The molecular mechanism of nitric oxide in memory consolidation and its role in the pathogenesis of memory-related disorders.

Memory is a dynamic process of encoding, storing, and retrieving information. It includes sensory, short-term, and long-term memory, each with unique characteristics. Nitric oxide (NO) is a biological messenger synthesized on demand by neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) through a biochemical process initiated by glutamate binding to NMDA receptors, causing membrane depolarization and calcium influx. NO is known to regulate many signaling pathways including those related to memory consolidation. To throw light on the precise molecular mechanism of nitric oxide (NO) in memory consolidation an

Caregiving concerns and clinical characteristics across neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular disorders in the Ontario neurodegenerative disease research initiative.

OBJECTIVES: Caregiving burdens are a substantial concern in the clinical care of persons with neurodegenerative disorders. In the Ontario Neurodegenerative Disease Research Initiative, we used the Zarit's Burden Interview (ZBI) to examine: (1) the types of burdens captured by the ZBI in a cross-disorder sample of neurodegenerative conditions (2) whether there are categorical or disorder-specific effects on caregiving burdens, and (3) which demographic, clinical, and cognitive measures are related to burden(s) in neurodegenerative disorders? METHODS/DESIGN: N = 504 participants and their study

The effect of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on suicidal thoughts and interleukin-6 levels in depressed adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is the leading cause of death among adolescents worldwide and has serious implications for socio-economic development. Some studies have found that suicide attempts and suicidal thoughts are more likely to occur in adolescents with depression. In depressed adolescents, cognitive function is often significantly impaired. The cognitive function of depressed adolescents is mainly characterized by the following aspects: first, the executive function is impaired; Executive function refers to the ability of individuals to control and regulate cognitive processes when completing

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on elderly with neurocognitive disorders.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic outburst, numerous studies have reported on the holistic approach of the disease, which has negative consequences on physical and mental health as well as short- and long-term effects on cognition, independently of age. The context of the pandemic brought significant demands on public health systems, leading to restrictive measures against coronavirus expansion (quarantines, physical distancing policies, etc.). Such measures are reported to increase perceived loneliness and helplessness and may exacerbate feelings of emotional distress.1 Elderly diagnosed with neuro

Treatment of OCD in a young person: Using the C in CBT.

Evidence for using cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in young people emphasizes the use of exposure with response prevention (ERP) as the key ingredient. CBT with a cognitive focus is used more often in adults, and comparatively there is less evidence for its use with young people. Although a significant proportion of young people with OCD respond well to CBT using ERP, a subset does not. Therefore, there is a need to consider alternative approaches. This case study describes the treatment of a 15-year-old girl with severe OCD using a c

Developmental origins of cognitive vulnerabilities to depression: review of processes contributing to stability and change across time.

Cognitive theories of depression have been shown to be potent predictors of future increases in depressive symptoms and disorder in children, adolescents, and adults. This article focuses on potential developmental origins of the main cognitive vulnerabilities, including dysfunctional attitudes, negative cognitive style, and rumination. We selectively review processes and factors that have been hypothesized to contribute to the emergence and stabilization of these cognitive risk factors. This review focuses on genetic factors, temperament, parents and peers as salient interpersonal influences,

[Structural and functional neuroanatomy of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)].

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common and impairing neuropsychiatric disorder with preschool onset. ADHD occurs in approximately 3-9% of the childhood population. There is a much higher incidence rate in boys who are around three times more likely than girls to be diagnosed. Approximately 30-60% of individuals diagnosed with ADHD in youth have symptoms that persist into adulthood. LITERATURE FINDINGS: Three subtypes of the disorder have been proposed in the current clinical view of ADHD: inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive and combined type. Numerous problem

Validity and reliability of the persian version of the modified telephone interview for cognitive status among community-dwelling older adults in Iran.

UNLABELLED: Due to the increase in the population of the elderly, there is a growing trend in some diseases such as cognitive disorders (dementia) which are common in this era, and the diagnosis and treatment of this disease are still facing challenges. Therefore, early identification of cognitive disorders is of particular importance. In this regard, the use of any tool or cognitive tests may not be enough to diagnose dementia in the early stages and a special tool is needed. OBJECTIVE: The validity and reliability of the Persian version of the Modified Telephone Interview for Cognitive Stat

Circulating plasma-derived extracellular vesicles expressing bone and kidney markers are associated with neurocognitive impairment in people living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Although effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) has improved the life expectancy of people with HIV (PWH), the prevalence of milder forms of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) persist, and it is associated with systemic and neuro-inflammatory processes that could impact other organ systems. However, the complex signaling mechanisms between the bone-kidney systems and the brain in HAND remain unknown. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a potential role in inter-organ communication and are involved in regulating cell activity in distant tissues. In this study, we examined

[The relationship of carotid artery disease with mental and neurocognitive disorders].

Carotid stenosis constitutes a common vascular disease that significantly affects cerebral blood flow and thus is associated with patients' cognitive functions. Carotid revascularization techniques [carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS)] may benefit cognition, though there are opposing findings, reporting an apparent decrement in cognitive function, no effect, or an apparent improvement after revascularization. A great number of studies are trying to evaluate the effect of carotid revascularization (CEA, CAS) on patients' cognitive functions, as well as on their psycho

Visual Dysfunction Predicts Cognitive Impairment and White Matter Degeneration in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Visual dysfunction predicts dementia in Parkinson's disease (PD), but whether this translates to structural change is not known. The objectives of this study were to identify longitudinal white matter changes in patients with Parkinson's disease and low visual function and also in those who developed mild cognitive impairment. METHODS: We used fixel-based analysis to examine longitudinal white matter change in PD. Diffusion MRI and clinical assessments were performed in 77 patients at baseline (22 low visual function/55 intact vision and 13 PD-mild cognitive impairment/51 normal c

Development of a Brief Screen to Detect Cognitive Impairment in Older Adults: The QuickSort.

BACKGROUND: Sorting tests detect cognitive decline in older adults who have a neurodegenerative disorder, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Although equally effective at detecting impairment as other cognitive screens (e.g. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE)), sorting tests are not commonly used in this context. This study examines the QuickSort, which is a new brief sorting test that is designed to screen older adults for cognitive impairment. DESIGN: Observational cohort study. SETTING: General community and inpatients, Australia. PARTICIPANTS: Older (≥60 years) community-dwe

Incentive-related modulation of cognitive control in healthy, anxious, and depressed adolescents: development and psychopathology related differences.

BACKGROUND: Developmental changes in cognitive and affective processes contribute to adolescent risk-taking behavior, emotional intensification, and psychopathology. The current study examined adolescent development of cognitive control processes and their modulation by incentive, in health and psychopathology. Predictions include 1) better cognitive control in adults than adolescents, and in healthy adolescents than anxious and depressed adolescents, and 2) a stronger influence of incentives in adolescents than adults, and in healthy adolescents than their depressed and anxious counterparts.

Dynamics of Cognitive Impairment in MCI Patients over a Three-Year Period: The Informative Role of Blood Biomarkers, Neuroimaging, and Genetic Factors.

Given the high growth rates of cognitive decline among the elderly population and the lack of effective etiological treatments, early diagnosis of cognitive impairment progression is an imperative task for modern science and medicine. It is of particular interest to identify predictors of an unfavorable subsequent course of cognitive disorders, specifically, rapid progression. Our study assessed the informative role of various risk factors on the dynamics of cognitive impairment among mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients. The study included patients with MCI (N = 338) who underwent neurops

Distinct and Combined Cognitive Profiles Associated With Depression and Anxiety in Patients With Early Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive impairment is a major nonmotor manifestation of Parkinson's disease (PD), and mood disorders, including depression and anxiety, are being increasingly recognized as potentially modifiable contributors to cognitive decline. However, studies simultaneously evaluating the individual and combined effects of depression and anxiety on specific cognitive domains in PD remain limited. METHODS: One hundred forty-nine patients with early- to mid-stage PD were stratified by depression (Beck Depression Inventory≥14) and anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory≥8) status. Cognitive performance

Large-scale EEG network alterations in late-onset epilepsy of unknown etiology: A comparative study with Alzheimer's disease.

Late-onset epilepsy of unknown etiology (LOEU) is frequently accompanied by cognitive impairment and has been increasingly linked to Alzheimer's disease (AD), prompting questions about overlapping versus distinct pathophysiological mechanisms. While both conditions have been associated with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and large-scale functional network dysfunction, the shared and disorder-specific network substrates underlying cognitive decline remain incompletely characterized. In this prospective, two-center cohort study, we used biomarker-supported AD as a clinical reference point

Predicting Cognition and Affective Changes in Newly Diagnosed Parkinson's Disease Through Longitudinal Data-Driven Clustering.

Background: Although primarily characterised as a motor disorder, Parkinson's Disease (PD) also presents with non-motor symptoms, including cognitive decline and affective dysfunction, which are major predictors of quality of life and mortality for individuals. However, factors associated with these non-motor symptom trajectories remain under-characterised. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate predictors of cognitive and affective function over a 5-year follow-up period using data from the Progressive Parkinson's Marker Initiative. Results: Fuzzy C-means clustering analysis of year-5 cogni
