Ultrastructure of the articular cartilage of the mandibular condyle: aging and degeneration.

To obtain more insight into the pathogenesis of osteoarthrosis of the temporomandibular joint, we examined the ultrastructure of articular cartilage of six healthy and sixteen osteoarthrotic human mandibular condyles. Ultrastructural changes due to aging and osteoarthrosis are described and compared with the findings of other ultrastructural studies of articular cartilage of synovial joints. Aging was accompanied by some slight degenerative signs. Osteoarthrotic hyaline cartilage and fibrocartilage showed a striking similarity. The only ultrastructural difference was the presence of elastic fi

[A case of lipoma of the spermatic cord].

A case of lipoma of the spermatic cord is presented. The patient is a 68-year-old with the chief complaint of indolent swelling of the left scrotal content which had been noticed about a month ago. A firm elastic and walnut-sized mass with positive transillumination was palpable in the left spermatic cord, but ultrasound sonography demonstrated that it was a solid mass. Though the tumor was punctured with a 18-gauge needle, nothing could be aspirated. The tumor was removed and histologically diagnosed as lipoma originating in the left spermatic cord. Including the present case, 38 Japanese cas

On temperature factor and the effect of viscosity on blood temperature in the arteries.

A mathematical theory which could be used to explain a clinical observation in some sickle-cell anemia patients is proposed. It is shown that if the energy stored in the elastic walls of the artery of such a patient is accompanied by thermal effects, then the existence of a local hot spot on the body of a sickle-cell anemia patient could be due to shock formation even when the viscosity of the blood is zero. On the other hand, if the energy stored is not accompanied by thermal effects, then a jump in the temperature can only occur if the viscosity is not zero. We give the location of such a ju

The aging face. Why changes occur, how to correct them.

Most changes that occur in the aging face are related to gravity working on skin that is becoming progressively thinner, drier, and less elastic. Exposure to sunlight hastens these changes, and protection from the sun is the only proved way to delay them. Dermabrasion, chemabrasion, and collagen implant (Zyderm) injection are safe and effective nonsurgical procedures that can improve the appearance of the aging face. Plastic surgical procedures to remove excess skin at the upper eyelids, raise the eyebrows, tighten the lower lids, and elevate the nasal tip can provide functional as well as cos

Multiple aortic aneurysms in relapsing polychondritis.

A patient with relapsing polychondritis and thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms is described. The aortic changes were due to aortitis, which primarily involved the media, with increased vascularization, perviascular infiltration of mononuclear cells, increased amounts of collagen and decreased amounts of elastic tissue and sulfated acid mucopolysaccharides. Aortic aneurysms frequently occur in relapsing polychondritis; they are usually in the ascending aorta but may be multiple and involve the abdominal aorta; involvement of the ascending aorta results in aortic regurgitation and left vent

Cutaneous extensibility in health and disease.

The results are recorded of a number of studies performed over the last few years using a simple and reproducible method for investigating the extensibility of intact skin. A major advantage of this method lies in the fact that it causes the patient no discomfort and leaves his skin without blemish. We have found abnormal behaviour of skin in response to applied stress in the heritable connective tissue disorders: Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, cutis laxa, and pseudoxanthoma elasticum, and in the acquired disorders of acromegaly, hypopituitarism and scleroderma. An abnormal elastic modulus, however,

The stiffness of the flagella of impaled bull sperm.

The elastic rigidity (stiffness) of impaled motionless bull sperm flagella has been determined by a manipulatory technique which permitted direct analytical treatment of the experimental system. The effects of external ATP and ADP were measured. It was found that ATP acts as a plasticizing agent, while ADP does not. The stiffness measured for flagella in a medium without ATP was 15 times greater than the value measured with 10 mM ATP present. The rigor-like stiffness measured with no ATP present is reversible with ATP and seems to be correlated to a transition in the state of the contractile s

Feasibility of a machine learning model for predicting weight gain after kidney transplantation machine learning and weight gain after kidney transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Excessive weight gain after kidney transplantation adversely affects patient and graft outcomes. Machine Learning has been increasingly used to improve risk prediction across a range of transplant-related outcomes, yet its application to post-transplant weight trajectories remains unexplored. This study is the first to evaluate the feasibility of using Machine Learning algorithms to identify predictors of weight gain after kidney transplantation. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed 374 adult kidney transplant recipients. We developed an Elastic Net regression model w

Dual-mode microfluidic RELS-QCM platform for label-free profiling of mitochondrial preparations from a graded stress model.

Rapid comparison of fragile isolated organelles requires consistent sample handling and concentration normalization. We present a polycarbonate microfluidic platform that sequentially combines resonance elastic light scattering (RELS) and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensing of the same unstained mitochondrial suspension. Mitochondria were isolated from neuron-like SH-SY5Y cultures exposed to 100-500 μM 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+) for 24 h and adjusted to defined protein concentrations. The upstream optical module records the 532-nm elastic scattering line at 90°, whereas a downstr

Multimodal Behavioral Data Predict Stroke Patient's Response to BCI Treatment Through Explainable AI.

Brain-computer interface (BCI)-based neurorehabilitation holds promise in enhancing motor recovery after stroke. However, recent research has reported heterogeneous results, indicating both responders and non-responders to BCI therapy. Using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methods, this study aims to investigate the independent and combined importance of multimodal behavioral data to predict patients' response to BCI therapy. Forty-two subacute stroke patients with lower-limb motor impairment underwent behavioral assessments, and received two-week BCI rehabilitation training. Linear

Pressure-driven densification and connectivity in a CuZr metallic glass.

CONTEXT: Metallic glasses (MGs) exhibit exceptional strength, elasticity, and corrosion resistance due to their disordered atomic structure, with Cu-Zr alloys serving as widely studied model systems. External pressure can significantly modify glass formation, atomic packing, and mechanical response by altering short-range order (SRO), medium-range order (MRO), and the glass transition temperature. While previous studies have reported pressure-induced crystallization or reductions in icosahedral ordering at high pressures, the present work shows that moderate external pressures (<10 GPa) enhanc

Cardiac Performance Evaluation in Patients with Muscular Dystrophy.

Ventriculoarterial coupling (VAC), the ratio of arterial elastance (Ea) to LV end-systolic elastance (Ees), measures the relationship between ventricular performance and arterial stiffness. We hypothesized that VAC is abnormal in muscular dystrophy (MD) patients and worsens with disease progression. MD patients < 21 years were included. Demographics, MD phenotype, medications, medical history, and clinical status were collected. Initial and last follow up echocardiograms were reviewed to determine Ea, Ees, and VAC and compared between MD and age-matched males and between the initial and last f

Machine Learning Prediction of Discharge Destination in Patients with Parkinson's Disease; A Nationwide Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Non-home discharge after hospitalization is common among patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and is associated with adverse outcomes. Early identification of patients likely to require post-acute facility care may improve discharge planning. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using a nationwide healthcare database, including adults aged ≥50 years hospitalized with PD between November 2017 and June 2023. The first hospitalization of each patient was defined as the index admission. Discharge destination was categorized as home, facility, or in-hospital death. Data

Running Economy Benefits of Shoes Incorporating Advanced Footwear Technology Decrease With Increasing Incline and Are Negligible Above Moderate Gradients.

Shoes incorporating advanced footwear technology (AFT) improve running economy (RE) during level running by ~3%-4% compared to traditional shoes, but the extent to which benefits are preserved on inclines is unclear. Here we investigated the impact of AFT shoes on the energetics of incline running and examined how much benefits are reduced relative to level running. Twelve competitive male runners ran on a treadmill at four gradients (level, 3%, 6%, and 9%) in the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next% shoe (VF, AFT) and the Nike ZoomX Streakfly shoe (SF, control) in randomized order. Thermochemical valorisation of sheep manure into bio-oil for asphalt binder modification.

Sheep manure is an abundant biogenic residue with potential as a renewable feedstock for producing value-added materials through thermochemical conversion. This study investigates the valorisation of sheep manure by slow pyrolysis to obtain a bio-oil suitable for use as a bio-based modifier in bituminous binders. Physicochemical characterisation showed that the recovered BO had a pH of 4.8, 2.20 wt% water, and 30.33 wt% oxygen, with ketones dominating the GC-MS profile. The sheep-manure-derived bio-oil was incorporated into a conventional B50/70 bitumen at 3, 6, and 9 wt%, and its performance

Research on dynamic stiffness match form of indirect fastener based on rail high-frequency wear characteristics.

The stiffness combination of the dual-layer pads in indirect fastener systems significantly influences high-frequency wheel-rail wear behavior. However, the actual stiffness exhibits strong nonlinearity and non-uniformity due to the deformation of the steel plate and the frequency-dependent stiffness of the elastic pads, making it challenging to clarify the underlying mechanisms. To address this, this study develops a dynamic model for indirect fasteners by modeling the ironbase using an Euler beam and representing the frequency/load-dependent stiffness of the elastic pads using a Multi-Point

Impact of fluid expansion on ventriculo-arterial coupling during circulatory failure.

BACKGROUND: While the effects of fluid expansion (FE) on preload are well established, its impact on cardiac afterload and ventriculo-arterial coupling (VAC) remains less defined. This study aimed to assess the effects of FE on VAC and its components-arterial elastance (Ea) and left ventricular end-systolic elastance (Ees)-and to evaluate the influence of preload responsiveness. METHODS: In this prospective observational study conducted in a French ICU, patients with acute circulatory failure requiring FE (500 mL crystalloid bolus) were included. Transthoracic echocardiography was performed b

A pilot study of the effect of norepinephrine dose on left ventricular-arterial coupling in patients with septic shock.

Left ventricular-arterial (V-A) coupling is a key determinant of cardiovascular performance, which integrates intrinsic myocardial contractility with ventricular afterload. Septic shock frequently disrupts this coupling, and norepinephrine (NE) may worsen it in some scenarios. In this study, we aimed to quantify the dose-response relationship between NE and V-A coupling and to test for interactions between NE and elapsed treatment time or cumulative infusion volume (IV) in patients with septic shock. In this single-center prospective cohort study, NE dose, hemodynamic indicators, IV, and pulse
