type autogenous tooth bone graft material, made from the patient's own extracted tooth, offers similar biological stability without these drawbacks. (2) Methods: This study observed the progress of 19 implant patients who were treated with maxillary sinus elevation procedures using block-type autogenous tooth bone graft material at the Daegu Ca

Bifunctional electrode materials: Enhancing microbial fuel cell efficiency with 3D hierarchical porous Fe3O4/Fe-N-C structures.

The rational development of high-performance anode and cathode electrodes for microbial fuel cells (MFCs) is crucial for enhancing MFC performance. However, complex synthesis methods and single-performance electrode materials hinder their large-scale implementation. Here, three-dimensional hierarchical porous (3DHP) Fe3O4/Fe-N-C composites were prepared via the hard template method. Notably, Fe3O4/Fe-N-C-0.04-600 demonstrated uniformly dispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles and abundant Fe-Nx and pyridinic nitrogen, showing excellent catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with a half

Cascade reaction triggering and photothermal AuNPs@MIL MOFs doped intraocular lens for enhanced posterior capsular opacification prevention.

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is the most common complication after cataract surgery. Present strategies can't meet the clinical needs of long-term prevention. This research reports a novel intraocular lens (IOL) bulk material with high biocompatibility and synergistic therapy. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) doped MIL-101-NH2 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (AuNPs@MIL) was firstly fabricated via in situ reductions. Then the functionalized MOFs were uniformly mixed with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy) ethyl acrylate (EA) to form the nanoparticle doped polymer (AuNPs@MIL-

Evaluation of stress and strain on mandible caused using "All-on-Four" system from PEEK in hybrid prosthesis: finite-element analysis.

Hybrid prostheses have recently been used as suitable treatment alternatives for edentulous individuals to restore the mastication mechanism. These prostheses utilize "All on four" concept, in which four implants are inserted into the jaw bone, and supported by a bar. Titanium is usually used in the fabrication of "All on four" parts due to its good mechanical properties. However, it has many drawbacks including esthetic impairment, casting issues, hypersensitivity reactions, stress shielding, and incompatibility with imaging techniques. These drawbacks have prompted researchers to find altern

Monolithic 3D Printing of Origami-Inspired Soft Robotics from Sustainable Bio-Based Resin.

Soft robotics has gained significant attention for its potential to deliver safe, adaptable, and biocompatible machines, by embracing the mechanical compliance of soft materials. However, the manufacture of soft robotic devices and machines still largely relies on petroleum-based polymers. Furthermore, in light-induced 3D printing, a key technology for fabricating complex 3D monolithic soft robots, non-sustainable resins remain predominant. This work addresses this issue by developing a photocurable bio-based resin to monolithically fabricate soft robots. We formulate a resin using soybean oil

Anti-Inflammatory and Mineralization Effects of an ASP/PLGA-ASP/ACP/PLLA-PLGA Composite Membrane as a Dental Pulp Capping Agent.

Dental pulp is essential for the development and long-term preservation of teeth. Dental trauma and caries often lead to pulp inflammation. Vital pulp therapy using dental pulp-capping materials is an approach to preserving the vitality of injured dental pulp. Most pulp-capping materials used in clinics have good biocompatibility to promote mineralization, but their anti-inflammatory effect is weak. Therefore, the failure rate will increase when dental pulp inflammation is severe. The present study developed an amorphous calcium phosphate/poly (L-lactic acid)-poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) mem

Elucidation of the Structure Determinants for the Delivery Process of Phospholipid-Based Nanomaterials Using a Combinatorial Nanoparticle Library Approach.

Phospholipids are biocompatible and versatile materials commonly used in the design of nanodelivery systems. However, the relationship between the structural characteristics of phospholipids and the physiological behavior of lipid-based nanoparticles remains inadequately understood. To explore the key structural features influencing efficient and targeted delivery, we created a library of phospholipid-coated gold nanoparticles (Lip@AuNPs), comprising 12 distinct formulations. These nanoparticles varied systematically in their headgroups (PA, PS, PC, and PE) and aliphatic chain lengths (6:0, 12

Ultrasound Wirelessly Controlled Electrically Responsive Implantable Drug Delivery System for Enhanced Tumor Therapy.

Implantable controlled local drug delivery offers many advantages over systemic delivery. However, wirelessly controlling drug release from implanted devices via exogenous stimulation remains challenging. Herein, an ultrasound wirelessly controlled electrically responsive implantable drug delivery system (UI-TENG-IDDS) is proposed, which consists of an ultrasound-driven implantable triboelectric nanogenerator (UI-TENG) and an electrically responsive drug reservoir. When ultrasound is applied to the skin, it induces high-frequency vibrations in the UI-TENG, generating pulsed electrical output (
