BACKGROUND: Chronic hemodialysis patients are at higher risk for acquiring hepatitis C virus (HCV). The prevalence varies among different countries and hemodialysis centers. Glycine is an important precursor of cyanogen chloride (CNCl)--a disinfection byproduct (DBP) found in chlorinated drinking water. Aseptic meningitis caused by Echovirus-30 was the main diagnosis of a large outbreak in Belarus in Summer-Autumn, 1997, involving 460 patients.
