Infected primary paraspinal hydatidosis with water lily sign.

BACKGROUND: Primary muscular hydatidosis is extremely rare, and the diagnosis of the infected muscular hydatid cyst can be difficult due to atypical clinical and radiological findings. CASE REPORT: We present herein an interesting case of a 24-year-old man with primary infected muscular hydatid cyst located in the paraspinal muscles eroding the right lamina of C6 vertebra that was diagnosed with water lily sign on computed tomography. CONCLUSION: Water lily sign is a pathognomonic imaging finding for hydatidosis, and defined when free-floating endocyst is seen. Cyst hydatid should always be

Odebode-Agaja adult cervical traction device.

This technical note describes a new simple, cheap and affordable adult cervical traction device that is especially suitable for use in resource-poor third world countries because of its cost-effectiveness. While the widely used imported Gardner-Wells tongs cost over N250,000 (Nigerian) naira (approximately $1630 USD), the new equally effective, durable and locally readily available Odebode-Agaja traction device sells for N35,000 naira (approximately $220 USD). The device does not require scalp incision or skull drilling. It is designed for bedside application in patients with cervical spine in

Percutaneous screw fixation for traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis using iso-C3D fluoroscopy-assisted navigation (case report).

INTRODUCTION: Stable hangman's fractures are usually treated with a Halo vest fixation; however, this is not always effective in patients with polytrauma. These patients benefit from minimally invasive surgery because it allows for early rehabilitation and reduced nursing care. This is the case report on percutaneous screw fixation using three dimensional fluoroscopy-assisted navigation in a patient with polytrauma and a hangman's fracture. CASE REPORT: The patient was a 69-year-old woman involved in a traffic accident. Radiographs and CT showed bilateral fractures through the neural arch at

Surgical results and complications in a series of 71 consecutive cervical spondylotic corpectomies.

BACKGROUND: Cervical corpectomy is a common procedure in spondylosis. It is normally a well-tolerated surgery and clinical improvement is widely described. However, it is associated with potential risky complications (subsidence, clinical deterioration, vertebral artery injury...); thus, a judicious surgical indication and a good technique are required. METHODS: We revised retrospectively the clinical evolution and complications of 71 spondylotic corpectomies in a series of 100 consecutive patients operated on due to different ethiological causes from January 2001 to September 2007 at our hos

The ventrolateral upper cervical cell group in cat projects to all rostrocaudal levels of the periaqueductal gray matter.

The lateral ventral horn of the upper cervical (C(1-3vl)) cord in rat, cat and monkey contains many cells that project to the periaqueductal gray matter (PAG). Until now it was assumed that these cells only project to the ventrolateral part of the caudal PAG. Because the ventrolateral caudal PAG is involved in quiescence and hypotension, it was hypothesized that the C(1-3vl)-PAG projecting cells play a role in immobility behavior, possibly activated by neck muscle afferents. However, in the present anterograde and retrograde study in cat we showed that C(1-3vl) cells do not only target the cau

High-resolution MR imaging of the cervical arterial wall: what the radiologist needs to know.

The emergence of high-resolution rapid imaging methods has enabled magnetic resonance (MR) imagers to noninvasively image the fine internal structure of cervical arterial walls. In this article, a comprehensive guide to performing high-resolution MR imaging of cervical arteries is provided, including the choice of coils, sequences, and imaging parameters, as well as tips for optimal image quality. Explanations and illustrations are given of using high-resolution MR imaging to quantify plaque volume, determine atherosclerotic plaque burden, depict plaque composition, and ultimately identify uns

Spinal cord injury without radiological abnormality in an infant with delayed presentation of symptoms after a minor injury.

STUDY DESIGN: We present a very rare case of an infant with delayed presentation of spinal cord injury without radiologic abnormality (SCIWORA) after a minor injury. OBJECTIVE: To emphasize the importance of spinal evaluation with MRI in selected cases, even after minor injuries, especially in infants. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: SCIWORA arises mainly in infants and children during accidental trauma or after sport injury. However, it has been very rare for a 6-day-delayed infant SCIWORA after a minor injury. METHODS: An infant presented with transient nausea and vomiting after falling from

Retromandibular fossa approach to the high cervical internal carotid artery: an anatomic study.

OBJECTIVE: Access to the high cervical internal carotid artery (ICA) is technically challenging for the treatment of lesions in and around this region. The aims of this study were to analyze the efficacy of approaching the high cervical ICA through the retromandibular fossa and to compare preauricular and postauricular incisions. In addition, the relevant neural and vascular structures of this region are demonstrated in cadaveric dissections. METHODS: The retromandibular fossa approach was performed in four arterial and venous latex-injected cadaveric heads and necks (eight sides) via preauri

Cervical myelomeningocele in adulthood: case report.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical myelomeningocele is an extremely rare condition, accounting for only 1 to 5% of all neural tube defects. These lesions are usually diagnosed in childhood. Here, we report a case of a cervical myelomeningocele diagnosed and treated in adulthood. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old man presented with a 3-year history of progressing weakness and paresthesia in his upper limbs. Physical examination revealed a posterior midline neck mass covered with normal skin. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a soft-tissue mass tethering the cord by a stalk extending from the dorsal spinal

Atypical cervical spondylotic myelopathy mimicking intramedullary tumor.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report and a review of the literature. OBJECTIVE: We report the case of a young man with a short course of progressive cervical myelopathy (CM). Cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a stenosis of the cervical spinal canal at C4-C6 and an atypically enlarged intramedullary high intensity extending from C1-T1 (T2-weighted) with contrast enhancement at C4-C5 (T1-weighted). Neurologic and radiologic diagnosis therefore favored a tumor of the spinal cord. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: CM is a clinical diagnosis of mostly degenerative origin in older patients that fe

[Unusual suicide by mechanical neck compression].

A 36-year-old man was found dead with his neck being jammed between the hydraulic tail lift and the side wall of a truck. Based on the investigations, the technical facilities of the tail lift, the results of the postmortem examination and the autopsy it could be demonstrated that the victim, who suffered drom depression, had intentionally brought himself into this position and committed suicide by compression of the neck. The pathomorphological findings and the technical reconstruction of this unusual death are presented.
