Exercise Training Prevents the Loss of Wall Thickness and Lowers Expression of Alzheimer's Related Proteins in 3xTg Mouse Jejunum.

Growing evidence has demonstrated the benefits of regular exercise on cardiovascular, neural, and cognitive function in humans with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the consequences of AD on gastrointestinal morphology and the effects of regular exercise, which plays an important role against the development of certain gastrointestinal-related diseases, are still poorly understood. Therefore, to assess the changes in intestinal structure in a mouse model of AD and the impact of exercise, 2-month-old 3xTg-AD male mice were subjected to treadmill running 5 days per week for a period of 5 month

Testing a tailored weight management program for veterans with PTSD: The MOVE! + UP randomized controlled trial.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), prevalent among Veterans, increases risk for having a high Body Mass Index. Although the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) offers an evidence-based behavioral weight management program called MOVE!, participants with PTSD lose less weight than those without mental health conditions, despite comparable participation. PTSD symptoms can interfere with one's ability to be physically active and maintain a healthy diet, the key targets in weight management programs. We developed and piloted a behavioral weight management program called MOVE! + UP that target

The effect of GABA-B receptors in the basolateral amygdala on passive avoidance memory impairment induced by MK-801 in rats.

MK-801 (dizocilpine) is a potent non-competitive N-methyl-[D]-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist that affects cognitive function, learning, and memory. As we know, NMDA receptors are significantly involved in memory function, as well as GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric acid) receptors. In this study, we aimed to discover the effect of GABA-B receptors in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) on MK-801-induced memory impairment. We used 160 male Wistar rats. The shuttle box was used to evaluate passive avoidance memory and locomotion apparatus was used to evaluate locomotor activity. MK-801 (0.125, 0.25, an

The Effect of Expertise on Kinesthetic Motor Imagery of Complex Actions.

The ability to mentally simulate an action by recalling the body sensations relative to the real execution is referred to as kinesthetic motor imagery (MI). Frontal and parietal motor-related brain regions are generally engaged during MI. The present study aimed to investigate the time course and neural correlates of complex action imagery and possible effects of expertise on the underlying action representation processes. Professional ballet dancers and controls were presented with effortful and effortless ballet steps and instructed to mentally reproduce each movement during EEG recording. T

Dissociable effects of tDCS polarity on latent decision processes are associated with individual differences in neurochemical concentrations and cortical morphology.

Applying a weak electrical current to the cortex has the potential to modulate neural functioning and behaviour. The most common stimulation technique, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), has been used for causal investigations of brain and cognitive functioning, and to treat psychiatric conditions such as depression. However, the efficacy of tDCS in modulating behaviour varies across individuals. Moreover, despite being associated with different neural effects, the two polarities of electrical stimulation - anodal and cathodal - can result in similar behavioural outcomes. Here we

Technology supported mindfulness for obsessive compulsive disorder: Self-reported mindfulness and EEG correlates of mind wandering.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) incorporating Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP) is the most efficacious treatment intervention for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD); however, there is a growing literature indicating that mindfulness based approaches can be beneficial in terms of managing OCD symptoms. The current study examined the potential benefits of using a consumer grade EEG-based biofeedback device (called "Muse") that permits individuals to engage in mindfulness meditation practices while at home. In this randomized controlled study, participants with a principal DSM-5 diagnosi

Adapted emotion skills training group for young people with anorexia nervosa : A mixed-methods evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Brief interventions focused on emotion processing are needed to support young people (YP) in inpatient treatment programmes to manage emotions. Cognitive Remediation and Emotion Skills Training (CREST) has been found beneficial in adult anorexia nervosa (AN) groups. An initial case series found that CREST is a feasible intervention for YP with AN. Further age-appropriate adaptations were needed to improve YP's engagement. Following qualitative feedback on the original CREST manual, a second case series was conducted in an inpatient unit with age-appropriate adaptations to evaluate

Adding the Coping Power Programme to parent management training: the cost-effectiveness of stacking interventions for children with disruptive behaviour disorders.

Parent management training (PMT) programmes and child cognitive behavioural therapy are recommended approaches for treatment of oppositional defiant disorder in children, and combining these may be effective. However, little is known regarding the economic efficiency of this additive effect. A within-trial cost-effectiveness analysis was carried out in Sweden including 120 children aged 8-12 who screened positive for disruptive behaviour disorders, within a psychiatric care setting, and their parents. They were randomly assigned to either the Swedish group-based PMT Comet, or to an enhanced ve

Individual and group format adjunct therapy on social emotional skills for adolescent inpatients with severe and complex eating disorders (CREST-A).

BACKGROUND: Relatively little is known about which psychological treatment adjuncts might be helpful for supporting people with the most severe and complex forms of anorexia nervosa (AN) with very low weight and malnutrition requiring inpatient admissions, but targeting key perpetuating factors such as social emotional difficulties may be one way to advance knowledge. This pilot feasibility project reports on the development of an adolescent adaptation of Cognitive Remediation and Emotion Skills Training (CREST-A) and explores its acceptability, feasibility and possible benefits. METHODS: An

Health-related quality of life and coping strategies among families with Down syndrome children in South India.

BACKGROUND: Down Syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosomal disorder associated with intellectual disability. Besides clinical management, additional support to cope with the demands of life is also necessary. These parents are frequently unstable and forego their Quality of Life (QoL), suffer additional economic difficulties, ill health and have lower well-being than families without disabilities. Hence, the study intends to evaluate the Health-Related QoL (HR-QoL) and coping strategies among families of DS children. METHODS: This explorative, cross-sectional study was conducted among pare

Operationalisation of a biopsychosocial approach for the non-pharmacological management of patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a major health concern. The biopsychosocial approach is an evidence-based approach recommended for managing chronic musculoskeletal pain. However, the evidence for this approach is largely reported from high-income countries; therefore, it is important to ascertain how biopsychosocial approaches are operationalised in low- and middle-income countries to inform practice. AIM: To examine the evidence for the operationalization of biopsychosocial interventions in managing patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain in low-and middle-income countries. M

Testing the specificity of interpretation biases in women with eating disorder symptoms: An online experimental assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive biases, such as memory, attention, and interpretation bias, are thought to play a central role in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the interpretation bias is ED-specific or can be generalized to comorbid disorder-related threats in women with high levels of ED symptoms. METHOD: In an online study, we measured interpretation bias using the modified Sentence Word Association Paradigm (SWAP), comparing women with (n = 39) and without (sub)threshold eating disorders (n = 56). We assessed endorse
