A carpet factory worker, exposed to a number of different dyes, developed a severe hand dermatitis. The handling of warm, wet and freshly-dyed yarn with unprotected hands was thought to have caused the onset of dermatitis. Patch testing indicated that the patient was sensitive to only one of the dyes handled, namely Synacril Red 3B liquid, which is based on the single dyestuff Basic Red 22 (CI 11055). Chemical analysis revealed the dyestuff to be of high purity (greater than 95%), suggesting that sensitization was caused by the Basic Red 22 dyestuff itself and not by an avoidable impurity.

Recent reports suggest the high frequency of nickel induced allergic contact dermatitis and the absence in some patients of a clinical improvement following topical avoidance of sensitising allergen. In this study we evaluated the role of food ingested nickel in the maintenance and exacerbations of the disease. A high frequency of cutaneous exacerbations was obtained after oral challenge with a low nickel containing diet. The enantiomers of beta,gamma-dimethyl- and beta-methyl-alpha-methylene-gamma-butyrolactones have been synthesized stereospecifically from glutamic acid and beta-hydroxy isobutyric acid, respectively. Guinea pigs have been sensitized (Freund complete adjuvant technique) and tested to them. Both enantiomers of beta-methyl lactone as well as (+)-beta,gamma-dimethyl lactone induced enantiospecific allergic contact dermatitis (ACD); in turn, (-)-beta,gamma-dimethyl lactone showed no specificity. An interpretation is proposed.

Three patients with linear deposits of IgA along the epidermal basement membrane were studied. Fifty seven children with dermatitis herpetiformis, 18 from Finland and 39 from Hungary, were studied. Diagnostic criteria included the finding of granular IgA deposits in the skin of all patients. Cutaneous blood flow was determined before and immediately after rubbing the skin of 7 patients with atopic dermatitis and 6 normal subjects, using the local atraumatic 133Xe-method. The allegedly beneficial effect of biotin in the treatment of infantile 'flexural' seborrhoeic dermatitis was evaluated in a double-blind controlled study. No beneficial effect could be confirmed, and it is therefore unlikely that this disease is caused by biotin deficiency. Nor could this scaly dermatitis be ascribed to an essential fatty acid deficiency. Serum and adipose tissue fatty acids resembled each other and reflected the fatty acid composition of the diet.

An immunologic investigation was undertaken in a patient with atopic dermatitis and infectious mononucleosis complicated by eczema herpeticum. Humoral immunity was normal. The cell-mediated immune (CMI) response was temporarily depressed during the acute phase of the illness as measured by in vivo skin tests, and in vitro tests using T-lymphocyte population, macrophage inhibition factor, and lymphocyte transformation. It is postulated that the depression of CMI caused by infectious mononucleosis precipitated the development of eczema herpeticum in this patient.

Eleven patients with recurrent bacterial infections were found to have impaired neutrophil chemotaxis. The infections were primarily staphylococcal abscesses involving the skin and the respiratory tract. All patients had chronic eczematour dermatitis and an elevated level of serum IgE.
