The roles of early-life adversity and rumination in neural response to emotional faces amongst anxious and depressed adults.

BACKGROUND: Early-life adversity (ELA) is a risk factor for internalizing psychopathology (IP). ELA is also linked to alterations in neural phenotypes of emotion processing and maladaptive emotion regulatory strategies, such as ruminative brooding, in adulthood. We therefore expected that ELA would predict cortical brain activation to emotional faces in transdiagnostic IP and in turn, mediate the extent of rumination amongst patients with IPs and ELA (IP + ELA). METHOD: One hundred and thirty-two individuals, including 102 treatment-seeking adults with heterogeneous IPs and 30 healthy control

Chronobiological dis-rhythmicity is related to emotion dysregulation and suicidality in depressive bipolar II disorder with mixed features.

In Bipolar Disorder, chronobiological rhythm alterations play a key role by negatively influencing its entire trajectory. Our aim was to assess their potential association with emotion dysregulation and suicidality in subjects with Bipolar Disorder. Eighty-five patients with Bipolar Disorder - II depressive episode with mixed features were recruited and 35 as healthy controls. Subjects were evaluated with SCID-DSM-5, the Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN), the DERS: Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Young

The Development of the Working Alliance and Its Ability to Predict Outcome in Emotion-Focused Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder.

The study focuses on the alliance of 12 patients receiving emotion-focused therapy for social anxiety. Anxiety symptoms and patient perception of the working alliance were examined weekly. The first eight sessions of each patient were coded for within- and between-sessions alliance levels (1008 segments were coded). At the sample level, the alliance shows linear development over time but high variability between individuals. More than half the patients showed alliance development consistent with the rupture-resolution pattern. Without accounting for the temporal relationship between alliance a

Can childhood trauma influence facial emotion recognition independently from a diagnosis of severe mental disorder?

INTRODUCTION: Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a fundamental component in social interaction. We know that FER is disturbed in patients with severe mental disorder (SMD), as well as those with a history of childhood trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We intend to analyze the possible relationship between the existence of trauma in childhood irrespective of a SMD, measured by the CTQ scale and facial expression recognition, in a sample of three types of subjects (n=321): healthy controls (n=179), patients with BPD (n=69) and patients with a first psychotic episode (n=73). Likewise, clinical and

Early life stress, resilience and emotional dysregulation in major depressive disorder with comorbid borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) show different course and treatment compared to major depressive disorder (MDD). Early life stress may increase BPD onset; however, resilience may play a protective role against the development of psychopathology. The goal of this study was to compare the early life stress, resilience, and the clinical characteristics of emotional dysregulation in patients with MDD with and without comorbid BPD. METHODS: Thirty patients with both BPD and MDD, 25 patients with MDD alone, and 25 age- and sex- matched healthy controls, participated in this study.

Sexual Abuse Exposure Alters Early Processing of Emotional Words: Evidence from Event-Related Potentials.

This study aimed to compare the time course of emotional information processing between trauma-exposed and control participants, using electrophysiological measures. We conceived an emotional Stroop task with two types of words: trauma-related emotional words and neutral words. We assessed the evoked cerebral responses of sexual abuse victims without post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and no abuse participants. We focused particularly on an early wave (C1/P1), the N2pc, and the P3b. Our main result indicated an early effect (55-165 ms) of emotionality, which varied between non-exposed parti

Young Adult Retrospective Reports of Adverse Childhood Experiences: Prevalence of Physical, Emotional, and Sexual Abuse in Italy.

This study sought to understand the prevalence of childhood abuse in Italy using an instrument developed by the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) and adapted to the Italian context. The study participants were 312 young adults, 106 males (34%), and 206 females (64%), aged 18-24 years, from various northwest Italian universities and workplaces, using an ISPCAN Child Abuse Screening Tool retrospective questionnaire (ICAST-R). With reference to comparative data from other countries, the Italian context reveals a high incidence of emotional abuse (62%) fo

Do emotion regulation difficulties explain the association between executive functions and child physical abuse risk?

This study examined the associations between executive functioning problems, emotion regulation difficulties, and risk for perpetrating child physical abuse (CPA). It was hypothesized that: (a) poor executive functions (i.e., working memory problems and inhibition/switching problems) would be associated with higher levels of emotion regulation difficulties and CPA risk; (b) emotion regulation difficulties would be positively associated with CPA risk; and (c) emotion regulation difficulties would partially explain the association between executive functions (i.e., working memory problems and in

The role of emotional intelligence and negative affect as protective and risk factors of aggressive behavior: A moderated mediation model.

The General Aggression Model (GAM) offers an integrative explanation of the aggressive behavior based on three stages: 1) inputs: personal and situational factors; 2) routes or individual internal states: affect, cognition, and arousal; and 3) outcomes: decision processes with a (non) aggressive result. Researchers are interested in looking for protective factors within the GAM to diminish aggression. Previous studies have found two relevant variables acting independently as risk and protective factors: emotional intelligence (EI) and negative affect (NA). The aim of the present study is to an

Risk factors and health consequences of physical and emotional violence against children in Zimbabwe: a nationally representative survey.

INTRODUCTION: This study provides, for the first time, comparable national population-based estimates that describe the nature and magnitude of physical and emotional violence during childhood in Zimbabwe. METHODS: From August to September 2011, we conducted a national population-based survey of 2410 respondents aged 13-24 years, using a two-stage cluster sampling. Regression models were adjusted for relevant demographics to estimate the ORs for associations between violence, risk factors and various health-related outcomes. RESULTS: Respondents aged 18-24 years report a lifetime prevalence

The emotion dysregulation inventory: Psychometric properties and item response theory calibration in an autism spectrum disorder sample.

UNLABELLED: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often present with prominent emotion dysregulation that requires treatment but can be difficult to measure. The Emotion Dysregulation Inventory (EDI) was created using methods developed by the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS® ) to capture observable indicators of poor emotion regulation. Caregivers of 1,755 youth with ASD completed 66 candidate EDI items, and the final 30 items were selected based on classical test theory and item response theory (IRT) analyses. The analyses identified two factors: (a)

Neuroinflammation and aberrant hippocampal plasticity in a mouse model of emotional stress evoked by exposure to ultrasound of alternating frequencies.

Emotional stress is a form of stress evoked by processing negative mental experience rather than an organic or physical disturbance and is a frequent cause of neuropsychiatric pathologies, including depression. Susceptibility to emotional stress is commonly regarded as a human-specific trait that is challenging to model in other species. Recently, we showed that a 3-week-long exposure to ultrasound of unpredictable alternating frequencies within the ranges of 20-25 kHz and 25-45 kHz can induce depression-like characteristics in laboratory mice and rats. In an anti-depressant sensitive manner,

Emotion perception improvement following high frequency transcranial random noise stimulation of the inferior frontal cortex.

Facial emotion perception plays a key role in interpersonal communication and is a precursor for a variety of socio-cognitive abilities. One brain region thought to support emotion perception is the inferior frontal cortex (IFC). The current study aimed to examine whether modulating neural activity in the IFC using high frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) could enhance emotion perception abilities. In Experiment 1, participants received either tRNS to IFC or sham stimulation prior to completing facial emotion and identity perception tasks. Those receiving tRNS significantly

College Binge Drinking Associated with Decreased Frontal Activation to Negative Emotional Distractors during Inhibitory Control.

The transition to college is associated with an increase in heavy episodic alcohol use, or binge drinking, during a time when the prefrontal cortex and prefrontal-limbic circuitry continue to mature. Traits associated with this immaturity, including impulsivity in emotional contexts, may contribute to risky and heavy episodic alcohol consumption. The current study used blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) multiband functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess brain activation during a task that required participants to ignore background images with positive, negative, or neutral emoti

Exploring the East-West Divide in Prevalence of Affective Disorder: A Case for Cultural Differences in Coping With Negative Emotion.

Lifetime rates of clinical depression and anxiety in the West tend to be approximately 4 to 10 times greater than rates in Asia. In this review, we explore one possible reason for this cross-cultural difference, that Asian cultures think differently about emotion than do Western cultures and that these different systems of thought help explain why negative affect does not escalate into clinical disorder at the same rate. We review research from multiple disciplines-including cross-cultural psychology, social cognition, clinical psychology, and psychiatry-to make the case that the Eastern holis
