MICA*019 Allele and Soluble MICA as Biomarkers for Ankylosing Spondylitis in Taiwanese.

MICA (major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related gene A) interacts with NKG2D on immune cells to regulate host immune responses. We aimed to determine whether MICA alleles are associated with AS susceptibility in Taiwanese. MICA alleles were determined through haplotype analyses of major MICA coding SNP (cSNP) data from 895 AS patients and 896 normal healthy controls in Taiwan. The distributions of MICA alleles were compared between AS patients and normal healthy controls and among AS patients, stratified by clinical characteristics. ELISA was used to determine soluble MICA (sMICA)

Current and potential immunohistochemical biomarkers for prognosis and therapeutic stratification of breast carcinoma.

The identification of biomarkers on cancer tissue samples could be obtained through several technologies. In this setting, the immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization are accessible in most pathology laboratories. Particularly, immunohistochemistry can be used not only for diagnostic issues, but also to define prognostic classes and to define response to specific therapies. Particularly the last applications have been firstly developed in the breast cancer pathology. In addition, the development of molecular classification proposed some prognostic/predictive classes that could be easily…

Expanding the search for genetic biomarkers of Parkinson's disease into the living brain.

Altered gene expression related to Parkinson's Disease (PD) has not been described in the living brain, yet this information may support novel discovery pertinent to disease pathophysiology and treatment. This study compared the transcriptome in brain biopsies obtained from living PD and Control patients. To evaluate the novelty of this data, a comprehensive literature review also compared differentially expressed gene (DEGs) identified in the current study with those reported in PD cadaveric brain and peripheral tissues. RNA was extracted from rapidly cryopreserved frontal lobe specimens coll

Bioinformatics Analysis and Identification of Underlying Biomarkers Potentially Linking Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma.

BACKGROUND Rhinitis is the most common clinical manifestation of allergy, affecting more than 400 million people around the world. Rhinitis increases the risk of developing bronchial hyper-responsiveness and asthma. Previous studies have shown that rhinitis is closely related with the physiology, pathology, and pathogenesis of asthma. We analyzed co-expressed genes to explore the relationships between rhinitis and asthma and to find biomarkers of comorbid rhinitis and asthma. MATERIAL AND METHODS Asthma- and rhinitis-related differentially-expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by bioinformati…

Novel Perspectives Regarding the Pathology, Inflammation, and Biomarkers of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is an acute inflammation of the lung resulting from damage to the alveolar-capillary membrane, and it is diagnosed using a combination of clinical and physiological variables. ARDS develops in approximately 10% of hospitalised patients with pneumonia and has a mortality rate of approximately 40%. Recent research has identified several biomarkers associated with ARDS pathophysiology, and these may be useful for diagnosing and monitoring ARDS. They may also highlight potential therapeutic targets. This review summarises our current understanding of thos…

Omics-derived hepatocellular carcinoma risk biomarkers for precision care of chronic liver diseases.

Precise hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk prediction will play increasingly important roles with the contemporary HCC etiologies, that is, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and resolved hepatitis C virus infection. Because the HCC incidence rate in this emerging patient population is relatively low (~1% per year), identification of a subset of patients at the highest risk is critical to concentrate the effort and resources of regular HCC screening to those who most need it. Omics profiling has been derived using several candidate HCC risk biomarkers, which could refine HCC screening by enabl…

Tracking the potential involvement of metabolic disease in Alzheimer's disease-Biomarkers and beyond.

There is a vast literature linking systemic metabolic conditions to dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Advances in in vivo measurements of AD neuropathology using brain imaging, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and/or blood biomarkers have led to research in AD that uses in vivo biomarkers as outcomes, focusing primarily on amyloid, tau, and neurodegeneration as constructs. Studies of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and AD biomarkers seem to show that T2DM is not related to amyloid deposition, but is related to neurodegeneration and tau deposition. There is a dearth of studies examining adipo…
