Impact of the Ratio of Visceral to Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue in Donor Nephrectomy Patients.

OBJECTIVE: It was reported that a metabolic syndrome affected the remaining renal function after living donor nephrectomy. However, the measurement of waist circumference is unclear because it cannot distinguish between visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT). We investigate the clinical correlation between body adipose tissue and renal function recovery after living donor nephrectomy. METHODS: From July 2013 to February 2015, 75 living kidney donors were enrolled. The VAT and SAT were measured by preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan. Body mass index (BMI), V

Body composition in sexual precocity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review, we have summarized the current data on the effect of sexual precocity and treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues (GnRHa) on body composition. RECENT FINDINGS: Higher body weight and weight gain in infancy and childhood may increase the risk of early puberty in girls. The relation between BMI and pubertal onset in boys is controversial. Current studies draw attention to the fact that a similar relationship may exist in boys too. Obesity prevalence is high among girls with central precocious puberty (CPP) and treatment with GnRHa has a differe

Chronic subcutaneous infusion of neurosecretory protein GM increases body mass gain in chicks.

Recently we discovered a small hypothalamic protein in the chicken, named neurosecretory protein GL (NPGL), which is associated with body growth and energy metabolism in birds and rodents. Genome database analysis suggested that the NPGL gene has a paralogous gene in vertebrates, named neurosecretory protein GM (NPGM). However, the biological action of NPGM remains unclear. In this study, we investigated whether NPGM affects body growth in chicks. We found that subcutaneous infusion of NPGM for six days increased body mass gain in a dose-dependent manner. Despite the observed increase in body

Body height and immune efficacy: testing body stature as a signal of biological quality.

According to the good genes hypothesis and energy allocation theory, human adult body height may reflect biological quality. An important aspect of this quality is immune system functioning (ISF). The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between ISF and body height in healthy people. The ISF was determined by several important innate (total complement and lysozyme activity, neutrophil function) and adaptive immune parameters (lymphocytes, IgA and IgG, and response to the flu vaccine). Overall, 96 males and 97 females were subjected to flu vaccination, and of these, 35 males and 3

Nutritional effects and support in the patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Studies of body composition in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients demonstrated body cell mass depletion out of proportion to losses of body weight or fat. The timing of death from wasting was related to the extent rather than the specific cause. However, some patients remain stable for indefinite periods, indicating that wasting is not a constant phenomenon. The development of malnutrition is multifactorial and includes disorders of food intake, nutrient absorption and intermediary metabolism. Nutritional repletion has been demonstrated in several studies. The effect of treatin

The association between back muscle characteristics and pressure pain sensitivity in low back pain patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Some low back pain (LBP) patients recover after every pain episode whereas others develop chronicity. Research indicates that the amount of atrophy and fat infiltration differs between patients with LBP. Also enhanced pain sensitivity is present only in a subgroup of LBP patients. The relationship between pain sensitivity and muscular deformations in LBP, is however unexplored. This study examined the association between pressure pain sensitivity and the structural characteristics of the lumbar muscles in three different groups of non-specific LBP patients. METHODS: This

Independent and synergistic effects of maternal and paternal obesogenic diets on offspring early-life outcomes in the rat.

Independent effects of maternal obesogenic diets on offspring outcomes are acknowledged, but data on paternal and combined maternal-paternal obesity remain limited. We investigated independent and combined maternal-paternal effects of an obesogenic (OB) high-fat, high-sugar diet on offspring outcomes. Male (pat) and female (mat) rats were fed a control diet (CON) or OB diet for 5 weeks pre-mating. Four groups were established: matCON-patCON, matCON-patOB, matOB-patCON and matOB-patOB. Offspring outcomes included birth weight and naso-anal length, survival rates to weaning, weaning weight, retr

Ketogenic Diet Prevents Obesity-Associated Pancreatic Cancer Independent of Weight Loss and Induces Pancreatic Metabolic Reprogramming.

UNLABELLED: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive cancer with poor outcomes. Obesity increases the risk of PDAC through metabolic dysregulation and inflammation. Ketogenic diet (KD) can alter metabolism and has been evaluated for its effects on tumor progression in nonobese PDAC using genetically engineered mouse models (GEMM). We hypothesized that KD may also prevent obesity-associated PDAC progression by altering body composition and cancer metabolism. Therefore, male PDAC GEMMs were subjected to diet-induced obesity (DIO) using high-fat diets or maintained on a low-fat di
