Accurate localization of optic radiation during neurosurgery in an interventional MRI suite.

Accurate localization of the optic radiation is key to improving the surgical outcome for patients undergoing anterior temporal lobe resection for the treatment of refractory focal epilepsy. Current commercial interventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners are capable of performing anatomical and diffusion weighted imaging and are used for guidance during various neurosurgical procedures. We present an interventional imaging workflow that can accurately localize the optic radiation during surgery. The workflow is driven by a near real-time multichannel nonrigid image registration alg

Eye of the tiger-like MRI in parkinsonian variant of multiple system atrophy.

Parkinsonian variant of multiple system atrophy (MSA-P) clinically presents as autonomic dysfunction with parkinsonian features. Parkinsonian features include bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, postural instability and poor levo-dopa response. Neuropathologically, MSA-P is characterized by selective neuronal loss and gliosis mainly affecting the putamen and caudate nucleus, substantia nigra, olivopontocerebellar pathway and intermediolateral cell column of the spinal cord. Therefore, the target of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is focused on signal changes or volume reduction on putamen, includ

Vascular Disease Is Associated With Differences in Brain Structure and Lower Cognitive Functioning in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Vascular disease and cognitive impairment have been increasingly documented in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and both have been individually correlated with changes in brain structure. This study aimed to determine if both macro- and microstructural brain changes are prevalent in IBD and whether alterations in brain structure mediate the relationship between vascular disease and cognitive functioning. METHODS: Eighty-four IBD participants underwent multimodal magnetic resonance imaging. Volumetric and mean diffusivity measures of the thalamus, hippocampus, normal-appearing whi

Superficial siderosis as a rare cause of visual and auditory pseudohallucinations: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Superficial siderosis is a rare disease involving hemosiderin deposits on the surface of brain or spinal cord that are thought to cause clinical symptoms, which usually consist of cranial nerve dysfunction, cerebellar ataxia, or myelopathy. Pseudohallucinations have been described as the patient being aware of the nonreality of hallucination-like phenomena. Data on pseudohallucinations of cerebral somatic origin are sparse. We present a case of auditory and visual pseudohallucinations due to superficial siderosis. Siderosis was diagnosed using cerebrospinal fluid analysis and magne

Serial cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in wet beriberi.

A 69-year-old woman with previous pancreaticoduodenectomy was admitted for evaluation of chest discomfort on effort and leg edema for a few months. Oral flosemide before admission for 1 week failed to relieve her symptoms. Her blood pressure was 105/51 mmHg and heart rate was 76 beats/min. Chest X-ray revealed an enlarged heart and mild pulmonary congestion. Echocardiography demonstrated normal left ventricular ejection fraction and diastolic dysfunction with no left ventricular hypertrophy. Cardiac catheterization showed normal coronary arteries, high cardiac index, and elevated intracardial

Presumed hepatic pseudolipoma detected as a small hepatic surface lesion: multimodality imaging findings.

Hepatic pseudolipomas are uncommon benign lesions located on or near the liver capsule which are thought to arise from a detached epiploic appendage that becomes trapped near Glisson's capsule. Because these lesions may appear as small hepatic or perihepatic nodules, they can mimic primary or metastatic hepatic tumors on screening imaging. Here, we report the case of a 55-year-old asymptomatic man with no relevant medical history who was referred after routine health-screening ultrasonography revealed a 10 × 8-mm hyperechoic lesion adjacent to the surface of liver segment VI. Liver function te

Sensorineural Hearing Loss After Transvenous Embolization of a Transverse-Sigmoid Sinus Dural Arteriovenous Fistula.

We report a case of sensorineural hearing loss following transvenous embolization (TVE) of a transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistula (TS-DAVF) with cortical venous reflux from an isolated sinus. A 64-year-old woman was transferred to our hospital on an emergency basis due to slurred speech and suspected stroke. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed TS-DAVF with cortical venous reflux on the left side. We diagnosed her with TS-DAVF and Cognard type IIa+b, and performed TVE via an occluded sigmoid sinus. Posttreatment angiography confirmed the absence of an arteriovenous shunt.

A Review of the Role of Neuroimaging in Neurotoxicity Monitoring in Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Neurotoxicity is one of the complications of treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with chemotherapeutic agents. Detecting any adverse changes early and effectively is important, as neurotoxicity may be reversible at certain stages. Imaging studies, such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), can be helpful in visualizing neurotoxicity. Neurotoxicity usually occurs during the first 2 months of treatment, roughly the induction phase, and includes leukoencephalopathy, encephalopathy, and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome. Changes mainly take the for

VARS2 gene mutation leading to overall developmental delay in a child with epilepsy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The mitochondrial respiratory chain defects have become the most common cause of neurometabolic disorders in children and adults, which can occur at any time in life, often associated with neurological dysfunction, and lead to chronic disability and premature death. Approximately one-third of patients with mitochondrial disease have biochemical defects involving multiple respiratory chain complexes, suggesting defects in protein synthesis within the mitochondria. We here report a child with VARS2 gene mutations causing mitochondrial disease. CASE SUMMARY: A girl, aged 3 years and
