A tale of orbital cellulitis and retinopathy of prematurity in an infant: First case report.

PURPOSE: Orbital cellulitis is an infectious pathology affecting fat and muscles behind the orbital septum. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an abnormal retinal blood vessel proliferation affective preterm low birth weight infants. Here we report the first case report of a 4-month-old infant who presented to our outpatient setting with orbital cellulitis and bilateral ROP sequelae. CASE REPORT: A 4-month-old female infant was brought by her mother to the OPD with sudden onset redness, discharge, and swelling in the right eye accompanied by fever for 1 day. The child was born preterm at 8 m

Intimate partner violence and growth outcomes through infancy: A longitudinal investigation of multiple mediators in a South African birth cohort.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been linked to poor fetal and infant growth. However, factors underlying this relationship are not well understood, particularly in the postnatal time period. In a South African cohort, we investigated (1) associations between IPV in pregnancy and growth at birth as well as postnatal IPV and child growth at 12 months and (2) whether maternal depression, tobacco or alcohol use or infant hospitalizations mediated IPV-growth relationships. Mothers were enrolled in pregnancy. Maternal IPV was measured during pregnancy and 10 weeks postpartum; depression, alcohol

Mental health and use of health care services in opioid-exposed school-aged children compared to foster children.

Given the concerns raised regarding the effects of prenatal exposure to methadone and buprenorphine on the developmental outcomes of the children, this study assessed mental health and use of services in a national sample of school-aged children (N = 78) born to women enrolled in opioid maintenance treatment during pregnancy, compared with a group of foster children (N = 140). The majority of the opioid-exposed children lived with their birth parent(s) at the time of assessment (N = 62), while 16 lived in foster homes. Caregivers completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and

Mediation of the association between maternal pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity and childhood overweight/obesity by birth anthropometry.

The mechanism through which developmental programming of offspring overweight/obesity following in utero exposure to maternal overweight/obesity operates is unknown but may operate through biologic pathways involving offspring anthropometry at birth. Thus, we sought to examine to what extent the association between in utero exposure to maternal overweight/obesity and childhood overweight/obesity is mediated by birth anthropometry. Analyses were conducted on a retrospective cohort with data obtained from one hospital system. A natural effects model framework was used to estimate the natural dir

Specific relations of dimensional anxiety and manifest anxiety disorders during pregnancy with difficult early infant temperament: a longitudinal cohort study.

Anxiety in the antenatal period is a common experience, associated with adverse consequences for mother and child. Specific types of prenatal anxiety may have unique associations with infant temperament. This study examines the prospective relationships between general prenatal anxiety, fear of childbirth, and specific prenatal anxiety disorders and early infant temperament 8 weeks postpartum. Data were derived from the Akershus Birth Cohort (ABC), a longitudinal cohort study which targeted all women scheduled to give birth at Akershus University Hospital, Norway. Psychometric measures pertain

Liver stiffness and thrombin generation in compensated cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Decompensated cirrhosis is associated with coagulation abnormalities that can increase the risk of thrombosis and bleeding. It is unclear precisely when these abnormalities arise and whether they are exacerbated as compensated cirrhosis progresses. Transient elastography using FibroScan generates liver stiffness measurements (LSM) that associate with portal hypertension, clinical outcomes and provides prognostic information at an earlier stage than traditional liver function scores eg, MELD score. OBJECTIVE: To characterize thrombin generation in patients with compensated cirrhosi

Atypical neuroimaging findings in patients with acquired hepatocerebral degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Acquired hepatocerebral degeneration (AHD) is now widely recognized by physicians. Although hyperintensity in the bilateral globus pallidus in T1-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRIs) are characteristic neuroimaging findings, accumulating reports indicate that atypical neuroimaging findings are not rare. This study aimed to describe the spectrum of atypical neuroimaging findings and related factors in patients with AHD. METHODS: From February 2017 to January 2019, a retrospective study was conducted of 28 patients with AHD in the Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae Carriage With De Novo Macrolide-Resistance and Breakthrough Pneumonia.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia is prevalent in children and can be followed by upper airway carriage for months. Treatment of M pneumoniae pneumonia with macrolides is widespread and can lead to the development of macrolide resistance. The clinical consequences of chronic M pneumoniae carriage are unknown. In this article, we describe a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who developed macrolide-susceptible M pneumoniae pneumonia confirmed by nasopharyngeal secretions polymerase chain reaction and culture with good response to azithromycin. Five months later, the patient developed another
