BACKGROUND: Unilateral loss of kidney function is followed by compensatory contralateral growth. The early, genome-wide transcriptional response of the untouched kidney to unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) or unilateral nephrectomy is unknown.
METHODS: Twelve adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to UUO and twelve rats to unilateral nephrectomy. At time points 12, 24, and 72 hours after insult four rats each were sacrificed and the contralateral kidney harvested for genome-wide gene expression analysis, transcription factor analysis, and histomorphology.

Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) is a stromal factor with multiple functions. Overexpression of TIMP-1 correlates with aggressive clinical behavior of a spectrum of tumors. Analysis of DNA copy number changes using comparative genomic hybridization in melanocytic neoplasms has revealed distinct patterns of chromosomal aberrations between benign melanocytic nevi and melanoma. Acitretin (Soriatane(R)) is an aromatic retinoïd (carboxylic acid metabolite of etretinate). Acitretin has a terminal elimination half-life of about 55 to 60 hours. After exposure to cytotoxic drugs at relatively low concentration, many cell types undergo G2-M arrest and then either mitotic cell death or, in the case of hematopoietic cells, apoptosis.
