[Triple negative breast cancer: a difficult disease to diagnose and treat].

Triple negative breast cancer (CMTN, Spanish acronym) is a malignant neoplasm characterized by the absence of expression of estrogen, progesterone and HER2 receptors. Recent studies have shown that CMTN is a heterogeneous group including different neoplasm with different prognosis. However, because genetic profiles are not a standard practice in conventional diagnosis of breast cancer, it is hard to properly identify this breast cancer subtype. CMTN is characterized by its high-incidence epidemiological patterns in African-American and Latin people, and lower incidence in Caucasian people, and

Endomyocardial fibrosis: A form of endemic restrictive cardiomyopathy.

Endomyocardial fibrosis is a form of endemic restrictive cardiomyopathy that affects mainly children and adolescents, and is geographically restricted to some poor areas of Africa, Latin America and Asia. It is a condition with high morbidity and mortality, for which no effective therapy is available. Although several hypotheses have been proposed as triggers or causal factors for the disease, none are able to explain the occurrence of the disease worldwide. In endemic areas of Africa endomyocardial fibrosis is as common a cause of heart failure as rheumatic heart disease, accounting for up to

Maternal infection and schizophrenia: implications for prevention.

Accumulating evidence suggests that maternal infection is a risk factor for schizophrenia. Prospective epidemiological studies indicate that maternal influenza, toxoplasmosis, and genital/reproductive infection are associated with this disorder in offspring. Preclinical models of maternal immune activation have supported the neurobiological plausibility of these microbes in schizophrenia. Previous studies suggest that treatment or prophylactic efforts targeting these and other infections could have significant effects on reducing the incidence of schizophrenia, given that they are common in th

You are what you eat: of fish, fat and folate in late-life psychiatric disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There has been increasing research into the role of nutritional factors in mood and cognitive disorders in later life. This review evaluates findings from recent research for the role and effect of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and B vitamins in mood and cognitive disorders in later life. RECENT FINDINGS: Epidemiological studies, including genetic epidemiological ones, continue to provide support for the role of folate and/or vitamin B12 in mood disorders in later life. However, evidence from recent randomized controlled trials for the effect of these B vitamins a

DNA microarray for molecular epidemiology of Salmonella.

Salmonellosis is a common infection estimated to affect 3 billion people and to cause 200,000 deaths every year. Infections can appear as enteric fever, gastroenteritis, bacteremia, or extraintestinal focal infection. The course of the disease depends on a variety of factors, including infective dose, immune status of the host, and the genetic background of both the host and the pathogen. It has been recognized that certain Salmonella types play a major role in the epidemiology of Salmonella. Here we describe a DNA microarray comprised of 282 sixty-mer oligonucleotide probes to study the epide

Onychomycosis in Ceará (Northeast Brazil): epidemiological and laboratory aspects.

Knowledge of epidemiological and mycological characteristics of onychomycosis has been noted by many authors as being an important tool for control of these fungal infections. This study seeks to improve knowledge of onychomycosis epidemiology and mycological features. Samples were taken from infected fingernails and toenails of 976 patients undergoing treatment at a respected Dermatology Center in Ceará, Fortaleza, CE, Brazil. Specimens from 512 patients (52%) were positive for onychomycosis. From the culture-positive samples, yeasts of the genus Candida (C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. krusei

Review article: oesophago-gastric adenocarcinoma -- an epidemiological perspective.

This article reviews the epidemiology of cancers arising in the distal oesophagus and proximal stomach, sometimes collectively termed oesophago-gastric junctional adenocarcinomas. The several complexities involved in defining this group of cancers are considered and the reported increasing trends in incidence are reviewed, together with the descriptive epidemiology. The rates of these cancers are increasing, but not as dramatically as sometimes reported. They are also more common in white males than in other ethnic groups or in females. Although several aetiological risk factors have been repo

Bacteriological, clinical and epidemiological characteristics of hospital-acquired Acinetobacter baumannii infection in a teaching hospital.

Over an 18 month period, the bacteriological, clinical and epidemiological characteristics of nosocomial Acinetobacter baumannii infections in a teaching hospital were studied. Typing studies were performed on 38 strains isolated from 36 patients. Twenty-two of the strains were isolated during the three outbreaks. Surgery, catheterization, mechanical ventilation, and antibiotic therapy for adult patients and respiratory distress syndrome, mechanical ventilation, and prematurity for paediatric patients were the main risk factors identified. All isolates were resistant to penicillins (except amp

Epidemiology of variant CJD.

There are 100 confirmed cases of variant CJD (vCJD) in the U.K., with four cases in other countries (France and the Republic of Ireland). In the U.K., The mean age of onset is 28 years (range 12-74) with a median duration of 13 months (range 6-39). There are reported regional variations in incidence in the U.K., with a North/South difference and a 'cluster' of cases in one county, Leicestershire. The incidence of cases in the U.K. is rising. There are concerns about the possibility of secondary, iatrogenic, spread of vCJD, especially given the finding of positive PrP immunocytochemistry in lym

Cryptosporidium oocysts in a water supply associated with a cryptosporidiosis outbreak.

An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis occurred in and around Clitheroe, Lancashire, in northwest England, during March 2000. Fifty-eight cases of diarrhea with Cryptosporidium identified in stool specimens were reported. Cryptosporidium oocysts were identified in samples from the water treatment works as well as domestic taps. Descriptive epidemiology suggested that drinking unboiled tap water in a single water zone was the common factor linking cases. Environmental investigation suggested that contamination with animal feces was the likely source of the outbreak. This outbreak was unusual in that

A whirlpool associated outbreak of Pontiac fever at a hotel in Northern Sweden.

In April 1999, an outbreak of Pontiac fever occurred at a hotel in Northern Sweden. A retrospective cohort study to find the source and define the extent of the outbreak was carried out among 530 Swedish and Norwegian guests. Twenty-nine epidemiological cases (8% of 378 responders) aged 21-57 years were identified. Antibodies against Legionella micdadei were detected in 17 of 27 tested cases and 3 other symptomatic persons. Visiting the whirlpool area was identified as the sole risk factor (RR 86; 95% CI 21-352) and infected cases were confined to visitors to this area over three successive da

[Elements of epidemiology and initiation of carcinogenesis in carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract. Future therapeutic consequence?].

The study of epidemiology and of the carcinogenesis in epidermoid carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract shows that their occurrence is not random. Tobacco abuse plays a major role, especially because of benzopyrene, mutagen of the P53 gene, however it is associated with many other potentiating factors: alcohol, metals, hydrocarbures, virus, food, climate, genetic fragility that create genetic lesions at the origin of carcinogenesis. The latter occurs as "field cancerization" with multiple alterations of the mucosa and general attack of the control systems of the differentiation, growth a

Natural history and preventative treatment of recurrent mood disorders.

This chapter focuses on recent developments in our understanding of the etiology, epidemiology, and treatment of recurrent mood disorders. It addresses the changing relationship between endogenous and exogenous factors over time in the etiology of mood episodes. In the area of epidemiology, the chapter presents new information on the prevalence of various subtypes and male/female differences in lifetime risk. Complications of the mood disorders, such as suicide, and important comorbidities, including alcoholism and substance abuse, are discussed. In the area of treatment, the life-long nature

Epidemiological survey of definite cases of Meniere's disease collected by the seventeen members of the Meniere's Disease Research Committee of Japan in 1975--1976.

Between Aril 1975 and December 1976, the second nationwide survey of Meniere's disease in Japan was made by the 17 members of the Meniere's Disease Research Committee of Japan. The epidemiological data from 520 patients with definite Meniere's disease were analyzed in comparison with those from the 126 patients in the non-Meniere vertiginous group (Control A) and the 228 patients in the rhinolaryngological group (Control B). The male:female ratio of definite cases of Meniere's disease was almost the same, and the age distribution peaked at the age group of 40--49 years for males, while the pea

Molecular epidemiology of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Gulf Cooperation Council countries (2010-2025): a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a global public health concern, including within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). As an opportunistic pathogen, MRSA poses a threat to hospitalized patients, and to the wider community. Its success is largely attributed to its diverse virulence factors and adaptability, with antimicrobial resistance further enhancing its persistence and complicating treatment efforts. In the GCC, the epidemiology of MRSA is influenced by several distinctive factors, including the region's diverse demographics, high population mobility, and va

Increasing Burden of Lower-Extremity Fractures in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA): A 30-Year Epidemiological Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lower-extremity fractures (LEFs) account for >30% of all skeletal injuries, contributing to the global health and economic burden. Fracture epidemiology in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has been studied little. Health factors and disease epidemiology differ greatly among populations in MENA despite cultural, political, and economic similarities among the region's countries. This study examined the epidemiology of LEFs and the need for rehabilitation in MENA from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: We examined the epidemiology of fractures of the pelvis, hip, femur, patella, ti

Global epidemiology of psoriatic arthritis.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory musculoskeletal disease that develops in a substantial proportion of patients with psoriasis (PsO). Understanding its epidemiology is essential for improving early recognition, risk stratification, and preventive strategies. This review summarizes current evidence on the global prevalence and incidence of PsA in both the general population and among individuals with PsO. Population-based studies estimate PsA prevalence at approximately 0.1-0.2%, with considerable geographic variability. Among patients with PsO, approximately 20% develop PsA,

Derivation of three occupational status measures in young Black women: the study of environment, lifestyle, and fibroids.

Socioeconomic Status (SES), a complex, multidimensional construct, is commonly assessed using education or combinations of education, income, and/or occupation. Though epidemiological studies tend to collect occupational data, focus on occupation-based SES measures has been limited. We describe a method to process and derive occupational status measures and then compare them for application in epidemiological research. Using US Census Bureau's Industry and Occupational Codes to standardize self-reported baseline occupational and industry data for 1053 Black/African American participants in the
