PURPOSE: To characterize short-term changes induced by pars plana vitrectomy on anterior segment depth and lens thickness by means of high-frequency ultrasound biomicroscopy.

In humans, haploinsufficiency of either SOX2 or PAX6 is associated with microphthalmia, anophthalmia or aniridia. BACKGROUND: To describe the utility of ultrasound biomicroscopy in diagnosing multiple bilateral iridociliary cysts and to determine the clinical significance of this condition.

Somatostatin (SST) is a biologically active peptide produced in neuroendocrine cells. In the present study, we provide evidence of pro-SST and SST receptor (SSTR1 and 2A) mRNA expression in ocular ciliary epithelium (CE). The purpose of the case study was to evaluate the remote consequences of a complex of laser and repeated surgical sclerorestorative procedures made in progressing myopia and its complications. Three hundred and forty-six children, aged 8-10, with rapidly progressing uncomplicated myopia of 4.25 to 9.5 D were shared between 2 groups. Two hundred and forty patients of the experimental group were made sclerorestorative procedures and transscleral low-energy laser stimulation of the ciliary muscle by means of infrared laser MACDEL-09. No such treatment was applied to patients of the control group.

1. The giant presynaptic terminal of chick ciliary ganglion was used to examine how protein kinase C (PKC) modulates neurotransmitter release. Cholinergic excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) were recorded under whole-cell voltage clamp. 2. Although the EPSC was potentiated by phorbol ester (phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate, PMA; 0.1 microM) in a sustained manner, the nicotine-induced current was unaffected. PMA increased the quantal content to 2.4 +/- 0.4 (n = 9) of control without changing the quantal size. 3. The inactive isoform of PMA, 4alpha-PMA, showed no significant effect on EPSCs.

We studied in this work the compounds which affect the contraction of ciliary muscle and are potential ocular hypotensive drugs, and second messengers produced by the compounds. Using second-passaged porcine cultured ciliary muscle, single cell contraction was used for assay. Cell contraction by carbachol was affected by isobutyl methylxanthine, forskolin, dibutyryl cGMP and sodium nitroprusside (SNP).
