Timentin (ticarcillin plus clavulanic acid) plus amikacin was administered as an empirical regimen to 52 febrile granulocytopenic patients with cancer and appeared as effective as the other commonly recommended combinations of antimicrobial agents. The effect of terrilytin on the bacteriostatic activity of the tissues (BAT) under conditions of antibacterial therapy was studied on experimental models of tuberculosis of the kidneys and female genitalia in 46 rabbits. Antimicrobial agents are commonly used therapeutically and prophylactically for travelers' diarrhea. Resistance of enteric pathogens to these agents may prevent the success of such therapy, with the result depending upon the level of resistance and the drug concentrations achieved in the gastrointestinal tract. Data from a number of geographic locations were collected in order to determine whether consistent trends exist and whether predictions can be made regarding the susceptibility of various enteric pathogens worldwide. These data showed marked variability in the prevalence of resistance.

When one endeavours to obtain lasting remissions in long-standing or erosive and/or highly seropositive, i.e. unrelenting, RA, combined 'aggressive' two-drug therapy appears to be reasonably well tolerated. Surprisingly, gold and D-penicillamine are not antagonistic but appear to potentiate each other to give the best results. In analogy with lymphoma and with the open trial by McCarty--and in the absence of new major 'disease-modifying' drugs--the door should be kept wide open towards controlled trials of combined three-drug chemotherapy.
